Tubi is a free, legal streaming service that shows movies, TV programs, documentaries, and live channels in exchange for showing ads. It has no ordinary monthly subscription charge, but its catalog rotates, availability differs by country, and Tubi currently does not offer an ad-free option.

What is Tubi?

Tubi is a free, legal streaming service that offers movies, television shows, documentaries, live channels, and original programming in exchange for showing advertisements. It is an AVOD service—“advertising-supported video on demand”—so you do not pay a monthly subscription for the ordinary service. Tubi says it does not require a credit card to watch, but it also says there is currently no ad-free plan.

The practical trade-off is simple: Tubi costs nothing to watch, but commercial breaks appear during movies and shows. Its catalog changes over time and differs by country, so Tubi is best understood as a rotating free library rather than a permanent replacement for cable or a paid streaming subscription.

Who owns Tubi?

Tubi is owned by Fox Corporation through Tubi Media Group. Fox announced its agreement to acquire Tubi in March 2020 for approximately $440 million in net cash consideration at closing. Tubi says the service was founded in 2014 and is headquartered in San Francisco.

Roku Streaming Stick HD with Voice Remote
  • HD streaming made simple: With America’s number 1 TV streaming platform,* exploring popular apps—plus tons of free movies, shows, and live TV—is as easy as it is fun. *Based on hours streamed—Hypothesis Group
  • Compact without compromises: The sleek design of Roku Streaming Stick won’t block neighboring HDMI ports, and it even powers from your TV alone, plugging into the back and staying out of sight. No wall outlet, no extra cords, no clutter.
  • No more juggling remotes: Power up your TV, adjust the volume, and control your Roku device with one remote. Use your voice to quickly search, play entertainment, and more.
  • Shows on the go: Take your TV to-go when traveling—without needing to log into someone else’s device.
  • TV, simplified: With setup that only takes minutes, a simple-to-navigate Home Screen, and an uncluttered remote control that does all you need—Roku makes it easier to watch the TV you love.

The service operates in the United States, Canada, Mexico, Latin America, the United Kingdom, and Australia, although the titles, channels, languages, and features available in one market may not be available in another. You can start at Tubi’s official website.

How does Tubi work?

Tubi licenses movies and television programs from studios and independent distributors, then funds the service by selling advertising around that content. You select a title or channel, watch the programming online, and encounter ad breaks during playback.

Tubi describes its advertising load as lighter than traditional broadcast television or cable, but “free” does not mean commercial-free. Tubi’s help information says it does not currently offer an ad-free viewing option. There is also no guarantee that a particular movie or series will remain available indefinitely.

What can you watch on Tubi?

Tubi has a broad and frequently changing mix of movies and television programs from partners such as Paramount, Lionsgate, MGM, and independent distributors. Its categories commonly include:

  • Documentaries and documentary series
  • Action, adventure, comedy, crime, drama, horror, romance, science fiction, and thrillers
  • Anime and animation
  • Family and children’s programming
  • Reality television and lifestyle shows
  • True crime and investigative programming
  • Sports stories and sports-related programs
  • Classic television
  • Tubi Originals

For documentary viewers, Tubi can be useful when you want to browse by subject rather than follow one specific premium series. The selection may include true crime, history, nature, entertainment, sports, and social-issue programming, but availability depends on your country and the date you search. Check Tubi directly before promising that a particular documentary is available.

Tubi also promotes creator-led programming through its Creatorverse initiative, alongside hundreds of Tubi Originals. Company-reported audience and catalog figures can change, so they should be treated as dated corporate claims rather than permanent measurements.

Does Tubi have live TV?

Yes, but its live-TV offering is not the same as a full cable replacement. In the United States, Tubi offers live, linear-style channels that play continuously rather than waiting for you to choose an individual movie or episode.

Tubi’s U.S. help information lists more than 260 unique channels, including channels and feeds covering:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • National and local news
  • Sports and sports news
  • Movies and classic television
  • Comedy, reality, and lifestyle programming
  • Children’s shows
  • Science and nature
  • Spanish-language programming
  • Tubi Originals

The listed lineup has included offerings such as FOX Sports on Tubi, NFL Channel, NHL, and DAZN Ringside, but live-channel availability can change and may depend on your location. Some special live events may also have their own device, language, or registration requirements. For example, Tubi required a free account for its Super Bowl LIX live event; that requirement should not be generalized to every title or channel.

Is Tubi really free?

Yes. The standard Tubi service has no monthly subscription charge. You generally do not need to enter credit-card information to use it. The cost is that you watch advertising and accept a catalog that rotates.

Some features or special events may ask you to create a free account or sign in. That is different from requiring a paid subscription. A free account can provide useful features such as:

  • Syncing your viewing activity across supported devices
  • Saving titles to a watch list
  • Continuing playback on another device

Because requirements can differ by title and event, the most accurate answer is: you can use Tubi without paying, while a free account may be needed for particular features or programming.

Is Tubi legal and safe?

