The controversy surrounding Chip and Joanna Gaines began when their Magnolia series Back to the Frontier featured married dads Jason Hanna and Joe Riggs raising a family on screen. Some conservative Christian commentators objected to the casting on religious grounds. Chip Gaines responded by urging people to talk, listen and learn. The documented dispute described here centers on the initial reaction in July 2025.

What is Back to the Frontier?

Back to the Frontier is an eight-part Magnolia Network reality series that premiered July 10, 2025, with Max named as its streaming destination in the official announcement. The show places three modern families in an 1880s-style homesteading challenge. They work to reinforce shelters, raise livestock, gather food and manage supplies as they prepare for winter. Warner Bros. Discovery’s announcement describes the format and release; contemporaneous reporting gives further detail about the challenge.

What sparked the backlash?

Criticism focused on the show’s inclusion of Jason Hanna and Joe Riggs, a married same-sex couple, and their children. Franklin Graham called the casting “very disappointing.” Ed Vitagliano of the American Family Association said the program promoted what he called an “unbiblical view of human sexuality, marriage, and family.” Those are the critics’ religious judgments, not neutral descriptions of the family or of the series. The Los Angeles Times’ July 2025 report covered the featured family and the criticism.

What did Chip Gaines say?

On July 13, 2025, Chip Gaines posted on X, calling for conversation and understanding. The Los Angeles Times reproduced his post as: “Talk, ask qustns, listen.. maybe even learn. Too much to ask of modern American Christian culture. Judge 1st, understand later/never.” The published transcription spells “qustns” that way.

The same report quoted his follow-up: “It’s a sad sunday when ‘non believers’ have never been confronted with hate or vitriol until they are introduced to a modern American Christian.” These were Chip Gaines’s public comments; the reporting does not establish that Joanna Gaines made an equivalent statement about this dispute.

Why do people interpret the casting differently?

The disagreement is about what a faith-associated entertainment brand communicates when it features a same-sex family. Critics cited their interpretation of traditional Christian teaching on marriage and family. Other commentators stressed inclusion and the dignity of the featured family, or argued that the reaction reflected selective outrage and cultural polarization.

A July 25, 2025 Deseret News roundup describes arguments from both sides. These are competing interpretations of the casting and the response; they do not establish the Gaineses’ private beliefs or motives.
