The couple’s separation was reported in 2006, when divorce proceedings were still ongoing, according to The Independent. Rumors about an affair circulated, but Hawke denied them; the reporting does not establish them as the cause of the divorce.
André Balazs: an on-and-off relationship
Thurman was publicly linked to hotelier André Balazs in the mid-2000s. In 2006, The Independent described the relationship as being in an “off” period. The following year, her publicist confirmed the split to the Associated Press, saying, “I confirm that they are no longer a couple.” The AP report described their relationship as on and off for three years. CBS News carried the report.
The accounts support describing Balazs as a former partner, not a husband.
Arpad Busson: partner and former fiancé
Thurman and financier Arpad Busson were together and became engaged in 2008. In an interview that year, Redbook described Thurman as being in love with him. Reuters reported that her representative confirmed the engagement; the report was republished by ABC News. The Independent also covered the announcement in its 2008 report.
