What Is the IDFA Forum, and How Does It Support Documentary Projects?

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The IDFA Forum is the International Documentary Film Festival Amsterdam’s selective co-production and co-financing market. It brings documentary and new-media project teams together with commissioners, funders, co-producers, sales agents, distributors, exhibitors and other industry professionals. Through presentations, curated meetings, rough-cut screenings and networking, it can help a project find partners, refine a financing strategy and prepare for circulation—but it is not a grant and does not guarantee investment, a sales contract or distribution.

What the IDFA Forum does

The Forum runs alongside IDFA in Amsterdam as a four-day professional program. Selected teams present projects to an international market whose participants can include broadcasters, film funds, commissioning editors, sales companies, distributors, digital platforms, exhibitors, NGOs, institutes and MEDIA Desks. The purpose is practical: put a project in front of people who may help it move from an idea or rough cut toward financing, co-production, exhibition or an audience.

The market serves both conventional documentary cinema and work designed for other forms of viewing. A project may be intended for theatrical release, television, a digital platform, an installation, a headset or a live setting. The relevant Forum route depends on the project’s stage, form and immediate need.

That distinction matters. The Forum creates access and structured opportunities; it does not award a standard production grant. A meeting with a commissioner is a conversation about possible collaboration, not a promise that the commissioner will buy the project. Likewise, a selection is evidence that the project fits the Forum’s editorial and professional criteria, not evidence that financing or distribution has been secured.

Which program should a project apply for?

Route Best fit What happens Key constraints
Forum Pitch Projects in development or production seeking financing, co-production or creative partners A presentation to a larger professional audience, followed by access to curated meetings An attached producer is required; visual material is recommended
Roundtable Presentations Development or production projects that benefit from a smaller, focused discussion A moderated presentation in a more intimate session, with one-on-one meeting opportunities IDFA assigns the selected project to the format it considers appropriate
Rough Cut Presentations Late-production or post-production documentaries with substantial material assembled A rough cut is screened for festival, sales and distribution contacts For the 2026 call: at least 75% of material shot, unfinished film, file available by October 27, and a planned 2027 release or premiere
IDFA DocLab Forum Immersive, interactive and interdisciplinary documentary work Presentations and meetings aimed at creative collaboration and cross-disciplinary financing Examples include XR, interactive work, web documentaries, VR, AI, installations, multimedia journalism and live performance; conventional linear cinema or broadcast projects are generally excluded, except linear VR

Pitch and Roundtable projects are both eligible for curated one-on-one meetings. IDFA decides which presentation format fits a selected project, so an applicant should describe the project’s current stage and the specific partners or decisions it needs rather than trying to force a preferred session.

How the support works in practice

Presenting a project at the right stage

A development or production project uses a Pitch or Roundtable presentation to explain its artistic approach, narrative or experiential design, financing position and next steps. The application guidance does not impose a ceiling on how much financing is already in place. A project can therefore apply while seeking a first co-producer, a gap-financing partner, a broadcaster or a final creative collaborator.

Using curated one-on-one meetings

IDFA arranges meetings with relevant professionals rather than leaving every introduction to chance. Teams can use these conversations to test a financing plan, discuss editorial direction, ask about territorial or platform strategy and identify possible co-production structures. The value is relevance and preparation: a short meeting is more useful when the team can state what it is asking for, what is already attached and what decision must follow.

Showing a rough cut

Rough Cut Presentations are aimed at projects close enough to completion for professionals to judge the film’s form and audience potential. The 2026 requirements tied eligibility to production progress and a future release or premiere. A team entering this route needed at least three quarters of its material shot, an unfinished project, a rough-cut file ready by October 27 and a planned 2027 release or premiere. Those conditions belong to the 2026 edition; a later call may change them.

Developing immersive and interdisciplinary work

DocLab Forum is designed for projects whose creative logic extends beyond a conventional linear film. A web documentary, VR experience, interactive story, installation, AI-based work, multimedia journalism project or live performance may need collaborators from technology, design, journalism, performance or spatial practice as well as film finance. DocLab creates a setting for those conversations. A standard linear television documentary should normally use another Forum route; the guidance identifies linear VR as the relevant exception.

Who can apply?

The 2026 guidance accepted creative documentaries intended for theatrical distribution, television broadcasting or another platform. Eligible forms included one-off feature-length or television films, series, and immersive or interactive projects in development, production or post-production. Independent production companies and producers could apply internationally.

