In George Orwell’s Nineteen Eighty-Four (1984), a memory hole is a disposal opening in the Ministry of Truth. Documents dropped through it are carried to furnaces and destroyed. The device also represents the Party’s effort to erase evidence that contradicts its version of the past.
What the memory hole is
In Part I, Chapter IV, Orwell describes a wire-grated opening in the wall of Winston Smith’s office, used to dispose of waste paper. Similar openings are found throughout the Ministry of Truth. Papers dropped through the flap are carried by warm air to furnaces. The narration explains: “For some reason they were nicknamed memory holes.”

The phrase is part of the narrator’s description, not dialogue spoken by a named character.
How it helps the Party rewrite history
Winston’s job includes altering records so they match the Party’s current account. The memory hole completes that process: after a record is revised, the earlier document can be destroyed. The Party is not merely adding a new version to the public record; it is removing evidence that could expose the change.
#1 Best Overall
Without the original documents, people have less basis for challenging what the Party says happened. The disposal slot therefore supports the Ministry’s broader control over the information people can see and read.

The physical destruction of documents gives the memory hole its symbolic force. It represents deliberate historical erasure: when records that contradict the official story disappear, the Party can make its account harder to question. This is an interpretation of the device’s role in Orwell’s novel, rather than a claim that the fictional mechanism describes every real system of government.
