TV-14 is a U.S. television rating meaning “Parents Strongly Cautioned”: parents may find the program unsuitable for children younger than 14. PG-13 is a separate Motion Picture Association (MPA) rating for films, cautioning that some material may be inappropriate for children under 13. The similar wording does not make the ratings interchangeable; check the specific title’s content descriptors and decide what is appropriate for your child.
TV-14 and PG-13: what the ratings mean
TV-14 belongs to the TV Parental Guidelines system for television programming. Its label, “Parents Strongly Cautioned,” signals that parents may find the material unsuitable for children younger than 14. It is guidance, not a guarantee about what every child of a particular age can watch. See the TV Parental Guidelines ratings and the FCC’s documentation on the TV Parental Guidelines.

PG-13 is an MPA film rating. The MPA defines it as “Parents Strongly Cautioned. Some Material May Be Inappropriate for Children Under 13.” The association says: “A PG-13 rating is a sterner warning by the Rating Board to parents to determine whether their children under age 13 should view the motion picture, as some material might not be suited for them.” This is the MPA’s wording from its PG-13 rating page.
Is TV-14 the same as PG-13?
No. TV-14 rates television programming, while PG-13 rates motion pictures. Their cautionary wording is similar, but the systems use different age thresholds and apply to different media. Neither label establishes that a TV-14 episode and a PG-13 film have the same content or intensity, and they are not a conversion chart. Compare the rating and the title-specific information rather than assuming one label is stricter than the other.

What do the letters after TV-14 mean?
A TV-14 rating may include one or more content descriptors. The letters indicate the type of content that contributed to the guidance; they do not mean every program contains all four categories.
- D — suggestive dialogue
- L — coarse or crude language
- S — sexual content or situations
- V — violence
The letters provide broad categories, not a scene-by-scene account. The TV Parental Guidelines FAQ explains the system and its descriptors.

How to decide whether a title is suitable
- Check the rating and its descriptors. For a TV program, look for any D, L, S, or V label alongside TV-14. For a film, read the PG-13 rating and that film’s descriptor, which explains why it received the rating. The MPA provides more detail in its Resources & FAQ.
- Consider the specific content and your child. A category label will not tell you how a particular scene is presented or how your child may respond. Make the decision for the individual child and your family.
The American Academy of Pediatrics also advises parents to consider what children actually see when evaluating media ratings. Its guide, “Age-Appropriate Media: Can You Trust Parental Guidance Ratings?”, offers additional context for using ratings.
