Chara is the stage name of the Japanese singer-songwriter, and the origin she has given is a nickname from her school days. In a 2016 interview, she said a teacher gave her the name when she was nine, in third grade, and tied it to the Japanese word しゃらっと. The story is her own childhood recollection rather than a documented etymology, but it is the account behind the name, and it is the one to start with.
A teacher’s nickname that stayed
According to Chara’s account in a 2016 interview reported by Mainichi Kirei, the nickname came from a teacher she remembered fondly. She described the teacher as kind and recalled pupils visiting the teacher’s home, staying over, and cooking together. The nickname outlasted the classroom. When Chara began performing as an adult, she kept it as her artist name.

What しゃらっと meant to her
The word is the core of the explanation. Chara described herself as a crybaby as a child, but said that after crying she could switch gears smoothly and steady herself for whatever came next. The nickname captured that quick recovery.
Mainichi Kirei prints Chara’s account in Japanese. The paraphrase here is a close translation of her meaning, not her exact wording. If you quote her directly, use the original Japanese from the interview and provide your own faithful translation.

From a schoolyard name to a song-based career
Chara’s music story runs alongside the name without changing its origin. She said that at 19, after her first serious heartbreak, she began making music from feelings she could not otherwise work through. She had played keyboard in amateur bands and enjoyed composing, but she had not planned to sing. Her song “Violet Blue” grew out of that heartbreak and helped open the way to her debut. Mainichi Kirei and CINRA both report this career context from interviews with her.
Two meanings of “Chara” you may find online
Searches for the word often return a different entry: Χαρά, a Greek feminine given name meaning happiness or joy. It is a separate naming history. It is not the explanation Chara gave for her own name, and it should not be presented as such. The only Chara in this story is the Japanese singer-songwriter.
Her storytelling beyond music
Chara’s creative range extends to picture books. In a 2018 interview with BEAMS, she described her approach to storytelling in her own words:
“I created a story as if I were creating a song because I wanted to speak as if I were singing, and sing as I spoke.” (Chara, interviewed by BEAMS, 2018; English translation by BEAMS)

The same interview describes a picture book she wrote and that her younger sister, illustrator Mitsuko Watabiki, illustrated. The sources do not establish whether that book is currently in print or available from any particular retailer.
Figures in the coverage and what they measure
| Figure | Source and date | What it measures | Qualification |
|---|---|---|---|
| More than one million copies | CINRA, 2016 | Sales of Chara’s 1997 album Junior Sweet | Reported in a retrospective feature. It is not an independently verified certification. |

Where to start with her music
The most direct entry point is Naked & Sweet, the 2016 best-of set that Mainichi Kirei describes as three discs and 45 songs spanning her career. CINRA’s 2016 feature included a retailer listing for the standard edition. Both sources date from 2016, so confirm the edition, format, and current availability before you buy.
If you want to go further into her creative work, the picture book described in the 2018 BEAMS interview is the next step, though its current availability is not established.
Taken together, the name story is a childhood nickname that Chara has explained in her own words. Her later account of the heartbreak and “Violet Blue” explains how she came to sing, and both accounts come from interviews rather than independent documentation.
