The Week identified it as Key & Peele’s most-viewed YouTube video at the time of a 2015 interview, reporting more than 33 million views; the Associated Press reported 215 million views in 2023. Those dated figures make it a strong contender, not a definitive all-time ranking or a live view count.
Why “Substitute Teacher” is the leading answer
The sketch’s comic engine is simple and instantly legible: substitute teacher Mr. Garvey calls students’ names as he believes they should be pronounced, then treats the students’ corrections as challenges to his authority. His certainty and escalating classroom discipline turn a roll call into a confrontation.

In a 2015 interview with The Week, Keegan-Michael Key and Jordan Peele described the premise as one brought to them by a writer: an inner-city substitute teaching an all-white classroom. Peele said the group developed the names and Garvey’s physicality together; Key described immediately embodying the character. That combination of a recognizable setting, memorable names, and a strong performance helps explain why the sketch became so widely shared.
What the view figures do—and don’t—show
| Report | Figure | What it establishes |
|---|---|---|
| The Week, 2015 | More than 33 million YouTube views | The Week described “Substitute Teacher” as the duo’s then most-viewed YouTube video in its interview. |
| Associated Press, 2023 | 215 million YouTube views | AP cited this total in its review of Key’s sketch-comedy book. |
The reports are useful evidence of the sketch’s reach, but they are snapshots published years apart—not a current count or a standardized comparison of every Key & Peele sketch. The AP’s 2023 review also notes that The History of Sketch Comedy: A Journey Through the Art and Craft of Humor, written by Keegan-Michael Key and Elle Key, includes Key’s breakdown of “Substitute Teacher.”

Other sketches with a strong claim to fame
“East/West College Bowl”
The football-player introductions and outlandish names made this sketch a recurring series and a natural rival when people mean recognizable cultural references rather than one video’s views. Paramount+ features an official “Best of East/West Bowl Sketches” page. In a 2013 TV Guide interview, Peele said the first sketch took a couple of nights to create and the second took a couple of weeks, and discussed inspiration from real football names.
The Obama Anger Translator
The Anger Translator sketches, featuring Luther as President Obama’s translator for the anger he kept restrained in public, are another plausible answer. Peele told TV Guide that President Obama’s response made Luther feel like a real phenomenon. Paramount+ episode listings also describe Luther as Obama’s anger translator.

So, which sketch is the most famous?
If the question is which sketch has the strongest documented claim by reported YouTube reach, choose “Substitute Teacher.” If “famous” means a recurring series, a political-cultural reference, or the sketch someone personally remembers first, “East/West College Bowl” and the Obama Anger Translator have credible claims too. The available figures do not provide one consistent all-time ranking across all sketches.
Paramount+ has official Key & Peele sketch and show pages, but viewing availability can vary by region and change over time; check the service in your location for current listings.
