Summerween is Halloween in summer—an informal celebration inspired by the “Summerween” episode of Gravity Falls. Fans now use the idea for July parties, costumes, spooky crafts, themed treats, scary-movie nights, and jack-o’-melons: watermelons carved like jack-o’-lanterns.
It is not an official Disney holiday and has no fixed date. The trend has grown because Halloween’s visual language works well with summer settings such as pools, patios, and outdoor gatherings, while retailers increasingly put Halloween merchandise on shelves months before October.
Where Summerween came from
The name comes from Gravity Falls, the animated series about twins Dipper and Mabel Pines, who spend the summer with their great-uncle Stan. Disney+ lists “Summerween” as Season 1, Episode 12 and describes it as “Gravity Falls’ version of Halloween in summer.”
That fictional episode is the clearest origin of the term. The real-world celebration, however, is not an official Disney holiday. Fans and social-media creators have taken the idea beyond the show, turning it into an informal excuse for Halloween-themed parties, crafts, costumes, treats, and movie nights during the warmer months.

There is also no universally recognized Summerween date. Some people celebrate in late June, others in July, and many simply choose a convenient weekend for an early Halloween gathering.
Why Summerween is showing up in July
Summerween works because it combines two instantly recognizable settings: Halloween’s spooky visual style and summer’s outdoor atmosphere. A backyard, patio, campsite, or swimming pool can become the setting for an event that uses orange-and-black decorations, costumes, candy, and ghostly themes without waiting until October.
The format is particularly suited to short-form social media. Videos and posts can show a watermelon carved like a jack-o’-lantern, a themed pool party, a costume, a spooky dessert, or a table decorated for an early Halloween celebration. The result is visually distinctive but easy to recreate, which helps the idea spread as a participatory trend rather than remaining only a reference to a television episode.
Retail timing has reinforced the trend. Reporting from 2025 described Summerween-related activity involving jack-o’-melons, pineapple carvings, themed parties, crafts, costumes, treats, and scary-movie nights. Separate retail coverage in July 2026 described shoppers buying Halloween décor, candy, and costumes in midsummer, while stores were placing seasonal merchandise on shelves earlier. Michaels was reported to have launched Halloween collections in June, and Walmart created select-store “Summer Frights” sections.
Those developments are related but not identical. A store displaying Halloween merchandise in June is evidence of early seasonal retailing. A pool party with a carved watermelon is evidence of fan participation. Together, they make Summerween more visible, but they do not prove that every retailer or consumer has adopted it.

How to celebrate Summerween
1. Host a backyard or pool party
The simplest approach is to combine familiar Halloween details with a summer-friendly venue. Use a backyard, patio, picnic area, or pool rather than an indoor living room, and plan the event around daylight, warm weather, and easy outdoor food.
Useful themes include a haunted pool party, a campfire ghost-story night, a “beach cemetery,” or a casual costume picnic. Orange and black tableware, paper ghosts, skeletons, faux cobwebs, lanterns, and small signs can establish the mood without requiring a full October-style display. If decorations will be used outdoors, check the product’s specifications rather than assuming that any item is weatherproof.
For a shopping checklist, Halloween party decorations are the most natural starting category. They can cover table décor, banners, hanging ornaments, costume accessories, and other supplies, but Summerween does not require an official branded product.

2. Carve a jack-o’-melon
A jack-o’-melon is a watermelon carved in the style of a jack-o’-lantern. It is one of the clearest ways to adapt a traditionally autumn activity to summer. Pineapples have also appeared in similar creations.
Choose a stable cutting surface and use a sharp kitchen knife carefully. Children should not handle carving tools without close adult supervision. Once cut, the fruit should be treated like any other perishable food: keep it chilled and refrigerate leftovers promptly. These are ordinary food-preparation precautions, not a claim that one particular carving tool or kit is safer than another.
A watermelon can be carved with tools already available in the kitchen, although pumpkin-carving kits or dedicated watermelon-carving tools may be useful for people planning a more elaborate design. They are optional rather than essential to the tradition.
3. Serve cold, spooky-themed treats
Summerween food can be Halloween-inspired without being heavy. Consider chilled fruit arranged as “eyeballs,” orange-and-black desserts, frozen treats, popcorn, candy, themed cupcakes, or brightly colored drinks served in decorated cups. A candy table is especially easy to combine with a pool or backyard event.

There is no required menu and no particular candy brand associated with Summerween. The point is the visual and thematic connection: familiar summer refreshments presented with Halloween colors, names, or decorations. Keep cold foods cold and label ingredients when serving guests with allergies.
4. Wear costumes—or only a small spooky accessory
A full costume is optional. Some guests may prefer a Halloween shirt, witch hat, skeleton makeup, face stickers, glow accessories, or a simple orange-and-black outfit that is comfortable in warm weather. For outdoor events, plan around heat and sun exposure rather than treating October clothing as mandatory.
5. Watch the “Summerween” episode
Watching the Gravity Falls episode is the most direct way to connect a real-world celebration with the term’s origin. Disney+ identifies it as the show’s first-season, twelfth episode. Families and friends can make it the centerpiece of an evening, show it before a party, or use it as a starting point for a broader animated or horror-themed movie night.
Streaming catalogs and availability can vary by country and change over time, so check the service available in your location before planning an event around a particular title. The research confirms the Disney+ listing for the origin episode; it does not establish that every streaming service carries it.

What to buy for a Summerween gathering
Summerween is deliberately flexible, so most people can adapt supplies they already have. If you are starting from scratch, prioritize items that support the actual activities rather than searching for a supposedly official Summerween collection.
