During a banquet, he uses vessels taken from the Jerusalem temple; a hand writes a message on the palace wall, and the prophet Daniel interprets it as judgment on the king and his kingdom.
What happens in Daniel 5?
- Belshazzar’s banquet: The king hosts a feast for a thousand nobles and orders sacred vessels from the Jerusalem temple brought in. He and his guests drink from them while praising gods made of precious metals and other materials.
- The writing on the wall: A hand appears and writes on the palace wall. Belshazzar is terrified. The wise men he summons cannot read or interpret the inscription.
- Daniel is summoned: The queen recalls Daniel’s reputation for wisdom and interpreting difficult matters. Belshazzar offers Daniel purple clothing, a gold collar, and third rank in the kingdom if he can explain the writing.
- Daniel gives the interpretation: Daniel refuses to let the reward shape his answer. He recalls how Nebuchadnezzar was humbled and rebukes Belshazzar for not humbling himself and for dishonoring God with the temple vessels.
- The king’s fall: Daniel receives the promised honors. Belshazzar is killed that night, and Darius the Mede takes control, according to the chapter.
The narrative links the banquet’s misuse of the temple vessels to Daniel’s accusation: Belshazzar has exalted himself and dishonored the God who holds his life and kingdom in his hands. The story is presented in Daniel 5 in the NET Bible.
What does the handwriting on the wall mean?
Daniel reads the inscription as a three-part judgment. The kingdom’s days have been counted and brought to an end; Belshazzar has been weighed and found lacking; and his kingdom will be divided and given to the Medes and Persians. In plain language, the message says that the king’s rule is ending and that he has failed the divine judgment described by Daniel.
English spellings of the inscription vary among Bible editions. The NET Bible gives MENE, MENE, TEQEL, and PHARSIN; Mechon-Mamre gives MENE MENE, TEKEL UPHARSIN and renders the final word as PERES. The wording differs, but Daniel’s interpretation conveys the same judgment. See the NET Bible text and Mechon-Mamre’s Daniel 5.

Why is the name sometimes written “Balthazar”?
“Balthazar” is a familiar alternate form, but Daniel 5 spells the king’s name Belshazzar. If you are looking for the biblical character associated with the writing on the wall, Daniel 5 is the chapter to read.
What does Daniel 5 say about Belshazzar’s identity?
Daniel 5 calls Belshazzar Nebuchadnezzar’s son. A scholarly article in the Journal of Hebrew Scriptures notes a different historical identification: Babylonian sources name Belshazzar as the son of Nabonidus. These are not the same claim. The first describes what Daniel’s narrative says; the second summarizes the identification in Babylonian sources. The discrepancy means the passage should not be treated as a straightforward contemporary biography. The cited article, “Daniel Narratives,” supports this distinction; it is not, by itself, a complete reconstruction of Babylon’s fall.

Why do some Bibles number the ending differently?
The line reporting Belshazzar’s death and Darius’s takeover appears as Daniel 5:31 in the NET presentation, while some editions number the same final line as Daniel 6:1. When following a verse reference, check the numbering in the Bible edition you are using.
