Snapchat Spotlight is Snapchat’s public, swipeable video feed: a place where people can discover clips from creators they do not already follow. For a documentary maker, it can be useful for short scene previews, interview moments, visual facts, production diaries, or a trailer that points viewers toward a longer film—provided the video follows Snapchat’s public-content rules.
Posting to Spotlight is separate from sending a Snap to friends or adding one to a private story. A submission is reviewed before wider distribution, and choosing Spotlight does not guarantee that the video will become popular—or even appear broadly in the feed.
What Snapchat Spotlight is
Spotlight is Snapchat’s recommendation-driven video section. In the mobile app, tap the Spotlight icon at the bottom of the screen, then swipe up or down to browse. Spotlight is also available on the web.
Unlike a Snap sent only to selected contacts, a Spotlight submission is intended for public discovery. It may also appear in Snapchat Search or Stories, and Snapchat says it may be shown on or off Snapchat, either immediately or later. That wider possible distribution is also why Spotlight submissions are moderated.
#1 Best Overall
A video can be accepted as a submission without receiving significant reach. Snapchat may leave it marked as submitted, make it live but show it to relatively few viewers, or restrict its distribution to non-followers.
How to submit a video to Spotlight in the Snapchat app
- Create a video Snap in Snapchat.
- On the Send To screen, select Spotlight at the top.
- Tap the pencil icon if you want to add a description, location, or #topic.
- Tap Next.
- Tap the blue triangle button to submit the video.
Depending on the version of the app, you may reach the same workflow in other ways:
- Open My Account, tap Post to Spotlight, and then record or upload content.
- While watching Spotlight, tap the + card icon to create or upload a Spotlight Snap.
- In a supported Topic Chat, press and hold a message, tap Snap, create the video, and choose Spotlight on the left side of the preview.
How to submit from a computer
For a desktop upload, use Snapchat’s creator-profile site rather than assuming that the ordinary web viewer has the same upload controls.
- Go to profile.snapchat.com and sign in.
- Drag a video into the upload area, or click Choose video.
- Under Send to, click the checkmark beside Spotlight Snaps.
- Add any relevant #Topics.
- Read and accept the Creator Terms.
- Click Post to Snapchat.
This creator-upload route is distinct from web.snapchat.com, which Snapchat documents mainly for viewing and uploading Spotlight content through its web experience. If the creator dashboard is unavailable for your account, the mobile app is the more direct submission method.

Spotlight content must comply with Snapchat’s:
- Community Guidelines
- Spotlight Guidelines
- Terms of Service
- Spotlight Terms
Snapchat also applies a stricter standard when deciding whether to recommend a video beyond the creator’s friends or subscribers. A video can remain on Snapchat but still be excluded from broad recommendation, age-gated, limited, or declined for distribution.

A Public Profile is not listed as a requirement for submitting a Spotlight Snap. However, Snapchat says that only users with a Public Profile can have their display name associated with the Spotlight Snap.
Practical checks for documentary clips
Before submitting a film excerpt, check more than the footage itself. You should have permission to use interview audio, archival material, music, logos, and identifiable private footage. A documentary subject’s consent to appear in a film is not automatically permission to distribute every edit on a public social feed.
Do not rely on shock value, dangerous stunts, misleading captions, or unverified claims to attract views. Snapchat’s recommendation rules can exclude sexually explicit material, dangerous or illegal activity, false information, unoriginal reposts, repeated near-duplicate uploads, and low-effort reactions.

URLs or QR codes that direct viewers to other messaging, social-media, or cloud-storage services are not eligible for promotion under Snapchat’s recommendation-quality rules. A clean title card naming the film or production may be safer than a frame filled with off-platform links.
Age-related creator settings
For creators aged 16 or older, Snapchat provides settings controlling whether others can remix a Snap and whether it appears on the creator’s Public Profile.
Rank #3
| Creator age | Default setting |
|---|---|
| 16–17 | Remixing and Public Profile display are off by default. |
| 18 or older | Those options are on by default. |
Review these choices before posting a sensitive interview, unreleased scene, or material involving people who may not expect others to reuse the clip.
How to check whether the submission is live
- Open My Account.
- Tap the submitted Snap.
- Check its status.
| Status | Meaning |
|---|---|
| Submitted | The Snap has been sent for review but is not live in Spotlight. |
| Live | The Snap has been posted to Spotlight and can be shown to more Snapchatters. |
Moderation uses automated systems and human review. Consequently, a delay does not necessarily mean the upload failed. It also does not mean that a video marked Live will receive a large audience.