Tubi is a legitimate, licensed streaming platform owned by Fox Corporation. Tubi describes itself as “100% free” and “100% legal,” and says viewers do not need a VPN to access the service. It also says users should not encounter the malicious redirects, security warnings, or pop-ups associated with illegal streaming sites.

Those statements describe Tubi’s own service and safety claims; they are not a substitute for independent security testing. For the safest experience, use the official Tubi website or an official app from your device’s authorized app store. Avoid look-alike websites, unofficial APK files, browser pop-ups claiming that you must install a video player, and services promising unauthorized access to restricted titles.

What devices support Tubi?

You can watch Tubi through a web browser at tubitv.com or through apps on many phones, televisions, streaming players, game consoles, and cable-provider platforms. Tubi’s published U.S. device list includes:

  • Android and iOS mobile devices
  • Amazon Fire TV and Fire TV Stick
  • Android TV, Google TV, Chromecast, and Apple TV
  • Roku, Samsung, LG, Vizio, Hisense, and supported Sony televisions or platforms
  • PlayStation 4 and PlayStation 5
  • Xbox One and newer Xbox consoles
  • TiVo and selected Comcast Xfinity and Cox platforms

Exact compatibility can change by model, operating system, and country. If the Tubi app is missing from your television’s app store, that model may not be supported even if another television from the same brand is.

How to watch Tubi on a TV

  1. Check the TV’s app store. Search for “Tubi,” install the official app, and open it.
  2. Use a supported game console or streaming box. Install Tubi from the platform’s official store.
  3. Cast from a phone or tablet. Tubi supports Chromecast, AirPlay, and Tubi Linking on supported devices.
  4. Use an external streaming device. This is an option when the television does not have a compatible built-in app.

For example, an Amazon Fire TV Stick is an optional way to add Tubi to a compatible television because Tubi officially lists Amazon Fire TV and Fire TV Stick support. The hardware is a separate purchase; Tubi itself remains free. You do not need a streaming stick if you already have a supported smart TV, console, streaming box, or computer.

When casting or linking, the phone and television or receiver generally need to be connected to the same Wi-Fi network. Tubi recommends keeping both the app and the device’s operating system or firmware updated.

Does Tubi require an account?

Not every use of Tubi should be described as having the same account requirement. Tubi promotes free registration because an account enables syncing, watch-list features, and continued playback across devices. Some live events or special programs may require sign-in, while the ordinary viewing flow may allow you to start watching without a paid membership.

Does Tubi have captions and audio description?

Tubi supports accessibility features, but availability is title- and device-dependent.

  • Closed captions: Many qualifying full-length movies and television episodes offer captions when the content partner supplies them.
  • Audio description: Tubi maintains an audio-description collection available on many supported mobile, connected-TV, gaming, and cable-provider platforms.

If captions or audio description are essential, check the individual title and the controls on your particular device. Support is available for many programs, not universally guaranteed for every item in the catalog.

What are Tubi’s main advantages?

  • No monthly fee: The ordinary service does not require a paid subscription or credit card.
  • Broad variety: The catalog covers movies, television, documentaries, anime, true crime, reality, family programming, and Tubi Originals.
  • Live channels: U.S. viewers can browse free linear channels for news, sports, entertainment, local news, and niche interests.
  • Wide device support: Tubi works across browsers, phones, smart TVs, streaming devices, and consoles.
  • Useful accessibility options: Captions and audio description are available for supported titles and devices.

What are Tubi’s limitations?

  • Advertisements are unavoidable: Tubi currently says it does not offer an ad-free tier.
  • The catalog rotates: A movie or series can leave, and the selection differs between countries.
  • It is not complete cable replacement: Tubi does not provide every broadcast channel, premium network, or live sporting event.
  • Live channels vary: The U.S. lineup, local feeds, and sports offerings can change by location and over time.
  • Some features need a free account: Special events and cross-device features may require sign-in.
  • Streaming depends on your connection: Network congestion, competing household traffic, outdated apps, device performance, and firmware can all affect playback.

What to do if Tubi buffers or stops playing

Buffering does not automatically mean you need repair software or a new streaming device. Tubi’s own troubleshooting guidance points first to ordinary network and device checks:

  1. Check whether other devices or apps are using a large amount of bandwidth.
  2. Pause downloads and reduce competing network activity.
  3. Close and reopen the Tubi app.
  4. Restart the television, streaming device, phone, or console.
  5. Install the latest Tubi app update.
  6. Install available operating-system or device-firmware updates.
  7. Try Tubi on another supported device or a wired connection, if available, to isolate whether the problem is the network or the original device.

If the problem affects only one title, it may be a title-specific or temporary service issue. If every streaming service buffers, investigate the home network or internet connection rather than treating Tubi as the cause.

Is Tubi worth using?

Tubi is a strong choice if you want free, legal access to a changing selection of movies, documentaries, television shows, and live channels and you are willing to watch advertisements. It is particularly useful as a supplement to paid streaming services or as a way to browse programming without adding another monthly bill.