  • Shows on the go: Take your TV to-go when traveling—without needing to log into someone else’s device.
  • The applicant must hold the project’s rights or have clearance from the rights holders.
  • Short films were not eligible for the 2026 Forum call.
  • Projects had to be presented live in Amsterdam.
  • A producer had to be attached for the Pitch and Roundtable routes.
  • A project could be entered in only one Forum program.
  • Selected projects could not be withdrawn after selection.
  • Visual material such as a trailer or mood board was strongly recommended. If the spoken language was not English, the material needed English subtitles.

IDFA says it looks for a strong artistic vision and clear creative approach; a coherent narrative, visual or experiential strategy, or a distinctive artistic direction still being developed; potential for international co-production, financing or circulation; and a team able to engage with international partners and explain its next steps.

What does participation cost?

For the 2026 edition, the selected-project presentation fee was €475, or €574.75 including 21% VAT. This was a fee for participation after selection, not an application fee or a promise of financial support. IDFA said exemptions or discounts might be available when the main producer was from and living in a listed country; applicants were instructed to contact the Forum team because eligibility is location-specific.

How selective is the Forum?

IDFA Professionals reported that 47 projects were selected from 859 entries for the 2026 Forum. The final selection involved assessment by 42 external experts. IDFA Institute’s 2025 annual report recorded 51 selected projects from 841 entries and described the Forum as an international co-financing and co-production market, including a format adjustment intended to support filmmakers, particularly in early development.

Those figures show a competitive market, not a financing probability. They do not mean that an accepted project will receive a deal, and they should not be used to calculate an applicant’s personal odds. Selection means that IDFA found the project artistically and professionally relevant to that edition’s program.

“Despite the challenges of the market, both in terms of finance and distribution, we strongly believe that IDFA Forum should provide space for filmmakers who approach their craft with courage and curiosity,” said Adriek van Nieuwenhuijzen, Head of IDFA Industry, in the 2026 selection announcement. She added that IDFA champions works that “surprise, reveal, and embrace complexity” and hopes they find audiences “whether on screens, big or small, via headsets, or in immersive installations.”

How to choose the right route

  1. Identify the project stage. Use Pitch or Roundtable for development and production, Rough Cut for a substantially assembled late-stage film, and DocLab for immersive or interdisciplinary work.
  2. Define the decision you need. Be specific about whether you seek a co-producer, financing, a commissioning conversation, sales guidance, distribution, festival positioning or a creative collaborator.
  3. Check form and rights. Confirm that the project is not a short film, that the team controls the necessary rights, and that the work fits the chosen route’s format.
  4. Prepare evidence of the idea. A clear treatment and team plan should be supported by a trailer, mood board, sample scene or other visual material where appropriate. Non-English spoken material needs English subtitles.
  5. Match the timing. A Rough Cut application requires the specified production progress and delivery date; applying too early leaves professionals unable to assess the film, while applying too late may leave no realistic time for partnership decisions.
  6. Plan the meetings. Research the accredited guest profiles, rank the contacts that fit the project and prepare a concise explanation of the project, its current financing and the next action you want from each conversation.

First-time presenters selected for the Forum are encouraged by IDFA to register for its documentary pitch training. That is preparation support, not a separate financing award and not a requirement to buy a particular course or tool.

What attending as an Observer provides

The Forum is primarily a producers’ market, but an Observer can attend presentations and screenings, arrange independent meetings and take part in networking events. Directors cannot apply for an Observer pass. Independent producers with a co-production track record may request access to one-on-one meetings with projects in the Pitch and Roundtable programs. Observer access is therefore useful for learning the market and building contacts, but it is different from being a selected project team.

2026 dates and what may change

IDFA scheduled the 2026 Forum for November 15–18 in Amsterdam. The 2026 project-entry call ran from June 1 to July 23 and is closed. Those dates, the €475 fee, the Rough Cut deadlines and the eligibility details are edition-specific. No later-edition application window is established here, so prospective applicants should check the current IDFA Professionals pages for new dates, fees, program rules, attendance arrangements and any fee exemption.

The Forum should also be kept distinct from IDFA Bertha Fund grants and other filmmaker-support programs. The Forum is a market built around presentations and professional meetings; it is not itself a grant scheme.
