The UAE SWAT Challenge is an international tactical competition hosted by Dubai Police at Al Ruwayyah Training City in Dubai. Police, military, and correctional teams face five timed challenges combining shooting, breaching, hostage and officer rescue, climbing, rappelling, and obstacle work. Results from the individual events are converted into cumulative standings, and the team with the highest total is the overall winner.
What the UAE SWAT Challenge is
The UAE SWAT Challenge is built to test how a tactical unit performs when accuracy, physical strength, technical handling and speed are required at the same time. It is not a single shooting match. Competitors move through structures, engage targets, carry equipment or weighted dummies, climb and descend towers, and complete obstacles while following range-safety procedures.
Dubai Police stages the competition annually at Al Ruwayyah Training City in Dubai. The official FAQ says the event is usually held in February, although the schedule has moved between editions. The 2026 competition ran from February 7 to 11. The 2027 edition is scheduled for January 23 to 27, 2027, according to a September 9, 2026 report by the Emirates News Agency (WAM). Dates should therefore be checked for the specific edition rather than assumed from the usual February timing.
Each challenge produces a performance result, and those results feed the overall classification. The organizing committee described the format for 2027 this way: points are awarded for each performance, with the team recording the highest cumulative score crowned the overall winner.

The five UAE SWAT Challenge events
The event names can vary between official pages. The FAQ calls the second slot Tactical, while other event material calls it Hostage Rescue. Likewise, Tower Assault is also called High Tower. These are alternate names for the same event slots, not additional challenges.
| Event | Other official label | Published event lineup | Main tasks |
|---|---|---|---|
| Assault | Five members, including one sniper | Timed team shooting, coordination, target accuracy and decisions under pressure | |
| Tactical | Hostage Rescue | Six members, including one sniper | Breach a structure, engage targets in assigned lanes and extract a dummy hostage |
| Officer Rescue | Five members, including one sniper | Breach, shoot targets, cross obstacles and rescue a downed officer | |
| Tower Assault | High Tower | Five members: three assaulters and two snipers | Shooting, tower climbing, rappelling and obstacles while carrying weapons and gear |
| Obstacle Course | The FAQ lists the obstacles but does not specify a separate lineup size | A 19-obstacle physical course involving climbing, crawling, swinging, water and a tower descent |
Assault
Assault is a timed team-shooting challenge. Its emphasis is coordinated movement, accurate target engagement and sound decisions when the clock is running. The FAQ identifies a five-person event team, including one sniper. Time and applied penalties determine the result, but the published FAQ does not provide a complete current penalty table. That means a reader should not infer the value of a miss, unsafe action or procedural error without the rulebook for the relevant edition.
Tactical or Hostage Rescue
The six-person Tactical team breaches a structure, engages targets in assigned lanes and removes a dummy hostage. The event combines a physical entry with controlled firearms handling and an extraction task, so a fast run can still lose ground through mistakes.
The FAQ describes the score as completion time plus penalties. Examples of penalized conduct include safety violations, incorrect procedures and missed targets. In the event-level result, the fastest team with the fewest penalties is the winner under the published description. The exact penalty schedule and any detailed tie procedure are edition-specific matters for the current rules.

Officer Rescue
Officer Rescue is another five-person event, including one sniper. Teams breach, shoot targets, negotiate obstacles and reach a downed-officer dummy or equivalent rescue objective. The sequence tests whether a unit can maintain tactical control while shifting quickly from engagement to casualty recovery. The FAQ identifies the lineup and core tasks but does not publish a full scoring matrix in the material available for this explanation.
Tower Assault or High Tower
Tower Assault uses five people divided into three assaulters and two snipers. Competitors shoot, climb a tower, complete obstacle elements and rappel while carrying their weapons and gear. A Rappel Master supervises the descent, and the activity is conducted under the competition’s safety protocols. The combination of height, load carriage and precision makes this distinct from a conventional flat-ground shooting stage.
Obstacle Course
The FAQ describes 19 obstacles. They include rope climbs, monkey bars, Jacob’s Ladder, traverse walls, cargo nets, barrel rolls, rope swings, climbing walls, low crawls, water pits and fireman’s-tower descents. The course is intended to expose differences in grip strength, balance, speed, recovery and team conditioning. The published event description does not give a separate team-size rule, so that detail should be taken from the edition’s current schedule or rulebook.
How many people are on a UAE SWAT Challenge team?
For the 2027 registration, a team may register a maximum of eight people, including the captain. Those registered members can rotate between events. This is the squad size, not the number who necessarily start every challenge.

