The Odyssey is Christopher Nolan’s 2026 adaptation of Homer’s ancient epic about Odysseus’s long journey home after the Trojan War. The film opened in theaters on July 17, 2026, and is presented as the first feature shot entirely with IMAX film cameras. It draws on the poem and other ancient works, but Nolan’s version is an adaptation rather than a literal screen transcription.
What is Christopher Nolan’s The Odyssey about?
Homer’s Odyssey follows Odysseus as he tries to return home after the Trojan War. Project Gutenberg’s catalog describes the poem’s return journey as lasting ten years; the catalog entry is for Samuel Butler’s English prose translation. Nolan’s film takes that foundational adventure as its central source. Universal describes the movie as a “mythic action epic” that brings Homer’s saga to IMAX film screens. Project Gutenberg’s record of Butler’s translation is one accessible way to encounter the source text.
Nolan has called the story “the ultimate adventure story.” In an interview published by NBCUniversal, he also described it as “the story.” Those remarks express his view of the epic’s enduring reach, not a promise that the movie reproduces every episode or detail of the poem.
Is The Odyssey based on Homer’s poem?
Yes. Homer’s epic is the core source, but Nolan’s film makes its own adaptation choices. The Associated Press reported that Nolan drew on Greek mythology, Bronze Age scholarship and multiple translations while developing the movie. AP also reported that the film blends material from The Iliad, Virgil’s Aeneid and Aeschylus’s Agamemnon, alongside the Odyssey tradition.

That approach matters if you are comparing the film with the poem: reported choices include colloquial dialogue and American accents. Those are decisions for Nolan’s adaptation, not features to attribute to Homer’s text. The source material itself has also been translated in different ways; Butler’s version, for example, is prose, not a definitive template for the film.

Why is the film’s IMAX format notable?
The Odyssey is presented as the first feature shot entirely with IMAX film cameras. Universal described it as bringing Homer’s story to IMAX film screens for the first time; in an August 10, 2026 release, IMAX Corporation called it the first theatrical release shot entirely with IMAX Film Cameras.
That production claim is different from the format shown at a particular theater. It does not mean every IMAX location projects the film on 70mm film. Check current local listings for the presentation available near you, since formats and showtimes vary by venue and can change.

How was The Odyssey made?
The Associated Press reported that filming lasted 91 days over six months and took place in six countries. AP also reported a months-long scouting expedition and Nolan’s study of mythology, Bronze Age scholarship and multiple translations. These are reported production details, rather than a claim that the film recreates the ancient world in a single historically settled way.
The film opened theatrically on July 17, 2026, according to Universal Pictures. As of October 8, 2026, Universal Pictures Canada labels the film “NOW PLAYING”; actual availability depends on local theaters and schedules.

Where can you read Homer’s Odyssey?
Project Gutenberg catalogs Samuel Butler’s English prose translation and provides it free in the US public domain. That is a documented option for readers who want to explore the source, not evidence that Nolan used Butler’s translation. Other editions may differ in translation style, verse or prose, notes and readability, so choose according to whether you want a modern, annotated or more literary reading experience.
