During a June 2017 visit to Homeboy Industries in Los Angeles, Jim Carrey spoke to a gathering that included formerly incarcerated people and people affected by gang involvement. He used Christian language about God, suffering, forgiveness, grace and Christ—but the speech documents what he said on that occasion, not an exclusive or current religious identity.
Where Carrey spoke, and who was listening
Carrey visited Homeboy Industries, a Los Angeles organization, after an invitation from its founder, Father Gregory Boyle, according to CBN’s July 21, 2017 report. The Christian Post’s July 22 account describes the audience as including former gang members and men and women who had previously been incarcerated. A Spanish-language report by El Universo, published July 27, 2017, also describes the visit and its religious content.
That makes “a room of inmates” an imprecise shorthand for the event. The published accounts identify a community of formerly incarcerated and gang-affected people; they do not establish that attendees were currently in prison.
What Carrey said about God and the audience
CBN quoted Carrey telling the gathering, “I believe that this room is filled with God.” He also praised the people present: “You are heroes to me, and I admire you. When you stepped through these doors, you decided to be a part of this family. You made a decision to transcend and to leave darkness behind, and it takes a champion to make that decision.”

These remarks connect his spiritual language to the audience’s choices and efforts, rather than offering a formal statement of religious affiliation. The quotations are attributed to Carrey in CBN’s contemporaneous report; they should not be treated as a certified transcript.
How he connected suffering, resentment and forgiveness
The Christian Post published a longer excerpt in which Carrey reflected on suffering and salvation. He described resentment as a route toward vengeance and harm, and contrasted it with forgiveness as a path to grace. He also invoked Christ’s suffering on the cross. In this speech, suffering was not simply an account of pain: Carrey presented it as a moment in which a person could choose how to respond.

The point was addressed to people whose lives had included hardship, but the available reporting does not establish that Carrey was describing any particular attendee’s experience. His message was one of admiration and encouragement, framed through Christian ideas of forgiveness and grace.
What the speech does—and does not—say about his religion
It is accurate to say that Carrey used Christian themes at Homeboy Industries: he spoke of God, Christ, the cross, forgiveness, grace and salvation. It would go beyond the evidence to conclude from this one appearance that he declared himself exclusively Christian or that the speech defines his present-day beliefs.

There is relevant historical context. In a 2004 60 Minutes interview, when asked whether he was Buddhist, Carrey replied, “Jesus. I’m a Buddhist, I’m a Muslim, I’m a Christian. I’m whatever you want me to be,” and said he saw the faiths as coming down to the same thing. That earlier answer reflects a pluralistic way of talking about religion at the time; it does not settle what he believes now.

The phrase “religious beliefs” fits the subject of the address, but the event is better understood as a speech in which Carrey shared spiritual convictions than as a definitive announcement of his religious identity. Likewise, the word “inmates” can suggest people currently imprisoned, whereas the contemporary accounts describe formerly incarcerated people and people affected by gang involvement. Keeping those distinctions clear preserves both the force of his message and what the reporting actually supports.
