The piece draws primarily on the Gospel of Matthew while also using material from Luke, Mark, and John. Its lively theatricality eventually gives way to the Last Supper and Crucifixion, so the show’s central movement is both joyful and serious: a group learns how to live together, then how to continue after Jesus is gone.
Conceived and originally directed by John Michael Tebelak, with music and new lyrics by Stephen Schwartz, Godspell is less a conventional biography of Jesus than a theatrical retelling of teachings, parables, and the Passion story. Understanding that form explains why its comedy, pop-inflected score, audience interaction, and religious material all belong to the same design.
What happens in Godspell?
The musical begins with a group of people assembling and encountering Jesus. Instead of presenting a realistic historical setting, the production invites the ensemble to demonstrate Jesus’ teachings through theatrical play. Performers may use comic routines, games, direct address, and songs to turn parables into scenes the audience can see and feel.
Among the stories dramatized are the Good Samaritan and the Prodigal Son. These episodes are not isolated illustrations inserted into an unrelated plot. They are the way the group learns: each parable becomes an exercise in listening, acting, arguing, forgiving, or imagining another person’s point of view.

As the performance progresses, the atmosphere changes. The early material is energetic and often funny, but the action moves toward the Last Supper and the Crucifixion. The ending therefore does not leave the audience in the mood of a revue. It asks what happens to a community after the person who gathered it is no longer physically present.
How the story is structured
An ensemble meets Jesus
The first dramatic event is collective rather than individual: people come together. Jesus becomes the focus of that gathering, but the musical keeps attention on the group’s changing relationships as much as on his words. The ensemble is not merely background support. Its members are the audience’s route into the material, responding with curiosity, humor, resistance, and growing commitment.
Parables become theatrical games
Rather than moving through a scene-by-scene account of Jesus’ life, Godspell uses selected teachings and parables as performance events. A story such as the Good Samaritan can be played as a comic routine; another can be shaped through movement, song, or a direct exchange with the house. The form makes interpretation visible: the cast does not simply report a lesson, but discovers how to perform it together.
The play turns toward the Passion
The tonal shift toward the Last Supper and Crucifixion gives the musical its dramatic destination. The earlier games have built trust and fellowship, making the later loss consequential. The Passion material is not an unrelated final tableau; it tests whether the community formed in play can survive grief and separation.
What is the musical about beneath its plot?
Stephen Schwartz’s description, reproduced by Carol de Giere, identifies the central arc as “a group of disparate people slowly become a community built around one charismatic individual (Jesus), who then leaves them, and they have to carry on as a community without him.” That sentence explains why the show can feel episodic while still having a coherent story. The connective thread is the group’s transformation.
At the beginning, the performers are separate people. By the end, they have shared stories, songs, arguments, jokes, and a crisis. Their task is not simply to remember Jesus as a historical figure. It is to carry forward a way of being together after his departure. The musical’s deepest subject is therefore communal responsibility: how instruction becomes practice, and how a temporary gathering becomes an enduring fellowship.

Community is built through participation
The community in Godspell is created by doing things together. The cast plays, sings, stages parables, and addresses one another in public. This matters theatrically and thematically. A lesson is not complete when it has been spoken; it has to be enacted by people who must depend on one another.
The author-resource article about the show notes that performers may face theatergoers or walk through the aisles. Such choices can break the fourth wall and enlarge the community beyond the stage. The audience is no longer only watching a group learn. It is being treated as part of the room in which that learning occurs.
Departure is the test of the group
Jesus’ departure prevents the musical from becoming a simple celebration of charismatic leadership. The community has to function without the person who first organized it. That structural choice gives the Passion ending its practical question: can the values taught in the parables survive when no single figure is present to enforce them?
Which Bible sources does Godspell use?
Godspell is based on the New Testament Gospels, chiefly Matthew. The composer’s explanation points to Matthew because it supplies a larger proportion of the material, including much of the Sermon on the Mount. It is not, however, a dramatization of Matthew alone.
The show also draws quotations or parables from Luke, Mark, and John. A production may therefore contain familiar passages that readers associate with different Gospel writers. Calling it “Matthew-based” is accurate as a description of emphasis, but it should not be taken to mean that every line comes from Matthew or that the musical reproduces one Gospel in sequence.
Why the source is adapted rather than reproduced
Much of the text comes from the Bible, while some lines were developed with the original cast in rehearsal, according to the Godspell FAQ. That collaborative history helps explain the show’s conversational quality. Biblical language is placed beside comic timing, theatrical improvisation, and contemporary musical idioms instead of being presented as a continuous scripture reading.

