In the 2019 Call of Duty: Modern Warfare reboot, Gaz is Sergeant Kyle Garrick, a British Army veteran who passed SAS selection and worked in domestic counter-terrorism. He meets Captain John Price during the response to an attack in London and joins Task Force 141 after the campaign’s London and Urzikstan operations. This is the reboot-era Gaz, not a merging of characters from different Modern Warfare continuities.
Who is Gaz in Modern Warfare?
Gaz is the nickname of Kyle Garrick. Activision’s character profiles identify him as a sergeant and SAS veteran who works with Price in the 2019 campaign. The character and his service history are fictional lore from the game, not a biography of a real soldier. Activision’s 2020 profile introduces Garrick as part of the Coalition.
What did Gaz do before joining Price’s team?
According to Activision’s 2019 campaign biography, Garrick enlisted in the British Army in 2014 and served four years with the Queen’s Lancashire Regiment before passing SAS selection. The profile lists assignments in Northern Ireland, Bosnia, Turkey, Iraq, Afghanistan and Syria. It also says his work included counter-terrorism operations and disrupting opium supply lines and poppy production.
After his military deployments, the biography places him on the SAS domestic counter-terrorism program, working with metropolitan police forces. Activision describes his strengths as target elimination, demolitions, weapons tactics, covert surveillance and VIP protection, while emphasizing judgment and mental resilience as well as physical preparation.

How does Gaz meet Captain Price?
Garrick’s campaign story begins during the response to Al-Qatala’s attack at Piccadilly Circus in London. He works with Price against domestic terrorists, then supports the broader effort against Al-Qatala leaders known as the Butcher and the Wolf, as well as General Roman Barkov. Activision’s character profile summarizes his role in these events.
The point of the campaign arc is not simply that Gaz is an experienced operator: Price sees him as a capable partner whose judgment holds up under pressure. In Garrick’s official campaign biography, he says, “Everyone talks about the physical aspect of being in the SAS but my job is mostly mental. Give me a guy who’s got his mindset right over a guy who’s twice as fit any day of the week.” This is dialogue attributed to the fictional character, not a real-world SAS quotation.

How does Gaz join Task Force 141?
After the London and Urzikstan operations, Price recruits Garrick into Task Force 141. The official Call of Duty story recap describes Price requesting personnel files for Garrick, Soap and Ghost as the new task force takes shape. That makes Gaz one of the team’s founding core in this continuity.

The official Modern Warfare II launch overview calls the 2022 campaign an indirect continuation of the 2019 story and sets it three years after Task Force 141’s formation. It identifies Garrick as the former SAS sergeant who worked with Price in Modern Warfare. This establishes the bridge to the next campaign without making its later events part of Gaz’s origin story.
