Peterson. It is paired with “Valar Morghulis,” meaning “all men must die.”
What does “Valar Dohaeris” mean?
The phrase translates as “all men must serve.” Peterson discussed the translation in interviews with CBS and TIME; the Los Angeles Times also identifies it as High Valyrian.
How it relates to “Valar Morghulis”
“Valar Morghulis” means “all men must die.” The two expressions are paired in the story, contrasting service with mortality. That contrast can invite readings about duty or the inevitability of death, but those are interpretations; the translation itself does not establish one exclusive symbolic meaning.
Where the phrase comes from
High Valyrian is a constructed language created for the television series, not a naturally evolved human language. Peterson said George R. R. Martin’s books already contained the two phrases, which he used as templates while developing the language’s grammar. In a CBS interview, Peterson explained that he used them to build out the verbal and noun systems. He told TIME that the pair helped him develop High Valyrian’s conjugation system.

Within the fictional world, High Valyrian is described as mostly dead, in a role comparable to Latin. That is an in-world analogy, not a claim that the constructed language shares Latin’s real history, as the Los Angeles Times notes.
