Jennifer Lawrence described telling her father that private photos had been hacked and posted online as a terrible moment. In a 2014 Vanity Fair interview, she said no amount of money from The Hunger Games could make having to make that call worthwhile. The interview does not quote her saying the exact phrase “the call was scary.”
What Lawrence said about the call
In Sam Kashner’s interview for Vanity Fair, published October 20, 2014, Lawrence recalled having to tell her father what had happened to the private photos. She said: “When I have to make that phone call to my dad and tell him what’s happened . . . I don’t care how much money I get for The Hunger Games. . . . I promise you, anybody given the choice of that kind of money or having to make a phone call to tell your dad that something like that has happened, it’s not worth it.” Read the interview in Vanity Fair.
She remembered that her father was playing golf and in a good mood. Her description of the call as a terrible moment sits alongside that ordinary detail: she had to deliver deeply upsetting news while he was in the middle of his day.
Why Lawrence rejected the idea of an apology
Lawrence said she initially tried to write a public statement. Drafting it made her cry or angry, and she began writing an apology before recognizing that she had nothing to apologize for. She said the images had been shared against her will and that being an actress or public figure did not mean she had consented to their exposure.

She put the distinction plainly: “It is not a scandal. It is a sex crime. It is a sexual violation.” She also said, “Just because I’m a public figure, just because I’m an actress, does not mean that I asked for this.” These are her words in the interview; the account does not independently establish the technical details of how the photos were obtained or identify who was responsible.
What “scary” refers to
The title’s word “scary” should not be mistaken for a direct quotation about the phone call. In the interview, Lawrence calls the moment terrible and describes the choice between the money and making that call as not worth it. Separately, she says, “You expect paparazzi to be annoying. You don’t expect them to be terrifying.” That remark concerns paparazzi and fame, not her call to her father.

Why she spoke publicly
Lawrence said she hoped speaking about what happened might help other people who had been violated, and that the issue needed to be discussed. Her account centered on consent and privacy, not on blaming the person whose private images were exposed.
