What Is Links Golf, and How Is It Different From Parkland Golf?

Links golf is golf played on linksland: the coastal terrain associated with the game’s early courses in Scotland and Ireland. Parkland golf is an inland setting, including meadow, farmland, and tree-lined ground. The distinction is primarily about landscape and how a course uses it, not a separate rulebook or a simple checklist of trees, grass, or distance from the sea.

That difference matters because the setting changes the wind exposure, openness, available lies, and the way golfers read the ground. A course can look links-like without being a true links course, and neither style is automatically harder.

What the word links actually means

Linksland is the starting point

In golf’s historical vocabulary, a links is tied to linksland, a type of coastal terrain. The earliest courses associated with the game developed along the coastlines of Scotland and Ireland, where golfers found open ground shaped by natural forces rather than a purpose-built park or formal garden. The word therefore describes a relationship between golf and a particular landscape.

The R&A’s Golf Around the World Fourth Edition (2021) describes golf spreading from those early settings to many inland sites. That history is important: “links” is not a universal synonym for any course that feels rugged or exposed. It names the coastal landform and the tradition that grew from it.

The land functions as part of the course

The USGA’s 2012 account of golf’s use of water explains that early players worked over and against the existing landscape. Natural contours helped determine where holes could run and how golfers encountered them. Instead of treating the ground as a blank canvas to be levelled and replanted, links golf evolved by adapting the course to what was already there.

That does not mean every bump or hollow on a coastal course is untouched. It means the identity of a links course is connected to the way its setting and landform shape the layout. The terrain is not merely scenery behind the fairway; it is part of the playing problem.

What parkland golf means

An inland course setting

Parkland golf refers to courses established inland. The R&A history identifies meadow, farmland, and tree-lined parkland among the settings used as golf expanded. “Parkland” is therefore a geographic and visual description of an inland environment, not a promise that every course has the same architecture, turf, or level of tree cover.

An inland course may retain existing features, reshape them extensively, or combine open and wooded holes. The label tells you where the course’s setting fits in the broad historical contrast with coastal linksland; it does not provide a complete design specification.

Why the two labels can be imperfect

Course-style names are useful shorthand, but they are not a governing-body taxonomy with a universal test. A course may borrow visual or strategic ideas associated with links golf while remaining inland. Another may sit near the coast but lack the landform and historical context normally meant by links.

For that reason, a responsible description considers the whole setting and the course’s relationship with its terrain. Counting trees, identifying one grass species, or measuring the distance to the shoreline cannot settle the question by itself.

Links golf and parkland golf compared

Comparison Links golf Parkland golf
Primary setting Coastal linksland, historically associated with Scotland and Ireland Inland sites such as meadow, farmland, or tree-lined parkland
Relationship with land Layouts grew by working with existing coastal contours and features The term identifies an inland setting; the degree of landscape alteration varies by course
Exposure Often open to changing coastal weather, including wind May feel more sheltered where trees and inland topography interrupt the elements, but conditions vary
Visual clues Open ground, fescue, and few trees can create a links-like impression Tree-lined or cultivated scenery may suggest parkland
Classification caution Wind, fescue, or a treeless appearance alone do not establish a true links course A parkland label should not be treated as a single standard design or maintenance regime
Rules The same Rules of Golf apply; the labels describe setting and playing character, not separate rules

The last two comparisons are practical explanations, not a formal classification issued by a governing body. Real courses can combine characteristics, and their conditions can change with weather and maintenance.

How the setting changes the playing experience

Wind and exposure

Open coastal ground can leave a player more exposed to wind than a heavily sheltered inland layout. Wind affects the flight and stopping behavior of a shot, so golfers must judge direction and strength throughout a round rather than rely only on a fixed yardage. The effect is not guaranteed on every links course, but openness is one reason links golf is commonly experienced as weather-dependent.

Parkland holes can also be windy, particularly on exposed ridges or open farmland. Trees and other inland features may interrupt airflow on some holes, while another hole on the same course can be fully exposed. The useful distinction is the degree to which the setting tends to expose play, not an assumption that one style is always calm and the other always windy.

Contours and ground interaction

When a layout follows existing contours, slopes, hollows, and rises become strategic information. A golfer has to assess the lie, the direction in which the ground falls, and how a shot might use or avoid those features. This is a consequence of designing around landform, not a guarantee that every links course has identical turf or firmness.

Inland parkland courses may have substantial contouring as well. Their defining point is that they occupy an inland setting, so a particular course can be rolling, flat, wooded, open, or a combination. The setting supplies context; it does not dictate one universal shot pattern.

