Sky Q is Sky UK’s satellite-based TV service, combining live channels, recordings, on-demand programmes and optional multi-room viewing through Sky Q Mini boxes. But the way to buy it has changed: Sky no longer offers Sky Q through its normal online sales journey and instead promotes Sky Stream. If you specifically need satellite-based Sky Q, you must contact Sky or ask at a Sky retail store for availability and a current quote.
Sky Q is Sky UK’s satellite-based TV service. It uses a Sky Q set-top box connected to a satellite dish, combines live channels with recordings and on-demand programmes, and can be expanded with Sky Q Mini boxes for other rooms. Broadband is still used for connected features and downloaded on-demand content, but Sky Q does not depend on broadband in the same way as Sky Stream.
The important buying change is that Sky Q is no longer available through Sky’s normal online sales journey. Sky currently directs online shoppers towards Sky Stream. If you specifically want satellite-based Sky Q, the practical route is to contact Sky using the telephone details shown on its current Sky Q page or ask at a Sky retail store. Sky Q remains supported for existing customers, and a Sky community moderator confirmed on 12 December 2025 that it could still be ordered by telephone or through retail stores.

- Live television received through a satellite dish

- On-demand programmes downloaded using broadband
- Connected television features and apps
- Playback on additional televisions using Sky Q Mini boxes
- A viewing card and paired Sky Q remote control
The main box connects to the television by HDMI and normally uses satellite cable connections for TV reception. Sky’s equipment documentation identifies a Sky Q 2TB model with a 2TB hard drive, satellite inputs, HDMI, Ethernet, Wi-Fi and Bluetooth. Exact hardware, storage and features can vary according to the box generation and subscription.
Sky Q is therefore different from a purely internet-based television service. A broadband connection is useful—and required for some features—but the core live-TV reception comes from the satellite system.
Is Sky Q still available?
Not through the standard online checkout, but it may still be available by telephone or through a Sky retail store.
Sky’s current Sky Q page says that Sky Q is no longer available to buy online and promotes Sky Stream instead. It also tells customers who believe Sky Q is the right option to call Sky. The exact availability can depend on your address, existing equipment, satellite infrastructure and the package Sky is willing to offer.

How much does Sky Q cost?
There is no single current Sky Q price published on Sky’s current online landing page. The exact monthly cost, setup charge and minimum term should be treated as quote-dependent and confirmed directly with Sky before you agree to anything.
Ask for the complete price, not just the advertised monthly subscription. Confirm all of the following:
- The monthly price for the exact TV package
- Whether the price is promotional or the standard price
- The minimum contract term
- Any installation, setup or service charge
- Whether a Sky Q box is included, rented or supplied under another equipment arrangement
- The cost of additional Sky Q Mini boxes or multi-room viewing
- Any price increase terms during or after the minimum term
- The cancellation terms and any early termination charge
- Whether your address is eligible for the requested installation
Do not confuse Sky Q prices with Sky Stream prices
Sky’s current public streaming prices are useful only as context, not as a price list for Sky Q. On the cited current pricing pages:
| Service | Advertised price | Term or condition |
|---|---|---|
| Sky Essential TV | From £15 per month | New customers on a 24-month minimum term |
| Sky Essential TV | £18 per month | 31-day rolling subscription; the stated standard rolling price is £21 per month |
| Sky Ultimate TV | From £24 per month | New customers on a 24-month minimum term |
| Sky Ultimate TV | £30 per month | 31-day rolling subscription; the stated standard rolling price is £38 per month |
Those are Sky streaming-TV prices. They should not be presented as the current cost of Sky Q, which may involve different package pricing, equipment conditions, installation charges and eligibility rules.
How can I get Sky Q?
- Start with Sky’s current Sky Q page. Use the telephone number shown there, or ask at a Sky retail store. Do not rely on an old online Sky Q order button.
- Specify the product. Say that you want satellite-based Sky Q, not Sky Stream or Sky Glass.
- Describe your property. Explain whether you already have a Sky dish, a communal satellite system, or no satellite installation at all.
- Ask for a written or clearly itemised quote. It should cover the package, monthly price, minimum term, installation and equipment.
- Check the installation requirements. A new dish, replacement cabling, access equipment or communal-system configuration could affect what is possible and what you pay.
- Read the cancellation terms before accepting. In particular, check the minimum term and what happens if installation cannot go ahead.
Do not buy a generic satellite dish and assume it will make a home Sky Q-ready. The correct dish, LNB, cabling and communal-system arrangement are property-specific. Sky should confirm the installation route.

