Established by the Native American Heritage Day Act of 2009, it recognizes American Indian and Alaska Native heritage. It is separate from National American Indian Heritage Month, observed throughout November.
When is Native American Heritage Day?
Federal law designates the Friday immediately after Thanksgiving as Native American Heritage Day. Because Thanksgiving falls on a different calendar date each year, the heritage day does too. The designation comes from the Native American Heritage Day Act of 2009, enacted as Public Law 111-33. The Congressional Research Service summarizes the law and its history.
How is it different from Native American Heritage Month?
November’s National American Indian Heritage Month is a separate, month-long observance. Congress designated November as the month in 1990; the federal heritage day followed in 2009. They are related efforts to recognize Native heritage, but they have different names, durations, and legal milestones.
Why does Native American Heritage Day matter?
The Bureau of Indian Affairs describes the broader heritage effort as honoring the contributions, achievements, sacrifices, and cultural and historical legacy of American Indian and Alaska Native people. The day can also be an occasion to learn about Native nations connected to your community, seek out Native-authored work and tribal institutions, and recognize Native peoples as contemporary communities—not only as subjects of the past. These are practical ways to engage; no single activity or perspective represents every Native nation or person.

What is its history?
National recognition developed over many decades. The Bureau of Indian Affairs traces early efforts to advocates in the early twentieth century, followed by federal observances that took the form of days, weeks, and months. The Congressional Research Service records November’s designation as National American Indian Heritage Month in 1990 and the establishment of Native American Heritage Day in 2009. The Library of Congress guide collects historical and cultural resources related to this history.
How does the day relate to Thanksgiving?
Its placement on the Friday after Thanksgiving puts the observance next to a holiday whose familiar origin stories often leave out Native perspectives. The National Archives notes that popular accounts of the First Thanksgiving commonly emphasize a peaceful exchange while omitting Native perspectives. It describes Wampanoag leaders’ alliance with the English colonists as strategic, with leaders wary of the English. That context helps explain why a fuller telling matters, but it should not be treated as a single view shared by all Native people or as proof that all Native communities understand the heritage day’s timing in the same way. See the National Archives account of Thanksgiving history.

How does it differ from state or local observances?
Native American Heritage Day is the federal designation for the Friday after Thanksgiving. State and local governments may use other names, choose other dates, or establish their own observances. Native American Day and Indigenous Peoples Day, for example, are not automatically the same designation as the federal heritage day. There is no single state-by-state calendar established by the sources cited here, so check the relevant government’s website for local dates, events, or holiday status. The Bureau of Indian Affairs overview provides further context on federal and state observances.
