What Is MUBI? The Curated Movie Streaming Service Explained

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

MUBI is a paid streaming service for carefully selected films—including independent, international, classic, documentary, experimental and contemporary cinema. Unlike a general-purpose streamer, it emphasizes editorial discovery over the largest possible catalogue. Its film business also includes production, distribution, theatrical releases, and the Notebook film journal.

In selected markets, MUBI GO adds a weekly cinema-ticket benefit. Whether MUBI is worth paying for depends less on the number of titles than on whether its changing selection matches your taste, country and viewing habits.

Quick verdict: who is MUBI for?

MUBI is a strong fit if you want international and independent cinema, enjoy discovering films through human curation, and do not need a single service to provide blockbuster franchises, extensive television, children’s programming and broad household entertainment.

It is a weaker fit if you are searching for one specific film, dislike rotating catalogues, need identical availability while travelling, or are considering MUBI GO without a participating cinema nearby.

What is MUBI, exactly?

MUBI is a subscription video service whose central product is a changing, editorially selected film line-up. The service is designed to reduce the endless-scroll problem: rather than presenting thousands of titles as the main selling point, it puts a smaller, shaped selection in front of you.

That selection can include films from established auteurs, festival discoveries, emerging directors, debuts, documentaries, classics and formally adventurous work. “Curated” does not mean every film is obscure or difficult; accessible or well-known films can appear when they fit MUBI’s editorial identity.

MUBI’s identity extends beyond the streaming app. The company describes itself as a film producer and distributor, and it is involved in theatrical releases. Its Notebook publication offers criticism, interviews, essays and other film-culture writing online and in print. A streaming membership should not be assumed to include every print issue.

The official overview is available at MUBI’s help centre.

What kinds of films are on MUBI?

  • International and foreign-language cinema
  • Independent and arthouse films
  • Classic and repertory titles
  • Festival discoveries and films from emerging filmmakers
  • Work by established auteurs
  • Documentaries
  • Experimental and formally adventurous projects
  • Selected mainstream or accessible films that suit MUBI’s curatorial approach
  • Films MUBI has produced, acquired or distributed

The result is better understood as a viewing experience than as a fixed genre list. One week may foreground a director or national cinema; another may highlight a recent festival title or a film-history theme. The line-up changes, so a recommendation or title page is not a promise that the film will remain playable.

MUBI’s catalogue is not the same as its film database

MUBI’s website contains film information, editorial pages and watchlists alongside films currently available to stream. A title appearing in search results or on a film page does not automatically prove that it is included in your subscription in your country.

Licensing is territorial, and availability periods vary. MUBI labels films that are due to leave within the next 14 days; use those notices and your watchlist when planning what to watch. More detail is in MUBI’s availability guidance.

How MUBI differs from Netflix and other broad streamers

MUBI General-purpose streamers
Smaller, editorially selected line-up Larger, broader entertainment catalogues
Strong emphasis on film history, international and independent work Strong emphasis on popular entertainment, originals and major releases
Discovery guided primarily by curatorial choices Discovery heavily shaped by personalised algorithms
Frequent turnover within a concentrated film selection Turnover across films, series and other entertainment
Best for intentional film watching Usually stronger for television, families, franchises and casual viewing

MUBI’s advantage is concentration and taste-making, not quantity. It does not guarantee every major classic, the best version of every film, or a particular title in every country.

How much does MUBI cost?

The following are prices displayed for the United States on August 16, 2026. They are a dated snapshot, not permanent rates; country, taxes, billing platform, promotions and eligibility can change the amount.

Plan Displayed US price What is shown
Standard MUBI monthly $14.99 per month Ad-free streaming and mobile downloads
Standard MUBI annual $119.88 upfront Equivalent to $9.99 per month when paid annually; page displays 33% savings
Free trial Seven days Subject to eligibility
MUBI GO (US page) $19.99 per month Streaming plus the MUBI GO cinema benefit in eligible locations

See the current MUBI membership page and US MUBI GO page before subscribing. Subscriptions renew automatically unless cancelled. A direct subscription must generally be cancelled at least one calendar day before renewal; Apple, Google, Roku, Fire TV and other third-party subscriptions normally must be cancelled through that platform. The full terms are at MUBI’s terms of service.

