A complete, current ranking of all 12 theatrical Star Wars movies by IMDb rating cannot be verified from the available title-page scores. The figures surfaced for some films are search snapshots, not a publication-day dataset, so they do not support a trustworthy order for all 12. This guide defines which films count, explains what IMDb’s rating measures, and shows why a full ranking needs a fresh check of every title page.
Which 12 Star Wars movies count?
This list covers the released theatrical films: the nine numbered saga movies, the 2008 animated theatrical movie Star Wars: The Clone Wars, and the two standalone stories Rogue One and Solo. It does not include television series, specials, shorts, or future films. Lucasfilm’s viewing guide distinguishes the 2008 movie from the series of the same name; its film catalog lists released films separately from planned titles.
- Star Wars: A New Hope (Episode IV, 1977)
- Star Wars: The Empire Strikes Back (Episode V, 1980)
- Star Wars: Return of the Jedi (Episode VI, 1983)
- Star Wars: The Phantom Menace (Episode I, 1999)
- Star Wars: Attack of the Clones (Episode II, 2002)
- Star Wars: Revenge of the Sith (Episode III, 2005)
- Star Wars: The Clone Wars (theatrical animated movie, 2008)
- Star Wars: The Force Awakens (Episode VII, 2015)
- Rogue One: A Star Wars Story (2016)
- Star Wars: The Last Jedi (Episode VIII, 2017)
- Solo: A Star Wars Story (2018)
- Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker (Episode IX, 2019)
Why a complete current IMDb ranking needs a fresh check
IMDb’s ratings change: the displayed weighted rating is updated numerous times per day. The available observed search snapshots provide figures for only nine titles, and they are not a verified, same-time set of all 12 title-page ratings. Combining them would create a misleading ranking, while filling in the missing films from memory would not answer the question reliably.
The snapshots surfaced these examples: The Empire Strikes Back, 8.7 from 1.5 million ratings; A New Hope, 8.6 from 1.6 million; Return of the Jedi, 8.3 from 1.2 million; Rogue One, 7.8 from 766,000; Solo, 6.9 from 415,000; The Last Jedi, 6.8 from 727,000; Attack of the Clones, 6.6 from 831,000; The Phantom Menace, 6.5 from 939,000; and The Rise of Skywalker, 6.3 from 551,000. These are search-result observations from 2026, not publication-day values; they are not sufficient to order the complete set.

IMDb search results can surface member-created lists, but IMDb warns those rankings are not reviewed or verified by the company. A community list is not an official IMDb ranking. To publish a defensible descending order, check each of the 12 IMDb title pages on the same date, record each weighted rating and vote count, and state that retrieval date alongside the results.
What IMDb’s rating means
IMDb registered users can rate released titles from 1 to 10. IMDb says: “We take all the individual ratings given by IMDb registered users and use them to calculate a single rating.” The displayed result is a weighted user rating, not a simple arithmetic mean, a critic score, or an objective measure of a film’s quality. IMDb does not disclose its exact weighting calculation. See IMDb Help’s Ratings FAQ, updated February 9, 2026.

When comparing IMDb with another list, keep the measurement and its date clear. An audience rating and a critics’ aggregate answer different questions; a weighted average and a plain mean are not interchangeable. Vote counts also provide context, while a stated snapshot date makes clear when the order was observed. Avoid treating scores from different dates or methods as if they formed one consistent ranking.
