Coachella, formally the Coachella Valley Music and Arts Festival, is an annual music and arts festival organized by Goldenvoice at the Empire Polo Club in Indio, California. It mixes performers from many genres with large-scale art installations, food and other activities, and it runs over two three-day weekends each spring. Each weekend requires its own pass, and camping and lodging are sold separately from festival admission.
Where and when it takes place
The festival is held at the 78-acre Empire Polo Club, 81-800 Avenue 51, Indio, California 92201, in the Southern California desert. Goldenvoice describes it as an annual event, and the official pages show the same two-weekend format each year, with three days per weekend.

Dates, lineups, set times, venue rules and travel information can change from year to year. Confirm them on the official Coachella site before you book anything.
What happens at the festival
Coachella combines multi-genre music performances with commissioned large-scale art installations and returning works that transform the festival field. Food, activities and community are presented as part of the experience alongside the music. The organizer describes both weekends as planned to offer the same lineup, art, food and activities.

That plan does not mean you can see every performance on either weekend. Sets overlap, and some areas have limited capacity. The festival advises planning ahead for the acts that matter most to you, and the lineup and set times remain subject to change.
Passes, entry and age rules
A festival pass is a wristband valid for one full weekend. Attendees are required to register in the official festival mobile app, which provides updates and lets you build a custom lineup.

- Weekend scope: A pass covers one weekend only. If you want both, you need to buy access for each.
- Age policy (2026): The official information described the event as all ages, with children five and under admitted free with General Admission. Check the rules for the year you are attending.
- Camping age limit: On-site camping is generally limited to people 18 and over unless they are accompanied by a parent or legal guardian.
Camping, lodging and getting there

Day visitors and travel
If you do not camp, you can use day parking, official shuttle options or lodging. The organizer publishes traffic, parking and arrival information for the venue, and warns that routes and parking conditions may change on the day.

The official documentary page states that the first Coachella was held in 1999, and the official past-festivals archive begins with that year. The archive lists no editions for 2020 or 2021.

Attendance figures for the early years come from a March 2024 court complaint, not from an official count. The complaint alleges that the 1999 festival drew about 25,000 people and that attendance aggregated across the multi-day event has reached nearly 750,000 per year. These are claims made in a legal filing and have not been independently audited, so they should not be read as current official attendance.
