The “smiling man” reveal is for Emio – The Smiling Man: Famicom Detective Club, a Nintendo Switch detective adventure announced on July 17, 2024, and released on August 29, 2024. Its murder mystery draws on a chilling urban legend, but Nintendo describes the series as human drama tinged with horror—not as a confirmed survival-horror game.
What is the Emio trailer for?
The trailer promotes Emio – The Smiling Man: Famicom Detective Club, a new story in Nintendo’s Famicom Detective Club series. Nintendo announced the Switch game on July 17, 2024, with an August 29, 2024 release date. Nintendo called it the series’ first new story in 35 years; that is the company’s own framing of the gap between entries. Nintendo’s announcement gives the official premise and release details.
What is the story about?
A student is found murdered with a paper bag bearing a smiling face over their head. The scene recalls a clue associated with unsolved murders from 18 years earlier and the urban legend of Emio, the “smiling man.” The player joins Utsugi Detective Agency as an assistant private investigator, examining evidence and testimony while helping police investigate whether the killer has returned or someone is copying the old crimes.
The paper-bag image began as an idea Yoshio Sakamoto, the game’s producer and writer, had kept for years. In Nintendo’s Ask the Developer, Vol. 12, Part 2, he said he imagined a victim found dead with a paper bag over their head because he thought it would be frightening. He also said working on the Switch remakes with MAGES. helped him recognize new expressive possibilities for the series and encouraged him to write a new story.

Is Emio a horror game?
It has horror imagery and a murder-centered mystery, but the confirmed genre is detective adventure. Nintendo’s Spain product listing classifies it as an adventure, and Sakamoto described the series as “human drama tinged with horror.” The distinction matters: the reveal establishes an unsettling investigative drama, not a survival-horror format. Read Nintendo’s Ask the Developer, Vol. 12, Part 3 for Sakamoto’s description of the series’ tone and direction.
Do you need to play the earlier games first?
Emio is a new entry following Famicom Detective Club: The Missing Heir and Famicom Detective Club: The Girl Who Stands Behind, the two earlier games remade for Switch in 2021. Nintendo’s announcement presents the new story as a return to the series rather than a continuation requiring prior plot knowledge. If you want the background of the franchise, Nintendo’s Ask the Developer, Vol. 12, Part 1 discusses the original entries and their remakes.