What is MUBI GO?

MUBI GO is not a second on-demand catalogue. It combines MUBI streaming with a selected cinema ticket each week in participating markets. The benefit is subject to eligible films, partner cinemas, showtimes, location, availability and screening exclusions.

In the United States, the displayed $19.99 monthly plan is currently limited to listed cities including Atlanta, Boston, Chicago, Dallas, Denver, Los Angeles, New York City, Portland, San Diego, San Francisco, Seattle and Washington, DC. Availability is not nationwide. MUBI GO uses a separate app, although your normal MUBI login works there. Check its cinema map and nearby showtimes before subscribing.

Some IMAX, 3D, Q&A, satellite and other special or premium screenings may be excluded, and MUBI says participating cinemas, titles and rules can change. The help centre explains whether GO is included with a particular membership at this page; setup instructions are at this page, with location information at this page.

When does MUBI GO pay off?

  • You live near a participating cinema and can use its listed showtimes.
  • You regularly buy cinema tickets and are likely to enjoy the selected weekly film.
  • You value combining home viewing with theatrical discovery.

It is poor value when no partner venue is convenient, you mainly watch at home, or you want unrestricted choice of cinema, film and screening. The nominal price of a ticket is irrelevant if you cannot use the benefit.

Where can you watch MUBI?

MUBI supports web viewing, iOS and Android apps, Chromecast casting, and AirPlay from the iOS app to Apple TV and compatible AirPlay 2 televisions. Smart TVs and streaming players are supported, but the exact device list changes. Check the current official support page at MUBI’s TV-streaming guide, then confirm that your television platform has the official app. If it does not, Chromecast or AirPlay may be alternatives.

Can you download MUBI films?

Yes, downloads are available in the iOS and Android apps, not on a computer. Files use the device’s internal storage rather than an external memory card.

  • An unused download remains available in the app for 30 days.
  • After playback starts, it remains available for 48 hours before the licence must be renewed online.

See the rules for computer downloads, download expiry and memory cards.

Does MUBI vary by country?

Yes. MUBI operates in more than 195 territories, but each country has its own line-up because film rights are divided geographically. The same subscription can be used while travelling, yet the available films, subtitles and audio options can change with your location. MUBI explains territory availability at its country guide and travel use at its travel guide.

Do not assume that a film recommended from the US catalogue is streamable in the UK, Canada, Australia, India or another market. Check the title in your own account before planning around it.

Subtitles, audio, picture quality and accessibility

Subtitle and audio options are title- and territory-specific. MUBI has localised service offerings in markets including the US, UK, Canada, Mexico, France, Germany, Italy, the Netherlands, Turkey, Brazil, Argentina, Chile and Colombia, but that does not mean every film has every language.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

MUBI aims to provide HD and 4K when an appropriate master exists. Older films and some international releases may not have a high-resolution version, and your connection and device also affect playback. Inspect the individual film page for the available subtitle, audio and quality information. See language guidance and HD guidance.

MUBI compared with specialist alternatives

Service or option May suit you better when…
Criterion Channel You prioritise Criterion restorations, film-history collections, special features and filmmaker context.
Kanopy Your public library or educational institution provides access; eligibility and borrowing limits depend on that institution.
OVID You want a particularly narrow focus on documentary, independent and international cinema.
Library DVD/Blu-ray services and local cinematheques You want physical-media extras, rare titles or local repertory programmes.
Netflix, Max, Prime Video or Apple TV+ Your household needs major releases, television series, franchises and broad general entertainment.

These services are not interchangeable. The right choice depends on catalogue fit and actual use, not just the advertised monthly price.

Is MUBI worth paying for?

Choose standard MUBI when you want a guided stream of independent, international, classic or festival-oriented films and are comfortable following an editorial selection. Its ad-free presentation and mobile downloads add practical value for regular viewers.

Choose MUBI GO only after confirming a nearby participating cinema, usable showtimes and a realistic chance of attending the selected films. Treat the ticket as a location-dependent benefit, not as an unrestricted cinema pass.

Choose another specialist service when your priority is a defined archive with extensive extras, library-funded access, documentaries, physical media or local theatrical programming. Avoid MUBI when you need blockbuster franchises, a large family catalogue, extensive television or permanent access to one particular title.
