Seiko released the film on October 23, 2024, with appearances by four cultural figures and Seiko Group Chairman and CEO Shinji Hattori.
What is Seiko’s The Gift of Time documentary about?
Seiko presents the film as an exploration of how time is understood and experienced in Japanese culture. Its themes include attention to the present, the natural environment, the changing seasons and the passage of years. The framing reflects Seiko’s stated project purpose; it is not an independent assessment of Japanese culture as a whole.
That distinction matters: THE GIFT OF TIME is a branded cultural documentary project produced for Seiko, rather than an independently produced observational documentary. Seiko’s Chairman and CEO, Shinji Hattori, described its intended connection to the company’s cultural heritage and future contributions.

The film brings together people from architecture, visual art, music and public cultural leadership, alongside Seiko’s chairman.

Seiko credits Paula Chowles as director and Godfrey Dadich Partners as producer. The film’s six named locations are Daitoku-ji Temple’s Zuiho-in Monastery, Murin-an Garden, Todai-ji Temple, Enoura Observatory, The Seiko Museum Ginza and Zuisho-ji Temple. Seiko’s project page lists the participants, credits and locations.
Release and project context
Seiko’s 2024 Value Report says the project launched in July 2024 with the aim of communicating Japanese luxury internationally. Seiko also describes reopening the basement floor of the Wako Main Store in SEIKO HOUSE as Arts and Culture that July, followed by a world premiere for the completed film in October. The public release date was October 23, 2024.

The project continued through screenings and related cultural events. Seiko reported a screening at a GS9 Club event in New York on November 29, 2024, and published a report on the world premiere on March 21, 2025. It also said the film screened at Salon du Japon à Paris from January 23–25, 2026; that event included a tea house designed by Kuma and connected to the idea of ichigo ichie, or “once in a lifetime.” The company’s 2024 Value Report, project page and event coverage describe these milestones.
From film to public cultural programming
Seiko’s later activities extend the film’s themes into exhibitions and event design. In a page dated October 6, 2026, Seiko described A MOMENT OF MA, a New York exhibition inspired by the film and the Japanese concept of ma. Kuma’s associated tea-house design treats the tea house as a space for sensing time’s flow. These are extensions of Seiko’s project, not additional sections or versions of the documentary.
