The setup varies: you might dance in a separate lounge and rotate into the sauna, or find the DJ playing inside the hot room. Attendee accounts describe connection and movement, but also sweat, crowds and heat that can feel uncomfortable. Check the specific event’s layout and rules before you go.
What happens at a sober sauna rave?
There is no single standard format. At an Othership event described by attendee Avantika Krishna, people mingled and had non-alcoholic drinks before changing into clothes they could get wet in. They moved among a dance space, sauna, cold plunges and pop-ups. The dancing took place in a separate rest-and-recharge room, not inside the sauna. Krishna called that room “damp” rather than fully heated, and recalled drummers, a live saxophonist and two-minute sauna meditations led every hour. (Popsugar)
At a London event at The Sanctuary, by contrast, the DJ played house music in a circular sauna. A trombonist joined in as attendees danced and clapped. The i-D reporter found the heat unpleasant and stepped into the cooler adjoining area. That account makes clear that a sauna rave can mean dancing in the hot room itself, where heat and crowd tolerance shape the experience. (i-D)
A Resident Advisor listing for an &Soul event in London likewise described the sauna as the dance floor, with an adjacent cold room, plunges, hydration and a pop-up bar. The listing was for a specific event, not a promise of what every &Soul event—or a future one—will include. (Resident Advisor)

How does it feel to attend?
Music, movement and a different kind of socializing
Attendee Katie Griffin, who said she was approaching 11 years of sobriety, described Daybreaker’s signature morning parties as starting with breathwork or yoga and building into high-energy dancing with DJs, musicians and performers. She said she felt more connected to herself and others afterward than after a bar or party. That reflection is about Daybreaker’s usual morning events, not specifically a sauna-rave format, and it is her personal experience rather than a guaranteed result. (Popsugar)
Krishna recalled an eye-contact exercise at the end of her event as emotional and spiritual. These accounts suggest that some events deliberately make room for guided or reflective moments alongside music, but how much of that you encounter depends on the organizer and program.
Heat, sweat and crowds
The setting can be more physically intense than an ordinary dance floor. Krishna described a crowded room and clothes chosen with getting wet in mind. At The Sanctuary, the reporter left the hot room to cool down. If dancing in a heated space sounds unpleasant, look for an event where the dance floor is separate from the sauna, or where there is a clear cool-down area. A listing or organizer can clarify the layout; the label “sauna rave” alone cannot.

Who goes—and who might enjoy it?
“Sober” describes the event’s alcohol-free character; it does not mean attendance is limited to people in recovery. Krishna said she valued being among people who were there to connect. Griffin recommended Daybreaker to people looking for movement and connection without substances. Griffin’s sobriety and her comments are personal context, not an entry requirement or a claim that everyone at these events is sober.
The format is not for everyone. In British Vogue, Daisy Jones offered a skeptical view that some sober wellness parties can feel over-organized or earnest to people who prefer conventional nightlife or a quiet spa visit. That is an opinion, but it points to a real choice: these events combine wellness programming and social dancing rather than simply reproducing a club night without alcohol. (British Vogue)

These differences are visible in the reported examples: one account has a separate dance room, another places the DJ in the sauna, and the facilities and rules in a listing belong to that particular event.

Krishna advised approaching the event with an open mind. Griffin suggested arriving early, wearing something that feels joyful and not being afraid to go solo. The attendee feature also recommends hydration and being ready to sweat. These are attendee suggestions, not medical advice or universal requirements. Follow the venue’s guidance, and leave the hot room or stop participating if you feel unwell.

Choose clothing that fits the organizer’s rules and that you are comfortable getting wet. Krishna put it this way: “The point was to be creative, bring different festival clothes, whatever you’re comfortable with getting – obviously – wet.” A quick-drying swimwear or other wet-appropriate outfit may be practical, but no particular product or costume is required.

Event logistics can be highly specific. For example, a Resident Advisor listing for the October 11, 2025 &Soul event said changing rooms and lockers were provided, towels could be rented for £1 or brought from home, and non-alcoholic drinks were available. It specified an 18+ minimum and said the event would be professionally filmed, with attendance consenting to promotional use of footage. Those were terms for that historical event; check current terms for any event you plan to attend. (Resident Advisor)
What attendee reporting can—and can’t—tell you
The accounts offer a useful feel for possible formats and reactions, not a guarantee about every event. A Popsugar feature attributed a 92 percent increase in sober-curious gatherings between 2023 and 2024 to Eventbrite. The reviewed account does not identify the dataset, definition, geography or methodology behind that figure, so it should not be read as a measure of sauna raves or of all sober events. (Popsugar)
Othership, Daybreaker, The Sanctuary and &Soul are examples discussed in the attendee reporting; schedules, availability and event policies can change. Check the operator’s current event information before making plans.
