Low-Latency HLS (LL-HLS) is Apple’s extension to HTTP Live Streaming that reduces the delay between a live event and its playback. It does this by publishing partial media segments before a full segment is complete and by letting players request playlist updates more efficiently. It still uses HTTP delivery and is designed to work with content delivery networks (CDNs) and caches.
LL-HLS is an end-to-end delivery setup, not a latency switch. The packager, server, cache or CDN, player, device, and network all affect the delay a viewer experiences.
How LL-HLS reduces delay
Traditional HLS delivers media in segments and updates a playlist to tell the player what is available. LL-HLS adds mechanisms that let a player begin receiving media sooner and learn about new media with less waiting and fewer extra requests.
Partial segments
A packager can publish smaller parts of a media segment while the complete segment is still being produced. The playlist uses EXT-X-PART to identify these parts; EXT-X-PART-INF provides information about their target duration. Apple’s guide illustrates 200-millisecond parts within a six-second parent segment. These are explanatory examples, not required or universal settings.

Blocking playlist reloads
Rather than repeatedly requesting a playlist and checking whether it has changed, a player can request a future media sequence or partial segment and have the server hold that request until the requested content appears in an updated playlist. The delivery directives include _HLS_msn and _HLS_part. This can reduce unnecessary polling and waiting.
Preload hints
EXT-X-PRELOAD-HINT identifies a resource the server expects to publish next. A player can request it before it is ready, allowing the response to provide the partial segment as soon as it becomes available. Apple engineer Roger Pantos described the intended benefit at WWDC 2020: “The benefit of preload hinting is that it gets the media flowing to the client from the server as soon as it’s available.”

Playlist delta updates and rendition reports
EXT-X-SKIPcan provide a reduced playlist update by omitting older entries before the skip boundary, rather than retransmitting them all.EXT-X-RENDITION-REPORTcommunicates another rendition’s current playlist position, helping a player switch between renditions with fewer discovery round trips.
What LL-HLS latency can you expect?
Apple’s stated design target was one to two seconds of delay from live at scale over the public internet under reasonable round-trip conditions. Roger Pantos described that target at WWDC 2019; it is not a guarantee or a universal measured result. Actual end-to-end latency depends on the full delivery path, including packaging, server behavior, CDN and cache handling, the player and device, and network conditions.
In practice, judge a deployment by measuring playback under the network, player, and device conditions its audience will use. LL-HLS tags in a playlist alone do not establish that a stream achieves a particular delay.

What is required to deploy LL-HLS?
Apple’s implementation guide specifies the Low-Latency Server Configuration Profile. LL-HLS also depends on the packager producing partial segments and the server and HTTP caches or CDN handling the relevant low-latency requests and playlist behavior. The player must support the mechanisms as well.
- Package for low latency. Produce partial media segments and the playlist information that describes them, including the applicable LL-HLS tags.
- Configure delivery. Ensure the server and delivery path support the Low-Latency Server Configuration Profile and the necessary playlist and media requests.
- Verify cache and CDN behavior. Confirm that cached delivery provides reasonably current playlists and handles blocking reloads and partial-segment delivery correctly.
- Test the intended playback path. Measure actual delay and reliability using the target player, device, network, and CDN route.
If a server does not support a required configuration aspect, clients can fall back to regular-latency HLS. Apple’s documentation describes the mechanisms and requirements, but does not establish a current cross-vendor compatibility matrix or benchmark.

How to evaluate an LL-HLS implementation
- End-to-end latency: Measure live-to-playback delay in the conditions relevant to viewers; do not infer it from playlist tags or configuration examples.
- Player and device support: Check the actual player and playback devices your audience uses.
- Server and CDN behavior: Confirm support for partial-segment delivery, blocking playlist reloads, preload hints, and current playlist delivery through caches.
- Network conditions: Include realistic round-trip times and connection variability when evaluating responsiveness.
- Reliability and operating cost: Consider whether the complete path remains dependable at the required latency and what operating resources it requires.
Apple’s materials explain the protocol mechanisms; they do not rank vendors or provide a universal performance comparison.
