Spoilers for the premise and selected lore revelations.
ULTRAKILL imagines a world after humanity’s extinction, where blood-starved machines descend into Hell to find fuel. You play as V1, one of those machines. The game’s story unfolds through its levels, records, books and secret-mission testaments rather than as one continuous screenplay—and because the game remains in Early Access, its larger narrative is still ongoing.
Why does V1 go to Hell?
Blood sustains the machines left behind after humanity’s extinction. As blood becomes scarce on the surface, the machines race into Hell in search of more. That premise gives V1’s descent a stark purpose: survival. Blood also restores health during combat, tying the story’s central resource to the player’s moment-to-moment experience. The Steam store description frames the game around fast movement, a varied arsenal, style scoring and exploration of levels inspired by Dante’s Inferno.
How does ULTRAKILL tell its story?
Rather than presenting the plot as a steady sequence of cutscenes, ULTRAKILL scatters its worldbuilding across the places V1 explores and the texts players discover. Important clues appear in environmental details, enemy and terminal entries, books, intermission material and secret-level testaments.

Secret missions can end with testaments meant to hint at events in the game’s world. A community lore guide reproduces many of these texts and attributes this explanation of their purpose to creator Hakita: “the idea that each secret mission would have a little ‘testament’ at the end that was written by god that hints at the events that have unfolded in the game world.” The guide is a useful map to scattered material, but it also contains interpretation; distinguish its commentary from text presented as in-game writing.
What do the Hell and Heaven revelations suggest?
One testament reproduced in the guide gives Hell a creator and a bleak origin. Its speaker says, “I HAVE CREATED HELL… …And now I can no longer unmake it”. The text presents Hell not simply as a place V1 enters, but as a creation that its maker can no longer undo. The testament itself does not resolve every question about its speaker or the full history of the setting.
Another in-game passage, presented as a book entry, describes Sisyphus secretly assembling an army for an insurrection against Heaven. It contrasts his violent strategy with Minos’s peaceful revolution and frames the rebellion as a response to the damned losing their minds, bodies and souls under Heaven’s rule. This is a summary of a passage reproduced in the community guide, not a separate verification of the game’s text files.
Is Limbo real?
Hakita has directly described Limbo’s apparent natural features as artificial. The guide quotes the creator: “None of the water in Limbo is real. They’re holographic projections, just like how the skies are just screens and how the nature sounds are just coming from speakers.” That makes Limbo’s pastoral appearance part of its constructed environment, not merely a fan theory about what the scenery represents.

Is ULTRAKILL’s story finished?
No. The Steam listing labels ULTRAKILL as Early Access and describes a planned three-act game. Its store text describes the build as including the complete Prelude, Acts I and II, plus layers seven and eight of a planned nine. Release details can change, so the listing is the place to check the game’s current status. The available premise and lore establish an ongoing story, not a conclusive ending.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. How should you follow the lore?
- Start with the game itself. Read the records, books and testaments you encounter, and pay attention to environmental details. These are the primary material for understanding the story.
- Use a guide to locate and organize clues. The community compilation can help connect texts that are spread across levels, but it was last updated April 16, 2024, so it may not cover later material.
- Separate explicit text from interpretation. Treat a passage reproduced as an in-game testament or book entry differently from a guide author’s explanation of what it means.
Steam lists Arsi “Hakita” Patala as developer and New Blood Interactive as publisher, and describes the game as single-player. Its store page also warns that it contains violence and gore.
