It is the Christian observance of the final days of Jesus’ life—his Passion and death—and his Resurrection at Easter. In the Catholic liturgical calendar, it is a central week of worship and remembrance.
What does Semana Santa mean?
The Spanish Episcopal Conference describes Semana Santa as the center of the Christian liturgical calendar: a time to commemorate and relive the Passion, death and Resurrection of Christ, together called the Paschal Mystery. Easter Sunday is the week’s culmination.
The observance is religious, but its public expression can also become a cultural tradition. Customs differ from place to place, so practices associated with one country should not be treated as universal. The Spanish Episcopal Conference’s explanation of Semana Santa sets out its Christian meaning.
When is Semana Santa?
Its dates change each year because they follow the Easter calendar. In 2026, the Vatican’s schedule places the principal days as follows:

How is Semana Santa observed in Guatemala?
Guatemala offers one example of how Holy Week can join religious practice with local cultural heritage. The country’s Ministry of Culture and Sports describes processions, vigils, funeral marches, seasonal food, flower carpets and altars. These are Guatemalan traditions, not a definition of how Semana Santa is celebrated everywhere.
A tradition shaped over time
The Guatemalan government traces the tradition to 16th-century Santiago de Guatemala, now Antigua Guatemala. After earthquakes in 1773 and the capital’s move to the Valley of the Hermitage in 1776, Holy Week practices continued in both Antigua and the new capital.
UNESCO recognition
Guatemala’s Ministry of Culture and Sports reports that UNESCO inscribed the country’s Semana Santa on its Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity in 2022. The ministry describes the tradition’s cultural roots as combining pre-Hispanic Maya traditions and Spanish Catholicism. Guatemala designated it national intangible cultural heritage in 2008 under Ministerial Agreement 560-2008. The ministry’s account provides further detail on the history and cultural recognition of Semana Santa in Guatemala.
