What is Sky Q? Sky’s former flagship TV service explained (2026)

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Sky Q is Sky UK’s satellite-delivered pay-TV platform built around a networked set-top box. Its main box receives live channels from a dish, stores recordings on a hard drive and connects to broadband for downloads, apps and software updates. Sky Q Mini boxes can extend the service to other televisions.

It remains a capable, recording-focused system for existing customers. However, Sky had stopped offering Sky Q for online purchase to new customers by 12 December 2025, while increasingly directing new viewers to Sky Stream and Sky Glass. Availability can vary by region and sales channel, so confirm the current position with Sky.

What is Sky Q in simple terms?

“Sky Q” describes a complete television platform rather than one device. It includes:

  • The main Sky Q box: receives satellite channels and normally contains the recording hard drive.
  • Sky Q Mini boxes: additional receivers for other rooms, sharing the main box’s service and recordings.
  • The Sky Q interface: programme guide, recordings, downloads, catch-up, apps, search and voice control.
  • A Sky TV subscription: the channels and services depend on the package and add-ons selected.

Sky Q is not simply a streaming service. Its defining architecture is satellite television combined with a local digital video recorder (DVR), although broadband supplies on-demand downloads, apps and other connected functions. Sky’s current help hub documents the supported system and its features at Sky Q help.

Sky Go is the companion service for compatible phones, tablets and computers. Sky Stream and Sky Glass are newer broadband-delivered platforms: Stream uses a separate puck with an existing television, while Glass builds Sky into a Sky-branded television.

How Sky Q works

The basic route is:

Satellite dish → main Sky Q box → television, recordings and Mini boxes

Live television

A dish connected to the main box receives live satellite channels. This does not require broadband, provided the dish, cabling and box are working.

Recordings

The main box stores recordings on its internal hard drive. Recordings are available from the main television and, through the home network, on compatible Mini boxes.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

On-demand and apps

Catch-up programmes, box sets and films are downloaded over broadband. Apps and some interactive services also require an internet connection. Downloads can be queued and watched when ready rather than viewed as a live satellite broadcast.

Where broadband fits

Broadband is needed for on-demand downloads, apps, software updates and network communication with Mini boxes. Consequently, Sky Q can continue showing ordinary live satellite television during an internet outage, but it is not independent of broadband for its connected features.

What can you watch and do on Sky Q?

  • Watch live satellite channels, including entertainment, sport, cinema and children’s services where your subscription includes them.
  • Pause, rewind and resume live television.
  • Record one-off programmes or entire series with Series Link.
  • Download catch-up, box sets, films and other on-demand programmes.
  • Search by programme, actor, film, sporting event or channel.
  • Use voice commands such as “Pause”, “Watch from Start”, “Next episode”, “Open YouTube” and “Continue watching [programme]”. See Sky’s voice-control guide.
  • Use supported apps including Netflix, YouTube and Spotify. App availability can change by model and software version.
  • Watch selected UHD and HDR programmes with the appropriate box, television, subscription and content.
  • Use Sky Go on supported devices, subject to package and device limits.

The home screen brings recordings, downloads, live TV, catch-up and apps together. Its traditional channel guide suits viewers who prefer scheduled television, while the mini guide lets you browse other channels and set recordings without fully leaving the current programme. Sky explains that behaviour in its mini-guide instructions.

Recording, pausing and downloading

Recording a programme

  1. Open the TV Guide.
  2. Highlight the programme.
  3. Press the Record button.
  4. For a series, Sky Q offers a series-recording option. Press Record again if you want only the individual episode.
  5. Press Sky on the remote and scroll to Recordings to find it.

Series Link automatically records future episodes when listings and rights permit. You can usually resume a recording where you stopped, and compatible programmes can be watched from the beginning while recording.

Recording limits depend on the box

Sky Q box Official capability
1TB box Record three programmes while watching another.
1TB UHD box Up to six recordings while watching live TV; five are enabled by default.
2TB UHD box Up to six recordings while watching live TV; five are enabled by default.

On 1TB UHD and 2TB boxes, change the maximum through Settings → Setup → Preferences → Maximum number of recordings → 6, then restart. Sky’s recording guide gives the current procedure. Do not assume that an ordinary 1TB box has the capabilities of the 1TB UHD model.

Downloading on-demand programmes

  1. Press Home.
  2. Select Catch Up TV, Sky Cinema, Sky Box Sets, Sports, Kids, Music or another category.
  3. Select a programme or film.
  4. It is added to the download queue.
  5. Watch it when the download is ready.

Set the default quality at Home → Settings → Setup → Preferences → On Demand default download format, choosing SD, HD or UHD where the programme offers that format. The setting is described in Sky’s downloading guide.

Sky Q Mini boxes and multiroom

A Sky Q Mini box is an additional receiver for another television. It connects to the main Sky Q system over the home network and accesses the main service, including shared recordings and live channels. It is not an independent Sky Q recording hub with its own satellite feed and separate library.

Network quality matters: weak Wi-Fi, congestion or an incompatible mesh arrangement can cause freezing even when the dish signal is strong. A Sky Q Booster may improve coverage, but it cannot repair a misaligned dish or faulty broadband line.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Sky’s 2TB technical specification says that box can support simultaneous viewing on two Sky Q Mini boxes alongside the main box’s capabilities. Exact limits depend on hardware, subscription and concurrent use. Mini boxes should not be treated as a route to UHD; check the specific equipment and package.

