It is not simply private Christian faith, church attendance, patriotism, or support for considering moral values in politics. The term covers several related claims, and scholars and polling organizations define it differently.
What Christian nationalism means
In the analytic sense used by political scientists and survey organizations, Christian nationalism treats Christianity as central to what the nation is, who fully belongs to it, or how government should exercise authority. A person expressing this view might support declaring the country a Christian nation, grounding laws in Christian values, or giving Christianity a formally favored role in public institutions.
That definition describes a relationship among three things: religion, national identity, and political power. It does not classify every Christian, evangelical, religious voter, or citizen who wants faith-informed arguments in public debate. Someone can believe that Christianity has shaped a country’s culture while opposing an official religion. Someone else can support a Christian national identity as a political program without using the label for themselves.
There is no single definition accepted by all scholars, churches, or survey organizations. An Oxford scholarly overview distinguishes nationalism from patriotism while emphasizing that the concept remains disputed. The safest way to interpret the term is therefore to identify the specific belief or policy being discussed instead of treating “Christian nationalist” as a universal self-description or a diagnosis.

Christian nationalism and Christian patriotism are not the same
Christian patriotism can mean loving one’s country, serving its people, honoring its history, and drawing personal moral motivation from Christian faith. None of those actions, by themselves, requires Christianity to define national membership or direct state authority. Christian nationalism adds a political claim about the nation’s religious identity and the proper place of government.
| Question | Christian patriotism | Christian nationalism |
|---|---|---|
| Basis of belonging | Civic membership is open to citizens of different religions and to people with no religion. | Christian identity may be treated as a defining marker of who is truly or fully part of the nation. |
| Role of government | Government protects equal citizenship while individuals bring their faith to civic life. | Government is expected to recognize, promote, or privilege Christianity in law or public institutions. |
| Meaning of religious participation | Prayer, worship, charity, voting, military service, or public advocacy can be personal or community activities. | Religious commitment is connected to a program for aligning national identity and political authority with Christianity. |
| How the claim is identified | Often through a person’s own description of faith and country. | Often through answers to questions about official religion, Christian foundations, Christian membership, or Christian control of society. |
These are explanatory contrasts, not a perfect two-sided test. A Christian may hold patriotic and nationalist ideas at the same time, reject the label while supporting some nationalist policies, or move between positions on different issues. The key difference is whether Christianity is being proposed as a privileged basis for national identity or government, rather than merely as a source of personal conviction.
What beliefs are commonly associated with the term?
The Public Religion Research Institute (PRRI) uses five statements to measure Christian nationalism in its 2025 American Values Atlas. The statements are an instrument created by PRRI, not a universally agreed diagnostic. They ask whether respondents agree that:
- The government should declare the United States a Christian nation.
- U.S. laws should be based on Christian values.
- If the United States moves away from its Christian foundations, it will cease to be a country.
- Being Christian is important to being truly American.
- God has called Christians to exercise dominion over all areas of American society.
These questions combine legal preference, cultural identity, historical interpretation, and a claim about religious authority over society. Agreement with one statement does not necessarily mean agreement with all five. That is why the resulting categories should be read as positions on PRRI’s scale, not as a count of people who have adopted a particular label.

| PRRI category | Share reported in the 2025 American Values Atlas | What the category represents |
|---|---|---|
| Adherents | 11% | Strong alignment with the Christian-nationalism statements on PRRI’s five-question scale. |
| Sympathizers | 21% | Some support for the statements, but less consistent or intense agreement than Adherents. |
| Skeptics | 37% | Limited agreement or uncertainty about the claims. |
| Rejecters | 27% | Broad rejection of the claims measured by the scale. |
Those figures come from 22,000 interviews in PRRI’s 2025 data and were published in 2026. They describe how respondents answered PRRI’s questions; they are not a headcount of people who publicly call themselves Christian nationalists.

What Americans say about Christianity in public life
Pew Research Center asked a different set of questions in a survey of U.S. adults conducted in February 2024. The questions separated support for an official religion from support for Christian moral influence without legal establishment. Pew reported that 13% favored declaring Christianity the official national religion, 44% favored promoting Christian moral values without declaring an official religion, and 39% opposed both options. These responses are policy preferences, not PRRI’s four-category scale, so the percentages should not be combined or treated as interchangeable.
Pew also found that 45% of adults had heard at least something about Christian nationalism. In the same work, 5% expressed a favorable view and 25% an unfavorable view. Familiarity with a term and an opinion about it measure different things: a respondent may have heard the phrase without adopting a position, or may hold a strong view despite limited knowledge of academic definitions.
The distinction matters because “Christian influence” can refer to very different arrangements. Supporting privately chosen religious charities, allowing religious arguments in ordinary political debate, and favoring a government declaration of Christianity are not equivalent positions. A clear account states which one is under discussion.

