MUBI is a subscription-based film service built around curation. Instead of trying to offer the largest possible library, it presents a changing selection of independent, international, classic, documentary, experimental, and auteur-driven films. MUBI is also a wider film company involved in production, distribution, cinema exhibition, and publishing.
In short: MUBI means curated streaming, MUBI GO cinema tickets, and Notebook film culture. It is best suited to viewers who want help discovering ambitious cinema—not people looking primarily for blockbuster franchises or a large television catalogue.

What films are on MUBI?
MUBI’s selection typically includes:
- Independent and international films
- Contemporary work by established directors and emerging filmmakers
- Festival-oriented and auteur cinema
- Documentaries and documentary features
- Classic films and historically important works
- Experimental films and shorts
- Selected new releases, acquisitions, and MUBI-distributed films
The catalogue is not exclusively foreign, old, or conventionally “arthouse.” Its defining characteristic is the editorial choice behind the selection. MUBI is offering a point of view about what deserves attention, rather than an inventory designed to satisfy every possible mainstream search.
For documentary viewers, that can make MUBI especially useful. Its film-centred identity gives documentaries a place alongside fiction, shorts, classics, and formally adventurous work. However, availability is not permanent: films can leave when licensing agreements expire, and the selection differs between countries.
How MUBI differs from Netflix and other general streamers
MUBI and Netflix are both streaming services, but they solve different viewing problems. Netflix and similar platforms generally compete through breadth, popular entertainment, original series, familiar franchises, and algorithmic discovery. MUBI competes through selection and editorial identity.

This does not mean MUBI has no recognisable or commercially successful films, or that Netflix has no independent or international cinema. The difference is emphasis. MUBI makes the act of choosing films part of the product.

MUBI streaming
The standard MUBI membership provides ad-free streaming access to the available film catalogue. You can browse by the current programme, search for titles, and watch through supported web browsers and apps.

MUBI GO
MUBI GO is a cinema membership that combines MUBI streaming with one hand-picked cinema ticket each week. The ticket is used at participating cinemas showing the selected film, subject to local availability and the applicable rules.

In the United States, the service is available in select cities, so check the MUBI GO U.S. page and the app for participating cinemas before subscribing. MUBI identifies premium-plan availability in the United States, United Kingdom, Ireland, Germany, and Mexico, but arrangements can vary by country.
The MUBI and MUBI GO apps are separate, although the same login can be used. The MUBI GO access FAQ explains the current upgrade and access process.
Notebook
Notebook is MUBI’s film-culture publication. It contains criticism, interviews, essays, filmmaker perspectives, and other writing about cinema, both online and in print. It is part of MUBI’s editorial identity, not merely a help centre or catalogue guide.
Production and distribution
MUBI also works beyond streaming. Through acquisitions, production, theatrical distribution, and digital releases, it helps bring films to audiences in cinemas and at home. That wider activity is why describing MUBI as “streaming-only” is inaccurate.

The annual streaming price works out to approximately $9.99 per month, but it is charged as one annual payment. It is therefore cheaper than paying $14.99 for twelve months only if you expect to use MUBI consistently enough to justify the upfront commitment.
Prices, taxes, promotions, trial eligibility, and billing terms can change. The price shown through Apple, Google, Roku, Fire TV, or another platform may differ from the direct web price. For example, the U.S. App Store listing displayed an annual in-app price of $119.99, compared with the $119.88 web price observed. Check the final checkout screen and the MUBI pricing FAQ.
How MUBI GO works
- Subscribe to the eligible MUBI GO plan in a supported market.
- Open the MUBI GO app and check the weekly selected film.
- View the participating cinemas and eligible showtimes near you.
- Choose a qualifying screening and redeem the ticket according to the app’s instructions.
The practical value depends almost entirely on geography. A weekly cinema ticket can make the premium plan attractive to someone near a participating independent cinema, but it is much less useful if the nearest eligible venue is inconvenient or the weekly selection rarely suits them. The existence of MUBI GO in a country does not guarantee useful coverage in every city.
Before paying, verify the actual cinemas, showtimes, ticket rules, and local selection in the app. The MUBI GO help page describes the basic benefit.
Supported devices and offline downloads
MUBI can be watched through the web and supported apps. Device support changes, so consult MUBI’s current “How can I watch films?” guide rather than relying on an old list of televisions, consoles, or streaming devices.
The current U.S. App Store listing confirms support for Apple platforms including iPhone, iPad, Apple Vision, and Apple TV, subject to the applicable operating-system requirements. Other platforms may offer different features.

