HTTP Live Streaming (HLS) delivers live and on-demand audio or video over HTTP. A player starts with a playlist, uses it to find a suitable media stream, then downloads and plays that stream in segments. For live broadcasts, it checks the playlist again as new segments become available. HLS supports adaptive playback, but reliable results also depend on how the media is packaged, delivered, and supported by the viewer’s device.
How HLS streaming works
HLS separates a stream into media segments and uses playlists to tell a player where those segments are and how to play them. Apple describes the protocol as using ordinary web servers and content delivery networks (CDNs), rather than requiring a specialized streaming transport throughout the delivery path. An encoder or packager creates the segments and playlists; servers or a CDN deliver them; the player requests and presents the media.
- The production or packaging system creates media segments and one or more playlists.
- The player requests the multivariant playlist, which lists available media streams.
- It selects a stream, retrieves that stream’s media playlist, and downloads the listed segments in sequence.
- If suitable alternatives are available, the player can switch streams as network conditions or playback needs change.
- For a live broadcast, the player reloads the media playlist periodically to discover new segments. For protected media, it may also need to retrieve keys and decrypt content.
Apple’s description of HLS emphasizes that it is designed for reliability and can dynamically adapt playback to the available speed of wired and wireless connections. That is a design capability, not a guarantee of uninterrupted playback: the alternatives must be packaged correctly, delivered successfully, and supported by the client.
Master, multivariant, and media playlists
The playlist names can be confusing because terminology has evolved. Apple’s current documentation uses “Multivariant Playlist” for the entry point that lists alternate media playlists; RFC 8216 calls this a “Master Playlist.” Both terms refer to the playlist that helps a client discover stream options.

- Multivariant (master) playlist: Lists alternate media playlists, often at different bit rates, and can describe other tracks.
- Media playlist: Describes the segments for one selected stream. A live playlist changes as the broadcast advances; a video-on-demand (VOD) playlist describes a fixed asset and can mark its end.
- Media segment: A consecutive piece of audio or video that the client fetches and plays. Apple’s authoring guidance covers MPEG-2 transport stream and fragmented MP4 media formats.
In short: the multivariant playlist points to choices, and a media playlist points to the pieces of the chosen stream. A playlist is not itself the video; the client still has to retrieve the referenced media and be able to play it.
How adaptive bitrate playback works
A packager can provide alternate renditions of the same program, such as streams with different bit rates. The player can choose among those options and switch when network conditions change. This can help playback continue on a constrained connection or use a higher-quality rendition when more bandwidth is available.

Adaptive bitrate is a client behavior enabled by supplying appropriate alternatives; it does not make every stream switch seamlessly. Renditions need to be prepared consistently, and the player, codecs, media format, and delivery path all matter. Audio, captions, languages, and video variants should also be packaged so the intended tracks are available to the target clients.
Live HLS and on-demand HLS
HLS can deliver both live broadcasts and prerecorded VOD. The key difference for a player is whether the media playlist continues to advance:

HLS itself does not determine how a program is produced, nor does using HLS automatically make a broadcast low-latency. The encoder or packager, playlist behavior, server or CDN configuration, and player all contribute to the result.
What Low-Latency HLS adds
Low-Latency HLS (LL-HLS) extends HLS to reduce the wait between production and playback while retaining HTTP-based delivery. It adds mechanisms that let the client and delivery system work with updates and media earlier than a conventional full-segment workflow.

- Partial segments: Parts of a segment can be published before the complete parent segment is ready.
- Playlist delta updates: An update can omit older playlist entries the client already has.
- Blocking playlist reloads: A request can wait for a playlist update instead of repeatedly polling without new information.
- Preload hints: The playlist can help a player request an upcoming resource.
- Rendition reports: Information can assist a player switching between renditions.
These features require compatible behavior from the production tools and the server or content-delivery path; adding a playlist tag alone is not enough to make an end-to-end stream low-latency. Apple’s guidance recommends a one-second part target, with the choice tied to the expected client-to-server round-trip time. Apple also notes that a player can fall back to regular-latency HLS if a server lacks the required low-latency configuration support. No particular end-to-end delay follows from the protocol name alone.

HLS playlists can reference encryption keys, which means a protected-playback workflow may require the client to authenticate, fetch keys, and decrypt media. For protected delivery to Apple devices, Apple’s authoring specification describes FairPlay Streaming requirements and related encryption constraints.

A playlist being present does not by itself mean the content is protected correctly. A deployment needs appropriate key handling, authorization, secure transport such as TLS, and client support for the chosen protection scheme. Content owners should validate the full playback and key-delivery path, not just the playlist.
What to check when implementing or troubleshooting HLS
When playback fails or behaves inconsistently, check the complete chain: packaging, playlist references, segment availability, delivery, and client support. Apple’s authoring requirements address accurate segment-duration signaling, alignment across audio and video playlists, playlist types for VOD and event streams, HTTP delivery details, transport security, and content-protection constraints.
- The playlist does not load: Check that the playlist URL is correct and reachable, and that server or CDN responses allow the client to retrieve it. For protected streams, confirm that authorization is valid.
- The playlist loads but playback stalls: Verify that every referenced segment exists at the expected URL and is delivered successfully. For live streams, confirm the media playlist is being updated as expected.
- Playback starts but a rendition switch fails: Check that alternate playlists and their segments are available and consistently packaged. Confirm that the target player supports the relevant codecs and formats.
- Audio, video, or tracks fall out of alignment: Review segment timing and alignment across audio and video playlists, along with the packaging system’s output.
- Low-latency playback is not low-latency: Confirm that production tools, playlists, server or CDN configuration, and player all support the LL-HLS features being used. If the delivery path does not support the required configuration, a player may use regular-latency HLS instead.
- Protected playback fails: Check authentication, key retrieval and handling, encryption compatibility, secure delivery, and client support.
Use Apple’s current authoring guidance for platform-specific requirements, and validate generated playlists and segments with tools suited to the target platforms. HLS documentation and platform requirements evolve, so an old sample playlist should not be treated as universally correct.
When HLS is the right concept—and when it is not
HLS is a delivery protocol, not a complete streaming production system. It describes playlist-and-segment delivery over HTTP; it does not supply the encoder, create the media package, provide the CDN, guarantee codec compatibility, or promise a particular latency. When assessing an HLS setup, establish whether the use case is live or VOD, whether ordinary or low-latency delivery is needed, which renditions and tracks must be available, what target clients support, and how media and any encryption keys will be delivered.
If your question is instead how to keep a prerecorded video continuously live on YouTube, that is a different workflow from implementing HLS infrastructure. StreamNeo is a separate cloud service that loops uploaded videos to a YouTube channel; it does not implement or explain HLS as a protocol.
