Gooning is internet slang for prolonged masturbation, often involving pornography and edging—the practice of delaying orgasm. It is not a medical diagnosis. Whether the behavior is a concern depends less on a specific duration or frequency than on whether it feels hard to control or causes distress or problems in daily life.
What does “gooning” mean?
The term is commonly used online for an extended period of masturbation, often with pornography, intended to sustain arousal or create an absorbed, trance-like state. Usage is informal and can vary; there is no formal clinical definition of gooning. AddictionHelp.com’s overview of the term describes it as slang, not a diagnosis.
Because it is slang, the word alone does not tell you whether someone has a health problem. Masturbation is generally a common, normal behavior, and the term does not make it inherently harmful. Cleveland Clinic’s guidance on masturbation likewise treats it as normal while noting that individual concerns can arise.
When might the behavior be a problem?
There is no established safe-or-unsafe time limit or frequency threshold for gooning. More useful questions are whether a person feels able to choose when to stop and whether the behavior is interfering with health, work, relationships, or other responsibilities.

These are reasons to consider getting support, not a checklist that proves a diagnosis. Mayo Clinic describes compulsive sexual behavior in terms of intense urges or behaviors that are difficult to control and cause distress or problems in life; it also cautions against treating frequency alone as the measure. Mayo Clinic’s symptoms and causes overview gives further examples.
Is gooning a clinical diagnosis?
No. “Gooning addiction” is not an official diagnosis. Mayo Clinic notes that compulsive sexual behavior is not listed as a diagnosis in the DSM-5-TR. It also explains that the World Health Organization’s ICD-11 includes compulsive sexual behaviour disorder as an impulse-control disorder. These classification details concern compulsive sexual behavior, not the slang term itself. Mayo Clinic’s diagnosis and treatment page discusses the distinction.
Possible physical effects
Rough or prolonged friction can leave skin chafed or tender. Cleveland Clinic says minor effects from masturbation generally heal within a day or two; that is general masturbation advice, not evidence of a distinct gooning-related injury. Lubricant may reduce friction during manual stimulation, but it is not a treatment for loss of control or a guarantee against injury.
Persistent pain, an injury, or concerns about sexual function are reasons to contact a healthcare professional. The sources cited here do not establish that gooning inevitably causes erectile dysfunction, permanent loss of sensation, infertility, brain damage, or relationship failure.

Getting help if it feels out of control
If the behavior is causing distress, disrupting daily life, or damaging a relationship, a healthcare provider or mental-health professional with experience in compulsive sexual behavior can help assess what is going on. Mayo Clinic lists psychotherapy, including cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT), among possible approaches. Therapy may be individual, group, or couples-based, depending on a person’s needs. Mayo Clinic’s treatment overview describes these options.