MUBI advertises downloads on iOS and Android for offline viewing. A download is not a permanent copy or proof of ownership. It is temporary, app-based access controlled by your membership, device, technical restrictions, and the film’s licensing period.
- Streaming: permission to watch while subscribed and while the title is available in your territory.
- Offline download: temporary access inside a supported mobile app.
- Digital purchase: a separate commercial arrangement that MUBI membership does not provide.
Do not assume that every film can be downloaded or that mobile download features are available on television apps. The MUBI terms of service govern licensing and technical restrictions.
Is MUBI available everywhere?
MUBI operates internationally, but it is not identical in every territory. Local licensing determines which films can be played, and the catalogue changes over time.
That creates several common surprises:
- A film may appear on MUBI’s website or in a search result but be unavailable to play in your country.
- A title available at home may not be available while travelling.
- A MUBI GO plan may exist nationally but have no participating cinema near you.
- Prices and plan features may differ by region and billing platform.
Always check the catalogue and plan page for your location. VPN use should not be treated as an official solution; MUBI’s terms and territory-based licensing restrictions take precedence. Avoid relying on title counts without specifying a country and date.
Does MUBI have TV shows?
MUBI is primarily a film service, not a conventional television-series platform. It may offer occasional episodic, short-form, or special programming, but its main reason to subscribe is cinema. If your priority is a large slate of ongoing series, MUBI is unlikely to replace a general-purpose streamer.

Is MUBI worth it?
There is no universal answer because MUBI’s value depends more on taste and viewing habits than on catalogue size alone.

MUBI is a good fit if you:
- Regularly watch international or independent films.
- Want curated recommendations instead of endless algorithmic choice.
- Enjoy festival films, auteurs, classics, documentaries, shorts, or experimental cinema.
- Value film criticism, interviews, and editorial context.
- Can use MUBI GO at a participating cinema near you.
- Have a specific MUBI acquisition or release you want to watch.
It may be a poor fit if you:
- Mainly want popular franchises, blockbusters, or long-running series.
- Expect a huge permanent catalogue.
- Watch only one or two films a month.
- Live in a region where the current selection does not match your interests.
- Already get most of what you want through the Criterion Channel, Kanopy, a library, festivals, or local repertory cinemas.
For occasional viewers, joining for one month to watch a particular film and then cancelling may be more economical than paying annually, subject to the current promotion and cancellation terms. For regular viewers, the annual plan reduces the effective monthly price, but only if the service remains useful throughout the year.
MUBI alternatives
Criterion Channel
The Criterion Channel is the clearest paid alternative for viewers whose priorities are classic cinema, the Criterion Collection, film history, thematic programming, and supplementary materials. Its U.S. pricing page lists $10.99 per month or $99.99 per year and states that the service includes more than 1,500 films, more than 500 shorts, and 5,000 supplementary features.
MUBI is the stronger match if you specifically want its contemporary curation, MUBI acquisitions, MUBI GO, or the wider MUBI/Notebook ecosystem. Criterion Channel may be the better fit for a deeper library-oriented approach to canonical cinema.

Kanopy
Kanopy may be available at no additional cost through a participating public library, university, or other institution. Eligibility, catalogue access, and monthly viewing limits vary by institution. Check your library before paying for a specialist service.
General-purpose streamers
Netflix and other broad services make more sense for viewers who prioritise mainstream releases, familiar franchises, large catalogues, or television series. They may also carry individual arthouse or documentary films, but film curation is usually not their central proposition.
Repertory cinemas and festivals
If your main goal is theatrical discovery, local repertory cinemas, cinematheques, and festival memberships may offer a better experience than a home-streaming subscription. MUBI GO can bridge those two worlds, but only where its partner venues and weekly selections are practical.
How to subscribe without unpleasant surprises
- Check your country’s catalogue. Confirm that the films and documentaries you care about are playable where you live.
- Test the trial promptly. A seven-day trial may convert automatically to a paid membership unless you cancel in time.
- Compare billing routes. Direct web, Apple, Google, and other platform prices may differ.
- Check MUBI GO locally. Look for a convenient participating cinema before choosing the premium plan.
- Choose monthly or annual deliberately. Annual billing is cheaper per month but requires an upfront payment.
- Save films to watch soon. Licensing changes mean a title you find today may not remain available indefinitely.
How to cancel MUBI
Cancel through the company that bills you:
- Direct MUBI subscription: use the subscription section of your MUBI account.
- Apple, Google, Roku, Fire TV, or another third party: manage cancellation through that platform.
MUBI subscriptions auto-renew until cancelled. Its terms state that direct subscribers should cancel at least one calendar day before renewal to avoid the next charge. Deleting the MUBI app does not necessarily cancel an active subscription. First identify the billing provider, then confirm that the renewal has been stopped.