The FAQ gives smaller event-level lineups: five for Assault, five for Officer Rescue, five for Tower Assault and six for Tactical or Hostage Rescue. A team that does not have the required roster ready when an event begins is disqualified. The practical distinction is important: an eight-person registered squad provides depth and rotation, while each stage has its own published starting requirement.
Who is eligible to compete?
The current registration page reviewed for the 2027 edition requires every competitor to be a sworn officer from one of three types of institution:
- Law-enforcement agencies
- Military organizations
- Correctional institutions
This is not an open civilian fitness race. Teams are expected to arrive with professional tactical experience and the ability to comply with a controlled firearms environment.
The registration material lists several capability expectations: safe small-arms handling, rope work and climbing, safe use of mechanical breaching equipment, and medical and physical fitness. These are practical prerequisites for the events rather than optional training suggestions.

Weapons, ammunition and safety rules
The 2027 competition follows cold-range rules. Weapons and ammunition may not be carried outside designated range areas, and safety officers supervise handling and unloading. This separates movement around the venue from the controlled periods in which firearms are used.
A separate safety notice says that a team bringing firearms into the United Arab Emirates must submit an itinerary of its firearms and ammunition to the committee for evaluation and approval. The notice recommends standard-issue deployment firearms and sets additional handling and equipment restrictions. Those procedures are operational requirements for participating teams, not a checklist for spectators. A team should rely on the current organizer notices and applicable UAE import and transport requirements, because equipment permissions and procedures can change by edition.
How scoring works
There are two levels of scoring:
- Event result: A team is judged on its performance in an individual challenge. Time and applicable penalties are central in Assault and Tactical, with Tactical explicitly described as completion time plus penalties for errors such as missed targets, unsafe actions or incorrect procedures.
- Overall standings: Points from the performances are accumulated across the five events. The team with the highest cumulative score takes the overall title.
This distinction prevents a common misunderstanding. Winning one stage does not automatically win the tournament; a team must build the strongest total across all five challenges. The available announcement and FAQ do not establish an exact point-conversion chart for every rank, a complete penalty schedule for every event or a tie-breaking formula. Those details should be taken from the applicable edition’s official rulebook rather than guessed from a result sheet.

- Registration and verification: Teams confirm their roster, credentials and required documentation. For 2027, the registered squad can contain up to eight people including the captain.
- Safety and equipment checks: Firearms, ammunition and specialist equipment are handled under organizer supervision. Teams transporting firearms into the UAE must have submitted the required itinerary for approval.
- Event lineups: The captain selects the members needed for each stage, observing the five- or six-person requirement published for that event. Missing the required lineup at the start can result in disqualification.
- Timed stages: Teams complete the shooting, breaching, rescue, tower and obstacle tasks. Judges record time, target results, procedural compliance and penalties applicable under the current rules.
- Accumulation and award: Event performances produce points, which are added to determine the overall winner.
Dubai Police’s account of the 2026 edition gives a sense of the demands: teams were expected to combine speed and accuracy, handle multiple weapons, carry heavy dummies, negotiate obstacles and rappel from a tower. That description is useful context for the type of work involved, but it does not replace the rulebook for a particular year.
Where and when spectators can attend
The venue is Al Ruwayyah Training City in Dubai. The event is open to spectators, and official materials describe free entry or free visitor passes. Earplugs are available at registration, a practical accommodation for a venue where live firearms training and impact noise are part of the program.
Accommodation is not included with participation or visitor access. The FAQ says Dubai Police has negotiated with several quality hotels near the venue, but it does not make a hotel booking part of the event entry. Visitors should check the live visitor-pass instructions, access hours, transport guidance and current hotel information before traveling, because these arrangements can change.
How large is the international field?
The UAE SWAT Challenge FAQ for the 2025 edition reported 105 teams from 46 countries. That figure belongs to 2025 and should not be presented as the size of every edition. The official mission page also contains a separate facts-and-figures statement referring to 48 countries and 109 SWAT teams, but the edition context is not clear in the published material. The two sets of numbers should therefore not be merged.

The reviewed page does not clearly establish that this figure applies to the 2027 edition, so it is safest to treat it as an FAQ figure requiring confirmation in the current year’s materials rather than as a guaranteed 2027 purse.
What makes the format different from a normal shooting match?
The Challenge rewards a combination of abilities that are usually separated in training competitions. A team can lose time through a missed target, but it can also be slowed by an unsafe procedure, a poor breach, a failed obstacle or an inefficient rescue. Physical power alone is insufficient because the obstacle and tower work must be completed while maintaining tactical discipline. Conversely, a highly accurate team still needs conditioning, rope skills and coordinated communication.
The roster design reinforces that team emphasis. Eight people may be registered for 2027, while only five or six are used in a given event. Captains can therefore manage fatigue and match specialists to the stage, provided the required event lineup is present when the start signal is given.
