Danny Trejo’s chest tattoo depicts a charra, a woman wearing a sombrero. Trejo says his friend Harry “Super Jew” Ross tattooed it by hand while they were incarcerated, starting at San Quentin and finishing at Soledad after a stop at Folsom. Trejo recalls that the work took about three years. The sources describe the image and its creation, but do not establish a definitive symbolic meaning.
What does Danny Trejo’s chest tattoo depict?
Trejo identifies the figure as “the charra.” In an excerpt from his memoir, he describes “a huge, hot charra in a sombrero sprawled across my chest.” Later profiles likewise describe a woman wearing a sombrero. Trejo’s memoir excerpt and The Guardian’s 2018 profile support that description.
Who tattooed it, and where?
Trejo credits his friend Harry “Super Jew” Ross, whom he had known since they were young. Trejo’s account places the work across three California prisons as he was transferred: it began at San Quentin, continued at Folsom, and was completed at Soledad. In a mitúTV interview published December 9, 2025, Trejo names Ross and recounts the locations. A 2011 Bullz-Eye interview also names Ross and describes the tattoo as work done across three penitentiaries.
How was the tattoo made, and how long did it take?
Trejo says Ross made it with needle and thread. In the 2025 interview, Trejo recalled, “The tattoo on my chest, the charra, that took about 3 years,” and described the process as “done with needle and thread, so painful.” An earlier 2010 TIME interview also records Trejo saying a friend tattooed his chest in prison with needle and thread; that interview mentions a hand-made needle and Indian ink. These are Trejo’s recollections, not independent technical documentation of the process.

What does the tattoo mean?
The available accounts establish what the image depicts and how Trejo says it was made, but they do not give a definitive explanation of its personal symbolism. Calling the figure a charra answers what is pictured; it should not be treated as proof of a particular message or meaning.
