Smurf Cat is a blue, elf-like character with a mushroom-shaped head and a cat’s face, usually shown walking through a forest with a snail hanging from a stick. It spread through TikTok slideshows and video edits in August and September 2023, often with the sound “We live. We love. We lie.” That line is a lyric from Alan Walker’s 2017 song “The Spectre.” The character image is older than the meme by more than a decade, and the name is a playful invention rather than a real word.
What Smurf Cat is and isn’t
Smurf Cat is a character image, not a real animal and not an official member of the Smurfs franchise. It is also known as Blue Mushroom Cat, and in Russian-letter form as “Шайлушай” (Shailushai). Its look is deliberately odd: a small blue body, a mushroom cap for a head, and a cat’s face, placed in a woodland scene. That combination is what made it easy to remix.
Where the image came from
Keep two origin stories separate. The picture predates the meme by about twelve years.
- 2011: the artist Nate Hallinan created the piece called “Smurf Sighting.”
- 2014: Hallinan published the concept-art piece to his website, according to Know Your Meme.
- August 2023: the viral meme began, using cropped and color-altered versions of that artwork.
The meme, in other words, took an existing illustration and repurposed it. The meme’s own timeline is a separate matter, covered below.

How the meme spread in 2023
Know Your Meme’s entry on Smurf Cat traces the early TikTok posts. The engagement figures below are historical counts the encyclopedia reported at the time. They were not independently verified by a platform audit, and they are not current view counts.
| Date (2023) | What was posted | Reported plays | Reported likes | Reported period |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| August 26 | Slideshow by the TikTok account @ghojam1 using cropped, color-altered versions of Hallinan’s art | About 907,200 | About 155,500 | Five days |
| August 27 | Slideshow using a remix of “The Spectre” and calling the creature “шайлушай” | About 2.1 million | About 306,500 | Four days |
| September 7 | Video edit pairing the character with the “We live. We love. We lie.” audio | About 3.3 million | About 426,000 | Six days |
The August 27 post is the turning point. It attached the song’s lyric to the character and gave the creature the name readers still see. Know Your Meme published a secondary explainer on September 19, 2023, which describes the same audio association.

The “We live. We love. We lie.” line
The phrase is the lyric from “The Spectre,” a 2017 track by Alan Walker. Within the meme, the lyric works as a brief lead-in that sets up the song’s beat drop, so the audio itself carries much of the joke’s timing. Know Your Meme notes that the song had already been used in Roblox story videos and in earlier TikTok formats before it became linked to Smurf Cat.
That history matters because it shows the audio was not invented for the character. The character borrowed a sound that already had a life online.

What “Шайлушай” means
Do not translate “Шайлушай” as if it were a standard Russian word. Know Your Meme describes it as gibberish that resembles the Russian word “шалопай,” which is glossed as “little scoundrel” or “scamp.” The name is best understood as playful nonsense with a sound that suggests a real word. It is not a literal label for the character, and it is not a phrase with a fixed dictionary meaning.
Related characters and the remix format
By September 2023, the same template had spread to related food-animal characters, including Strawberry Elephant, Pineapple Owl, and Blueberry Cat. Some videos placed these characters in “powerscaling”-style edits, which compare fictional figures by how strong or powerful they appear to be. The result was a small family of surreal creatures sharing one sound and one visual logic, rather than a single image.

Describing Smurf Cat as absurdist, surreal, or deliberately nonsensical is a fair description of its style. Claiming that it stands for a particular idea, or that its name has an authoritative literal meaning, goes beyond what the evidence supports.