What equipment does Sky Q need?
A typical installation includes:
- A main Sky Q set-top box
- One or more satellite cables connected to a dish or communal satellite system
- A Sky viewing card, where applicable
- An HDMI cable from the box to the television
- A Sky Q remote control
- A broadband connection for on-demand downloads and connected features
- Optional Sky Q Mini boxes for additional rooms
Homes in flats or buildings with a communal satellite system may require a Single Cable Router configuration. That is one reason an installation should not be planned solely from a generic equipment list. The box generation, satellite wiring and building infrastructure all matter.
Replacing a Sky Q remote
If you already own Sky Q and the remote has been lost, damaged or stopped responding, a Sky Q remote control can be a sensible replacement accessory. Check compatibility carefully before buying: listings can differ by Sky Q box generation, voice functionality and seller, and a third-party remote is not necessarily Sky-authorised.

If the remote is only partly working, try replacing its batteries and pairing it again before ordering a replacement. An HDMI cable is another possible setup accessory, but it is a generic connection lead rather than a Sky Q-specific product.
Sky Q versus Sky Stream
| Sky Q | Sky Stream | |
|---|---|---|
| Delivery | Live TV primarily received through a satellite dish | TV delivered over broadband through a streaming puck |
| Dish | Normally required, unless using an appropriate existing or communal satellite setup | Not required in the standard setup |
| Installation | May require a survey, dish, cabling or communal-system work | Designed as a more plug-and-play broadband setup |
| Recording | Uses the Sky Q box’s storage for recordings | Not the same recording experience as Sky Q |
| Additional rooms | Can use Sky Q Mini boxes | Uses the streaming-service equipment and arrangement offered by Sky |
| Online availability | No longer offered through Sky’s normal online buying journey | Currently promoted to online shoppers |
Sky Stream may be the better choice if you want a simple installation, do not want a dish, or have reliable broadband. Sky says Sky Q may suit you better if your internet connection is unreliable, below its suggested minimum speed, heavily used by other devices, or affected by the construction and layout of your home.
The services are not interchangeable in every respect. Sky states that when an existing Sky Q customer moves to Sky Glass or Sky Stream, the Sky Q equipment must be returned and recordings do not transfer to the streaming service. If your existing recordings and satellite-based setup matter, confirm the consequences before switching.

Who should choose Sky Q?
Sky Q is most worth investigating if:
- You specifically prefer satellite reception over broadband-only TV
- Your broadband is unreliable or routinely congested
- You already have a suitable Sky dish or communal satellite installation
- You want a traditional set-top-box recording experience
- You need television in more than one room through Sky Q Mini boxes
- You want to retain access to recordings on an existing Sky Q setup
Sky Stream is likely the more straightforward option if you have strong broadband, want to avoid a dish or installation visit, and are happy with an internet-delivered service. It is not, however, a like-for-like replacement for Sky Q’s satellite reception and local recording features.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteIs Sky Q still supported?
Yes. Sky continues to publish Sky Q setup, troubleshooting and software information, including current software versions and instructions for identifying the hardware version. That indicates ongoing support for existing Sky Q equipment even though Sky has reduced the prominence of Sky Q for new online sales.
Support for existing equipment does not guarantee that every new customer can obtain every Sky Q box or package. New availability, installation and pricing should be confirmed with Sky for the individual address.
Sky Q buying checklist
- Have you confirmed that the offer is Sky Q rather than Sky Stream?
- Does the property have a working dish or communal satellite system?
- Will Sky need to install or modify the dish, LNB or cabling?
- Is the quoted monthly cost for the full package you want?
- What is the minimum term?
- Is there an installation or setup fee?
- What equipment is supplied, and what must be returned if you cancel?
- Are Sky Q Mini boxes available and how much do they cost?
- What happens to recordings if you later move to Sky Stream or Sky Glass?
- Are the cancellation and early termination terms clear?
Bottom line
Sky Q is Sky’s satellite-based television service, combining live TV, box-based recording, on-demand content and optional multi-room viewing. It remains a sensible option for households that prefer satellite reception or cannot rely on broadband alone.
However, Sky Q is no longer sold through Sky’s ordinary online checkout. Sky Stream is the product currently promoted online, with public streaming prices starting from £15 per month on the cited page. If you want Sky Q, contact Sky or visit a Sky retail store, state that satellite-based Sky Q is required, and obtain a complete quote covering price, installation, equipment, eligibility and cancellation terms.
