It was the caipirinha, Brazil’s cachaça-based cocktail. In a 2014 episode of Anthony Bourdain: Parts Unknown, Bourdain called it “this indispensable icon of Brazilian beach culture” and praised it as one of the world’s great cocktails.
What goes into a caipirinha?
The three ingredients are cachaça, lime and sugar. Ice is also part of the preparation Bourdain describes, though it is not counted in the common three-ingredient framing. Cachaça is a distilled sugarcane spirit; Bourdain called it “the magic ingredient” and described it as distilled liquor of sugarcane.
In the CNN transcript of the Brazil episode, Bourdain says the drink starts with fresh lime, which is muddled with sugar, then combined with ice and cachaça. He describes it as shaken.
What did Bourdain say about the drink?
Bourdain called the caipirinha an “indispensable icon of Brazilian beach culture.” He went on to call it “one of the world’s truly great cocktails” and “the utility beverage good for any time of day or any social occasion.” The comments appear in the 2014 episode transcript; an Explore Parts Unknown archival page also reproduces his remarks.

Did Bourdain give a recipe with measurements?
No. His remarks identify the ingredients and describe muddling and shaking, but provide no measured quantities. They do not specify a ratio of cachaça to lime or sugar, nor settle details such as sugar type, how firmly to muddle, or whether a version should be shaken or assembled in its serving glass. So the transcript supports a description of the caipirinha, not a measured recipe attributed to Bourdain.