Sky Q, UHD and HDR

UHD (often called 4K) and HDR are optional, model-specific features. Sky’s UHD/HDR setup requirements include:

  • A Sky Q 2TB UHD box or Sky Q 1TB UHD box.
  • The relevant HD and Ultra HD add-ons or Sky Q Experience pack.
  • A compatible UHD television supporting 3840 × 2160 pixels at 50 frames per second and HDCP 2.2.
  • The supplied compatible HDMI cable.
  • UHD or HDR availability for the particular programme.

A standard 1TB box is not the same as a 1TB UHD box, and a 4K television alone does not upgrade Sky Q. Mini boxes are not the dependable way to deliver UHD.

The 2TB UHD specification lists a 2TB physical drive, approximately 1.7TB available to the customer, UHD output and five simultaneous recordings while watching a sixth by default, with an option to raise the recording limit to six: Sky Q 2TB specification.

Does Sky Q need a dish and broadband?

Requirement What it is used for
Satellite dish Core live satellite channels and satellite-delivered recordings.
Broadband On-demand downloads, apps, updates, interactive functions and communication with Mini boxes.
Home network Sharing service between the main box and Mini boxes.

Bad weather, obstructions, cabling faults or dish misalignment can interrupt satellite channels while broadband features continue. Conversely, a broadband failure can stop downloads and Mini-box communication without necessarily stopping live satellite TV.

What does a Sky Q subscription include?

There is no single universal Sky Q bundle. Your service depends on the base package and selected extras, including:

  • HD and Ultra HD.
  • Sky Q Experience or Multiscreen.
  • Sky Sports and Sky Cinema.
  • Kids programming.
  • Broadband.
  • Eligibility for third-party streaming services and bundles.

On 11 February 2026, Sky announced that eligible customers on packages such as Sky Signature and Sky Entertainment would receive Disney+ Standard with Ads, HBO Max Basic With Ads and Hayu content as part of a wider bundled-content change. Eligibility and package names are commercial details that can change; check the current offer directly with Sky: Sky’s announcement.

Is Sky Q still available in 2026?

Sky Q remains supported for existing customers, but Sky Community support confirmed on 12 December 2025 that it was no longer purchasable online for new customers. Sky’s corporate product information increasingly presents Stream and Glass as current ways to watch Sky, while independent coverage described the change as part of a move away from satellite sales to new customers.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

This does not mean that Sky Q has stopped working, that satellite broadcasts have ended or that every customer must migrate by a set date. Availability may differ by region, customer history and sales channel. New customers should check Sky directly rather than assume a Q installation is available.

Who should choose or keep Sky Q?

Sky Q is a strong fit for

  • Existing customers with a working dish and compatible equipment.
  • Families that record several live programmes at once.
  • Sports viewers who want scheduled channels and local recordings.
  • Households wanting recordings in multiple rooms.
  • Homes with unreliable or capped broadband but usable satellite reception.
  • Viewers who prefer a conventional EPG and Series Link.

Look elsewhere if you

  • Are starting from scratch and want the simplest current Sky installation.
  • Cannot install or use a satellite dish.
  • Move frequently or want a portable, streaming-first service.
  • Have strong broadband but no need for local DVR recordings.
  • Want to avoid installation appointments, equipment returns or a long contract.
  • Already own a premium television and do not want Sky hardware tied to the subscription.

Sky Q compared with NOW and free-to-air alternatives

NOW may suit viewers who want selected Sky entertainment, cinema or sport with a more flexible commitment and no satellite box. The trade-off is a less integrated traditional-TV experience and fewer DVR-style, whole-home functions.

Viewers mainly watching BBC, ITV, Channel 4 and Channel 5 can consider a Freeview-compatible recorder, Freesat hardware or individual streaming apps. These options can reduce recurring costs but generally do not provide Sky’s premium channels, sports, cinema, unified guide and Sky-specific catalogue. Official starting points are NOW, Freeview and Freesat.

Common problems and important checks

Satellite failure

Check weather, obstructions, dish alignment and cabling. Online apps may still work if broadband is available.

Mini-box freezing

Investigate Wi-Fi coverage, network congestion and mesh compatibility. A strong dish signal does not guarantee a reliable home network.

UHD not appearing

Confirm that the box is a 1TB UHD or 2TB UHD model, the HD/UHD entitlement is active, the programme is offered in UHD and the television, HDMI cable and HDCP 2.2 connection meet Sky’s requirements.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Moving home

A Sky Q installation depends on the new property’s dish position, cabling and suitability. You may need an engineer visit or a change to a streaming product; the box cannot necessarily be unplugged and used anywhere.

Switching or cancelling

Sky Q equipment is generally loaned and may need to be returned when the relevant subscription ends. Check cancellation charges, contract terms and return instructions in the Sky Q terms and conditions. Switching can also mean losing locally stored recordings.

Accessibility and software differences

Ofcom’s 2024 electronic-programme-guide accessibility research reports voice guidance support on Sky Q boxes in the UK and Ireland. Sky Glass and Sky Stream use different EPG technology, so accessibility behaviour should not be assumed to match Q: Ofcom report.

Sky supports several Q hardware versions and software builds. Menus and capabilities can therefore vary; check the named box model and current software information in Sky’s software and box-version guide. The remote provides live-TV controls, search, recording, voice control, guide navigation, subtitles and audio-description controls: Sky remote guide.

  • Shared recordings and service across multiple rooms.
  • Live satellite television can continue during a broadband outage.
  • UHD and HDR on suitable hardware, content and packages.
  • Centralised search, guide, voice control and supported apps.

  • Recording limits and UHD support vary materially by box model.
  • Packages, add-ons and eligibility can be complicated and change over time.
  • Sky Q is no longer the straightforward new-customer route it once was.
  • Moving to Stream or Glass may leave locally stored recordings behind.
