The name’s most direct explanation comes from Jay-Z himself. He said the couple began with a prenatal nickname, “Blueberry,” and later shortened it to Blue. Earlier press coverage offered other readings of “Ivy” and “Blue,” but those were speculation, not the parents’ stated reasons.
Where the name came from, in Jay-Z’s account
In an exclusive CBS Mornings interview reported by CBS News on October 27, 2023, Jay-Z described how the name developed. The couple had reportedly planned to name their daughter Brooklyn, a reference to the borough where Jay-Z grew up. During prenatal visits, they began calling the baby “Blueberry.” In his words: “We was calling her Blueberry. Like, ‘Look at the little blueberry.’ You know, it was like a nickname.” They then “took the ‘berry’ off of it and called her Blue.”
According to that account, the name was not chosen for a color preference or a branding plan. It grew out of an affectionate nickname that the parents kept after the baby arrived.
Early theories about “Ivy” and “Blue”
Before the parents explained the name, media coverage offered its own readings. These circulated as speculation and should be kept apart from Jay-Z’s account.

Ivy and the Roman numeral IV
Early reports, including coverage that Good Morning America carried on January 9, 2012 and attributed to People, suggested that “Ivy” echoed IV, the Roman numeral for four, as a nod to Jay-Z’s and Beyoncé’s family or to Jay-Z’s later album numbering. This was a press theory. Jay-Z’s later interview does not present IV as the reason for the name.
Blue and Jay-Z’s music or imagery
Some commentary connected “Blue” to Jay-Z’s music and to blue imagery in his work. Coverage of that kind framed the link as context for why the word might appeal to them, not as a documented intent. Because the parents’ own explanation centers on the Blueberry nickname, the music connection remains a reading, not an answer.

Beyoncé’s Solnit post
Marie Claire UK reported on June 15, 2012 that Beyoncé had posted an excerpt from Rebecca Solnit’s A Field Guide to Getting Lost that discusses the color blue. The post is suggestive of the couple’s interest in the color, but it does not explain how the name was chosen, and no source ties it directly to the naming decision.
What is and is not established
- Established by Jay-Z’s account: the Blueberry nickname came first, the parents dropped “berry,” and the couple had considered Brooklyn before settling on the nickname.
- Reported but unconfirmed: the IV reading of “Ivy” and the music or imagery reading of “Blue.”
- Not established: any statement from either parent that the name was designed around a numeral, an album, or a color symbol.
Readers searching for a hidden meaning should treat the Ivy/IV and Blue-as-symbol explanations as press interpretations. The most reliable account remains the one the father gave on record.

Why the theories spread
Celebrity names attract interpretation, especially when the parents are known for dense references in their work. A nickname that became a given name looks like a deliberate code from the outside. The CBS interview is the strongest evidence available, and it points to a simpler origin than the theories suggest.
