Tammy Lynn Michaels was Melissa Etheridge’s partner, and the two held a wedding ceremony in Malibu in 2003. But Etheridge said the following year that they were still seeking a license for a civil ceremony, so the event alone does not establish that they were legally married. They announced their separation in 2010 after nearly nine years together and had twins in 2006.
Who was Tammy Lynn Michaels to Melissa Etheridge?
Michaels is best known in this story as Etheridge’s partner. The pair held a wedding ceremony in Malibu on September 20, 2003. A contemporaneous Advocate interview described the event as a wedding and covered their relationship; later reporting also called it a commitment ceremony.
“First wife” is a familiar shorthand in later biographies, but it can blur an important distinction: a wedding ceremony is not by itself proof of a civil marriage. A 2021 Guardian profile referred to Michaels as Etheridge’s then wife and identified Linda Wallem as Etheridge’s later wife. That wording reflects the profile’s 2021 account, not a verified statement about current status.
Did Melissa Etheridge and Tammy Lynn Michaels legally marry?
The available contemporary account does not establish that their 2003 ceremony resulted in a civil marriage. In a 2004 interview with The Washington Post, Etheridge described it as “a marriage ceremony” and said they “will only be looking for a license for the civil ceremony.” The Associated Press later described the 2003 event as a commitment ceremony.

The distinction matters because descriptions such as “wedding,” “marriage ceremony,” and “wife” can refer to the couple’s commitment and how later writers characterized it; they do not independently settle the legal question. The Washington Post also reported that California’s Domestic Partners Rights and Responsibilities Act had been signed the day before the ceremony and would take effect later. That historical detail does not establish the couple’s legal status under subsequent law.
When did they hold the ceremony and separate?
- September 20, 2003: Etheridge and Michaels held their ceremony in Malibu, with friends and family.
- 2004: Etheridge told The Washington Post they were still looking for a license for a civil ceremony.
- 2006: Michaels gave birth to the couple’s twins.
- April 15, 2010: They announced their separation. CBS News reported they had been together nearly nine years.
Accounts differ on exactly when the relationship began: a 2003 interview described Michaels as Etheridge’s partner of two years, while CBS’s 2010 report called the relationship nearly nine years long. Those descriptions do not support a precise start date.
Did they have children together?
Yes. Michaels gave birth to twins in 2006. The Associated Press report spells the daughter’s name “Johnnie Rose,” while CBS News spells it “Jonnie Rose”; the reports therefore support saying the couple had twins without treating either spelling as definitively resolved. The AP reported that the couple used an anonymous sperm-bank donor.

In an Associated Press report published April 23, 2010, Etheridge described the split as “as mutual as those things can be,” called it sad, and praised Michaels as “a wonderful woman and an incredible mother.” She also said Michaels would always be in her life. CBS reported the couple’s joint statement asking for consideration and respect for their family as they went through the difficult period.
Those public comments describe how Etheridge characterized the separation; they do not establish its private causes. The reports cited here do not provide a substantiated account of why the relationship ended.