Why the definition is contested
People who have heard the phrase do not use it in one consistent way. In an open-ended analysis, Pew Research Center recorded responses describing Christian nationalism as Christian dominance, a larger role for religion in politics, exclusion, racism, authoritarianism, or a positive influence of faith and morals. Those answers show why arguments about the term can become arguments about different subjects.
For one speaker, the phrase may be a neutral description of a movement seeking Christian political authority. For another, it may be a criticism of exclusionary or authoritarian politics. A third person may use it approvingly to describe a belief that Christian principles should guide the nation. Reporting should therefore identify the observable claim—such as support for an official religion or a Christian definition of citizenship—before applying the broader label.

Christianity, the founding, and the historical argument
Historical discussion usually combines three separate questions:
- Did Christianity influence people, institutions, and political arguments in the founding era?
- Was the United States legally established as a Christian state?
- Should the government today privilege Christianity?
The first question is about historical influence. The second is about constitutional and legal status. The third is a present-day policy choice. A “yes” to the first does not automatically answer either of the others.
An Associated Press historical report describes disputes over founding-era claims and notes that the Constitution does not name Christianity as an official religion. Historians disagree with contemporary assertions that the country was founded straightforwardly as a Christian nation, while also rejecting the opposite simplification that religion played no role in early American life. Political actors today use competing origin stories to support arguments about national identity.
Eric McDaniel, an associate professor of government at the University of Texas, described the appeal of one such story this way: “The idea of Christian nationhood fills Americans’ need for an origin story, a belief that ‘we’ve come here for something special, and that we’re here for God’s work.’” The quotation, reported by the Associated Press, explains why founding narratives can carry emotional and political force even when historians dispute how selectively those narratives are assembled.
A careful historical account attributes claims to the people making them and distinguishes religious presence from legal establishment. It does not turn the fact that many founders were influenced by Christian traditions into proof that the United States had an official Christian identity, nor does it erase religion from the country’s history.

How to evaluate a claim about Christian nationalism
When a speech, documentary, survey, or political platform uses the term, ask the following questions:
- What is the proposed role of government? Is the argument for an official religion, preferential treatment, Christian moral reasoning in ordinary debate, or something else?
- Who counts as fully American? Does the speaker describe citizenship in civic terms, or imply that Christian identity is necessary for national belonging?
- Is the claim descriptive or prescriptive? Saying Christianity influenced history is different from saying the state should enforce Christian authority now.
- What evidence is being used? A person’s self-description, a five-question survey scale, and a historical account answer different questions.
- Are minority rights and religious pluralism addressed? A proposal that gives one religion political privilege has consequences for citizens of other faiths and for people with no religion.
This approach prevents two common errors: labeling any public Christian expression as nationalism, and accepting a sweeping claim about Christian nationhood without asking what legal or political changes it would require.

“Every Christian is a Christian nationalist.”
False. The term concerns a political relationship between Christianity, national identity, and authority. Millions of Christians reject an official religion, support equal citizenship across faiths, or understand patriotism as service rather than religious control.
“Christian nationalism is just patriotism with a Bible verse.”
That misses the issue of privilege. Patriotism can coexist with religious pluralism. Christian nationalism, as measured by the claims above, asks Christianity to define the nation or receive a special governing role.
“Any support for Christian moral values proves the full ideology.”
Pew’s 2024 findings show why that conclusion is too broad: supporting promotion of Christian moral values without an official religion was measured separately from supporting a formal national religion. People can agree with one position and reject the other.

“The label is a precise self-identification.”
Many people encountered in surveys do not use the label themselves, and organizations classify responses differently. PRRI’s Adherent, Sympathizer, Skeptic, and Rejecter categories describe answers to its five statements, not a universal identity test.
Why the distinction matters
The difference between Christian patriotism and Christian nationalism affects debates over citizenship, education, public ceremonies, lawmaking, religious liberty, and the meaning of national history. If Christianity is treated as one tradition among many in a pluralistic civic order, people may argue from their faith while accepting equal political status for others. If Christianity is treated as the nation’s defining identity or governing authority, the debate shifts toward who belongs, whose beliefs receive institutional preference, and whether dissent is viewed as disloyal.
Using precise language makes those stakes visible. Instead of asking whether someone is “religious enough” or “patriotic enough,” ask whether they support an official Christian identity, Christian control of law, a Christian test for belonging, or simply the freedom to express Christian convictions in public. Those are different positions with different consequences.

Christian nationalism is best understood as a contested political vision that gives Christianity a privileged connection to national identity or government. Christian patriotism can involve deep religious conviction and love of country without making Christianity a condition of belonging or a source of special state authority. Because definitions and measurements vary, the most accurate explanation names the specific belief, policy, or survey instrument at issue.
