What Is Influencing the Indian Box Office? Gen Z, Social Media and the Numbers Behind the Claim

A PVR INOX executive says Gen Z is “driving a lot of the consumption decisions” in cinema. The available evidence supports part of that view: younger viewers make up a large share of Hindi-film audiences, and social media shapes how films are discovered and talked about. It does not show that Gen Z is the main driver of all-India box-office totals. Read the claim as an informed industry observation, not a measured cause.

Who made the claim, and what she actually said

The statement comes from Nayana Bijli, Lead: Distribution and Licensing at PVR INOX Limited, in an interview published by Scroll.in on December 3, 2025. Her explanation of what moves audiences is broader than one trend. In the interview she points to release timing, social-media virality, audience response and film programming as relevant influences. The Gen Z remark sits inside that list.

Her words were: “Another thing I am noticing in audience behaviour is that Gen Z is driving a lot of the consumption decisions. They are the primary consumers on social media. When they see something going viral, they follow through on it.” She cited the films Saiyaara, Mahavatar Narasimha and the Gujarati film Laalo – Krishna Sada Sahaayate as examples. She also said that cinema programming is guided by data: “We look at the data – what’s working, what’s topical.”

Two features of this quote matter for interpretation. First, it is an executive’s view of patterns she sees, based on her role in distribution and programming. It is not a published estimate of how much Gen Z contributes to box-office revenue. Second, she describes young viewers as people who influence decisions, including those of families and religious communities. That is a claim about social influence, and it is not measured in the sources available here.

What the audience data shows for Hindi cinema

The most specific age figures come from Ormax Media’s 2026 audience report, known as TOBAR. Its public page offers highlights; the full report is subscription-accessible. The study covers 2,000 regular Hindi theatregoers in India, and it is framed around an estimated market of 28.5 million regular Hindi cinema audiences aged 15 and above in urban India. The findings describe that audience. They should not be read as a national survey of all moviegoers or as evidence for films in other languages.

Measure (Hindi cinema, TOBAR 2026) Reported figure
Share of Hindi box office from audiences below 30 57%
Share of first-day Hindi box office from audiences below 30 70%
Audiences who shared film-related memes after a theatre screening 40%
Top three film-marketing sources YouTube, Instagram, online ticketing apps

Why first-day figures differ from full-run figures

The 70% first-day share is higher than the 57% full-run share. That gap is consistent with an audience that acts quickly on trailers, reviews and social buzz in the opening days, while later weeks draw a wider mix of viewers. The reporting describes the gap but does not explain its cause, so treat the reason as an inference.

How discovery and sharing work in the audience data

Ormax identifies YouTube, Instagram and online ticketing apps as the three leading marketing sources in its study. Bijli’s comment about viral content fits this pattern: a clip or meme that spreads on a platform can bring viewers into a theatre. The 40% figure for meme-sharing after screenings shows that the conversation continues after the film is seen, which can keep a title visible during its run. Neither figure measures how many tickets those posts sold.

Revenue and admissions tell different stories

Box-office claims are often reported as revenue, but revenue and footfalls can move in opposite directions. Ormax’s gross figures use a unified gross-box-office measure across languages. Its 2025 report shows the gap clearly.

Measure 2025 (full year) January to August 2026
Gross box office ₹13,395 crore, a record gross year per Ormax ₹9,868 crore, 18% above the same period in 2025
Footfalls 83.2 crore, down 6% year on year Not stated
Average ticket price ₹161, up 20% from ₹134 Not stated
Strongest month Not stated August, ₹1,768 crore, best month of 2026 to that point

In 2025, more money came from fewer admissions. Ormax attributes part of the higher average ticket price to a larger share of Hindi and international films, which it describes as higher-ATP languages, along with higher prices for some large South-market films. A rising average ticket price can therefore lift revenue even when fewer people buy tickets, so revenue alone does not show how many people are going to the cinema.

The 2026 figures carry their own caveat. Some August releases were still in theatres when the report was prepared, and the report includes projected collections. Figures for films still running may be revised later.

Where the 2026 market share is moving

  • Hindi cinema held a share of roughly 40% of box office in 2026 through August, according to Ormax.
  • International cinema held 15% in the same period, compared with 10% in 2025.
  • These are market-share figures and do not show why audiences chose these films. They also do not establish whether younger viewers drove the shift.

Friction in the audience: food, drink and ticket prices

The same TOBAR study asked what limits more frequent visits. It identifies overpriced theatre food and beverages as the biggest barrier, ahead of high ticket prices. This is a useful counterweight to the promotional story. Attracting a young audience through social media does not remove the cost of an outing, and the study suggests that concession pricing may matter more to frequency than ticket pricing for this group.

What the evidence does not establish

  • No named, directly attributable statistical study in the available sources proves that Gen Z causes changes in all-India box-office consumption.
  • The Hindi audience findings do not describe Tamil, Telugu, Malayalam, Kannada, Bengali, Gujarati or other regional-language audiences.
  • PwC’s 2025–29 outlook describes a population of 910 million millennials and Gen Z as central to India’s broader entertainment and media sector. That is sector context, not a count of cinema-goers, and it does not measure their effect on ticket sales.
  • Bijli’s examples are illustrative. They show that viral content can accompany a film’s success, not that it caused that success.

How to test the claim against a film’s numbers

  1. Check whether the claim refers to all-India box office or to a specific language. The strongest age data here is for Hindi cinema.
  2. Separate opening-day figures from full-run totals. First-day audiences skew younger in the TOBAR data.
  3. Compare gross revenue with footfalls. A rise in revenue with falling admissions points to pricing or mix, not necessarily more viewers.
  4. Look for the source of any “viral” claim. A trend on social media is a discovery channel; it is not proof of a sales effect unless a dataset links the two.
  5. Check whether the figure is a running-film estimate. Ongoing collections can change.

Applied to the 2025 and 2026 numbers, this approach supports a narrower reading: younger Hindi-film audiences are a large part of the opening-day and overall Hindi box office, social platforms are a leading way films are found, and admission volume and revenue are moving in different directions.

Ormax’s audience report and its box-office reports are the primary sources for the figures above. Bijli’s comments come from the Scroll.in interview published December 3, 2025.

The Gen Z claim is best understood as a plausible description of how younger viewers influence which films get noticed, not as a settled explanation of the Indian box office.