Start by checking whether the status says Submitted or Live. If it is still submitted, it has not yet entered the live Spotlight feed. If it is live, low reach may result from limited recommendation eligibility, weak early viewer response, or the video simply not ranking highly for the audiences Snapchat tests.
Snapchat says its ranking system can consider:
- Watch time and completion rate
- Favorites, shares, comments, and subscriptions
- Skips, hides, and reports
- Content category and metadata
- Creator information, language, country, age, device, network, and region
A “limited distribution” notice means Snapchat has restricted delivery to some or all non-followers because the Snap does not meet its recommendation standards. It is different from proving that the video was never uploaded.
For a documentary clip, the opening matters. Begin with the strongest visual, question, or line of dialogue rather than a long production logo. Add accurate context in the caption, avoid recycled footage, and make the edit understandable without assuming that viewers have seen the full film.

Is Spotlight still a way to earn money?
Be careful with older advice about the Spotlight Rewards Program. That program ended on January 31, 2025; an ordinary submission is not automatically eligible for a share of the former daily Spotlight fund.
Snapchat’s current unified Monetization Program is invitation-based and has additional requirements. Snapchat lists conditions including at least 50,000 followers, 15,000 hours of view time during the previous 28 days, at least 3,000 Spotlight hours, the required age, residence in an eligible country, Snap Star status, and original, advertiser-friendly content.
Those are monetization conditions, not requirements for uploading a normal Spotlight video. Snapchat also lists a future condition beginning May 7, 2026: creators must maintain at least 100 hours of total Spotlight view time over the preceding 28 days to qualify for maximum Creator Rewards. That does not prevent an ordinary creator from submitting a Snap.

Snapchat’s current public instructions for ordinary mobile Spotlight submissions do not state one universal minimum duration, maximum duration, resolution, or aspect ratio. Do not confuse figures found in other Snapchat help pages with Spotlight requirements.
For example, Snapchat documents a 5-to-60-second length and minimum 540×960 resolution for web uploads to My Story, not explicitly for ordinary Spotlight submissions. The often-repeated 30-second figure is tied to monetization eligibility for certain Spotlight videos, not a general rule that every Spotlight upload must meet.

In practice, a vertical video that is clear on a phone is the sensible format for documentary promotion. But the absence of a published universal specification is not a promise that every file will be accepted; app and account features can change, and Snapchat may apply technical checks during upload.
FAQ
Can anyone submit a video to Snapchat Spotlight?
Snapchat’s current submission guidance does not state that a Public Profile is required to submit a Snap. The video must comply with Snapchat’s Community Guidelines, Spotlight Guidelines, Terms of Service, and Spotlight Terms. A Public Profile is needed for the creator’s display name to be associated with the Spotlight Snap.
How long does Spotlight moderation take?
Snapchat does not provide one universal review time in its submission instructions. Check the Snap under My Account: Submitted means it is not live, while Live means it has been posted to Spotlight and can be shown to more Snapchatters.
Why is my Spotlight video live but receiving no views?
Live status does not guarantee broad distribution. Snapchat may limit recommendation eligibility, or the video may rank poorly based on signals such as watch time, completions, skips, hides, reports, shares, and audience or regional factors.
Can I make money from any Spotlight submission?
No. The former Spotlight Rewards Program ended on January 31, 2025. Current monetization is handled through Snapchat’s invitation-based Monetization Program, which has substantial eligibility requirements and is separate from the ability to submit a normal Spotlight video.
The Bottom Line
To submit a Spotlight video, create a video Snap, choose Spotlight on the Send To screen, edit its description or topic if needed, tap Next, and press the blue triangle. Desktop creators can use profile.snapchat.com. After uploading, check whether the Snap is Submitted or Live. For documentary work, clear rights, accurate context, original editing, and a strong opening are more useful than chasing outdated claims about guaranteed reach or automatic rewards.