Open sightlines and trees

Few trees can make a course look like a links, and tree-lined holes can create the visual impression of parkland. Those are clues, not proof. Vegetation may be changed by construction, management, storms, or local climate, while the underlying landform and design history remain the stronger context for the label.

How to decide whether a course is truly links

When a course description uses the word links, work through these questions instead of relying on a single photograph:

  1. What is the setting? Is the course on the coastal linksland associated with the term, or is it an inland site?
  2. How does the layout use the land? Does the routing retain and work with the existing terrain, or is the appearance mainly a visual imitation?
  3. What is the overall exposure? Consider openness and weather, especially wind, without treating either as a pass–fail requirement.
  4. Is the description based on one feature? Fescue, few trees, or a windy forecast can support a links-like feel but cannot establish the classification alone.

This approach leaves room for borderline cases. It also prevents a marketing description or an isolated photograph from turning a broad design resemblance into a historical or geographic claim.

The Erin Hills example

A USGA press-conference transcript from the 2017 U.S. Open records a discussion of Erin Hills in which speakers noted wind, fescue, and few trees but did not classify the course as links. The example is useful precisely because it contains several features many golfers associate with links golf. Those features can influence the experience without changing the underlying setting and classification.

Are links courses governed by different rules?

No. Links and parkland are descriptions of course setting and playing character. The R&A’s Rules of Golf explain that the rules govern play on many different kinds of courses, and the R&A and USGA maintain a global rules framework rather than separate codes for coastal and inland layouts.

A local committee can publish conditions of competition, local rules, or temporary provisions for a specific event, but those are not a second set of “links rules.” A golfer moving from a parkland course to a links course is still playing under the same fundamental Rules of Golf.

Common mistakes when explaining the difference

“Links” means beside the ocean

Coastal proximity is relevant because linksland is a coastal setting, but a shoreline view alone is not enough. A course’s landform, historical context, and use of the existing landscape matter too. Conversely, an inland course can reproduce some links-like visual or strategic qualities without becoming a true links course.

Any course with fescue is links

Fescue can contribute to a links-like appearance, as can open ground and wind. The Erin Hills discussion demonstrates why a feature-based checklist fails: several familiar clues were present, yet the course was not described as links.

Parkland always means heavily wooded

Tree-lined parkland is one inland setting named in the R&A’s historical account, but parkland also includes meadow and farmland. Some inland courses are open; others are wooded. The word does not guarantee a particular tree count.

Links golf is always more difficult

Authoritative material on the distinction supports differences in setting and conditions, not a universal difficulty ranking. Wind, weather, contours, maintenance, hole design, and a player’s experience can change the challenge from one course to another. Calling one category automatically harder oversimplifies the evidence.

What a golfer should expect before playing

If the course is described as links

  • Expect the landscape and weather to be part of the decision-making, especially where the course is open and exposed.
  • Read the lie and surrounding contours rather than judging a shot only by distance.
  • Check the course’s own description for its location and design history; do not assume that a photograph settles the classification.
  • Allow for day-to-day variation. Wind and other conditions can alter how the same holes play.

If the course is described as parkland

  • Confirm whether the setting is wooded, meadow-like, farmland-based, or a mixture.
  • Do not infer identical conditions from the word parkland alone.
  • Look for the course’s local information about weather, contours, and playing surfaces, since inland layouts differ widely.

These expectations are practical rather than prescriptive. They help a golfer prepare for the setting without turning broad labels into rigid promises.

Why the distinction still matters

Knowing the difference improves course descriptions, trip planning, and conversation about golf architecture. It tells a reader whether a claim concerns a coastal tradition or an inland setting, and it separates genuine geographic context from a handful of visual similarities.

It also keeps comparisons fair. Links golf and parkland golf are not opposing rule systems or fixed difficulty classes. They are ways of describing how golf occupies land. Once that distinction is clear, a golfer can evaluate the particular course in front of them—its terrain, exposure, vegetation, weather, and design—without expecting every example to conform to a stereotype.

Historical sources behind these definitions

The R&A’s Golf Around the World Fourth Edition (2021) provides the historical contrast between early coastal settings and the inland meadow, farmland, and tree-lined sites that appeared as golf spread. The USGA’s Golf’s Use of Water: Solutions for a More Sustainable Game, Volume 11, Number 12 (December 2012), describes linksland and the way early golfers worked with existing landscapes. A USGA 2017 U.S. Open press-conference transcript supplies the Erin Hills example, while the R&A’s Rules of Golf and the joint R&A–USGA governance information establish that the same rules apply across course types.