Why is it called Godspell?
The title uses an archaic English spelling of “gospel,” a word meaning “good news.” The subtitle points toward Matthew because Matthew is the principal source, while the initial “The” was dropped before the Off-Broadway opening. The name therefore signals both the musical’s religious subject and its deliberately old-fashioned, literary relationship to the word “gospel.”
Who created Godspell?
John Michael Tebelak conceived the piece and originally directed it. Stephen Schwartz supplied the music and new lyrics for the final version. Describing Tebelak only as a conventional book writer would miss the way the text was assembled: biblical passages were combined with material shaped in rehearsal alongside the original performers.
Tebelak’s work developed from student theater at Carnegie Mellon and an experimental La MaMa staging in New York. Schwartz was then asked to create a new score for the final form. The show opened Off-Broadway at the Cherry Lane Theatre on May 17, 1971, a date reported by Carol de Giere in her production-history account.

| Concept and original direction | John Michael Tebelak |
| Music and new lyrics | Stephen Schwartz |
| Primary biblical emphasis | The Gospel of Matthew |
| Additional Gospel material | Luke, Mark, and John |
| Off-Broadway opening | May 17, 1971, at the Cherry Lane Theatre |
How does the tone mix comedy with religious seriousness?
The show’s tone is intentionally double-sided. Music Theatre International describes games, storytelling, comic timing, and a score that moves from pop toward vaudeville, while also identifying kindness, tolerance, and love as messages carried through the piece. The comic form is not evidence that the religious material is being treated as meaningless. It is the method by which the ensemble makes difficult teachings approachable and shared.

It represents a way of seeing that can make moral and spiritual questions newly available to the group.
That innocence has limits. The final movement toward the Last Supper and Crucifixion introduces betrayal, suffering, and absence. The production’s challenge is to let the audience feel the loss without pretending that the earlier joy was false. The emotional contrast is part of the design.

What songs are in Godspell?
Song lists vary by version and source, so no single sequence should be assumed for every recording or production. The score is associated with several widely recognized numbers:
| Song | Place in the documented score |
|---|---|
| “Prepare Ye” | One of the listed numbers used to open the musical world and gather attention around Jesus. |
| “Day By Day” | Identified by Music Theatre International as the international hit associated with the show. |
| “All for the Best” | Part of the established song list. |
| “All Good Gifts” | Part of the established song list. |
| “Turn Back, O Man” | Part of the established song list. |
| “By My Side” | Part of the established song list. |
| “On the Willows” | Part of the established song list. |
| “Beautiful City” | Part of the established song list. |
These titles should be treated as a guide to the musical’s repertoire, not as a guarantee that every edition uses identical placement, cuts, or sequence. If you are listening to a cast recording, identify the production or edition first.

What are the main themes?
Kindness, tolerance, and love
Music Theatre International names kindness, tolerance, and love as central messages. The parables give those words dramatic form by placing characters in situations where another person’s dignity, need, or forgiveness becomes the issue. The musical asks the ensemble to practice those values rather than merely praise them.
The value of play
Play creates a shared language for the performers. It lowers the distance between teacher and learner, allows a serious idea to be tested in public, and keeps the group flexible. Nathan’s description of childhood innocence captures this aspect of the show without reducing it to childishness. The performers are using imagination as a method of moral attention.
Learning together
Because the cast performs the teachings collectively, knowledge is shown as a social process. One character’s response affects another’s performance; a joke can expose resistance; a parable can change the way the group treats someone who seemed peripheral. The audience watches a community form through repeated acts of listening and response.
Continuity after a leader leaves
The most consequential theme arrives with Jesus’ departure. The group must decide whether its relationships and practices have become strong enough to continue. Godspell is therefore concerned not only with conversion or belief, but with succession, memory, and responsibility.

How does audience interaction affect the meaning?
Some productions keep performers facing outward, entering aisles, or addressing theatergoers directly. These choices make the audience part of the social space represented onstage. Instead of observing a distant biblical past, viewers are invited to recognize themselves as another gathering of people hearing stories and deciding how to respond.
Audience interaction can vary considerably. A production may be intimate and immersive, or it may keep the action within a more conventional proscenium frame. The underlying idea remains the same: the musical’s community is porous. It can include spectators without requiring every production to use identical staging.
How do versions and productions differ?
Music Theatre International identifies separate versions, including the original Off-Broadway version, a 2012 version, and Godspell Jr. They should not be treated as interchangeable scripts. Song lists, available roles, edits, and staging expectations can differ.
| Version or reference point | What to check |
|---|---|
| Original Off-Broadway version | The version described on the current MTI page; it preserves the production context most closely associated with the 1971 opening. |
| 2012 version | Confirm its specific script and song order rather than assuming the original sequence. |
| Godspell Jr. | Check the junior edition’s cuts, running material, roles, and performance requirements. |
Staging also changes the audience’s experience. Two productions can use the same core material yet feel different because of costume, spatial arrangement, degree of direct address, and how the ensemble handles the shift from comedy to the Passion story.

What Godspell is—and is not
- It is a musical retelling of teachings and parables, not a documentary-style reconstruction of Jesus’ biography.
- It is primarily rooted in Matthew but incorporates material from all four canonical Gospels.
- It is an ensemble piece in which games and songs are part of the storytelling mechanism, not interruptions between dramatic scenes.
- It is explicitly Christian in source and in its movement toward the Last Supper and Crucifixion, even though its theatrical vocabulary includes pop, vaudeville, comedy, and direct audience contact.
- It is not identical across all licensed editions, so a production’s version should be identified before comparing its songs or structure with another.
A concise viewing guide
- Notice who is separate at the beginning. The opening group provides the baseline for the community that develops.
- Watch how each parable is embodied. The performance style—games, jokes, movement, or direct address—shows how the ensemble is processing the teaching.
- Track changes in trust. The musical’s plot is carried by relationships among performers as much as by the individual stories.
- Listen for the tonal turn. The move from exuberant play toward the Last Supper and Crucifixion changes the stakes of everything that came before.
- Ask what remains after Jesus leaves. The final question concerns the group’s ability to continue as a community, not simply its ability to repeat his words.
Why the musical’s form matters
Godspell makes interpretation visible. A conventional narrative might present a finished lesson through dialogue and plot. This musical shows people trying to understand a lesson by performing it. Their mistakes, comic impulses, and changes in attention become part of the meaning.
That design also explains the show’s unusual balance of accessibility and theological seriousness. The audience can enter through a catchy song or a comic bit, then encounter a question about mercy, tolerance, or communal obligation. The entertainment is not separate from the argument; it is the route by which the argument reaches the room.
Where to look for deeper background
Stephen Schwartz’s official work page provides the composer’s account of the show, its Gospel basis, synopsis, songs, and recordings. Music Theatre International’s page for the original version describes the production method, themes, and available material. The Godspell FAQ discusses the title, Gospel sources, Tebelak’s role, and the collaborative development of the text.
For a fuller production history, Carol de Giere’s author and Godspell Today pages provide the chronology of Tebelak’s development, the 1971 opening date, staging observations, and the attributed quotations from Schwartz and Nathan. The quotations should be understood through that attribution chain: de Giere reproduces Schwartz’s and Nathan’s words rather than presenting herself as their source.

The Bottom Line
Godspell is about a group becoming a community through Jesus’ teachings, playful performance, and shared song, then confronting the responsibility of carrying that community forward after his departure. Its primary source is Matthew, but its language reaches across the four Gospels; its tone is comic and inviting, yet its story ends with the Last Supper and Crucifixion. The combination is the point: faith is presented as something learned, enacted, and sustained together.
