A higher video bitrate can preserve more visual detail, but it also uses more upload bandwidth—and only helps if your encoder and internet connection can sustain it. The right setting depends on your platform, codec, resolution, frame rate, and the content you stream.
What bitrate means for a live stream
Video bitrate is the data rate allocated to encoded video, usually measured in kilobits per second (kbps) or megabits per second (Mbps). Audio uses bandwidth too, so the total stream rate is higher than the video bitrate alone. Bitrate is neither resolution nor a direct quality score: it is one part of the path from encoding to viewer playback.
With other settings held comparable, giving an encoder more data can reduce visible compression and preserve detail. But a higher target needs more upload capacity. If your connection cannot reliably carry it, the stream may become unstable or drop frames. Resolution, frame rate, codec, encoder performance, image complexity, and motion also shape the result. A fast-moving scene can be harder to encode cleanly than a relatively still one at the same settings.
How to choose a bitrate
- Choose the platform and output. Decide on the service, codec, resolution, and frame rate first; bitrate recommendations are specific to that combination.
- Check the platform’s current encoder guidance. Use the recommendation for your selected configuration rather than copying a number from another service.
- Check sustainable upload bandwidth. YouTube says total stream bitrate must not exceed available upload bandwidth and recommends leaving 20% room. Shared networks and connection fluctuations can reduce what is available to your stream.
- Configure and test. Use a supported encoder and rate-control mode, then test privately or unlisted if your platform allows it. Include representative movement and audio, and monitor stream health.
- Adjust if needed. If the encoder or connection cannot sustain the target, reduce bitrate, resolution, or frame rate. A lower, stable output is preferable to a higher target that causes interruptions.
This sequence follows platform and software guidance; it is not a universal formula. OBS notes that its video-bitrate setting depends on upload speed and the streaming service.

Published bitrate examples
The following figures are platform guidance or example configurations—not guarantees of picture quality. YouTube and Twitch recommendations are not interchangeable. Check the relevant live documentation again before a broadcast because platform settings can change; these values reflect guidance observed on October 3, 2026.
| Platform and configuration | Published video bitrate | Context |
|---|---|---|
| YouTube Live, H.264, 1080p at 60 fps | 17 Mbps | YouTube’s live-ingest recommendation; its guidance also lists a minimum bitrate. YouTube encoder settings |
| YouTube Live, H.264, 720p at 30 fps | 8 Mbps | YouTube’s live-ingest recommendation. YouTube encoder settings |
| Twitch, 1080p at 60 fps | 6000 kbps | Example encoder configuration in Twitch’s guide. Twitch Broadcasting Guidelines |
| Twitch, 720p at 30 fps | 3000 kbps | Example encoder configuration in Twitch’s guide. Twitch Broadcasting Guidelines |
YouTube’s guidance gives distinct bitrate ranges for H.264 and AV1/H.265, so do not apply the H.264 examples above to another codec without checking the table. Twitch frames its examples as a balance among content, connection, and hardware.

YouTube Live settings to check
YouTube’s current encoder guidance lists H.264, H.265/HEVC, and AV1 for RTMP/RTMPS, supports up to 60 fps, recommends constant bitrate (CBR), and recommends a two-second keyframe interval that should not exceed four seconds. Consult the YouTube encoder settings guide for the recommended rate for your exact codec and output.
Before an event, YouTube recommends testing and monitoring stream health. Match the test’s movement and audio to what you expect to broadcast; a static test screen may not reveal how demanding real footage is. OBS likewise advises that the bitrate setting depends on both your upload speed and streaming service. See the OBS streaming guidelines.

Why a stream can look pixelated or break up
Pixelation during fast gameplay or other movement can mean the bitrate is too low for the selected codec and output, but the symptom alone does not identify the cause. Check the target bitrate against platform guidance, then review the connection and encoding path.
- Insufficient or unstable upload: Confirm that the connection can sustain the total stream rate with headroom. Reduce the output demand if it cannot.
- High resolution or frame rate for the available capacity: Try lowering one or both settings rather than insisting on the highest output.
- Encoder load: Check whether the chosen encoder can process the output smoothly. Twitch notes that x264 uses CPU resources, while GPU encoding can use dedicated encoder hardware.
- Content complexity: Test representative motion and detail; the same bitrate may not look equally clean across different footage.
For network-related dropped frames, Twitch’s guidance prioritizes stability over pushing quality to the point where the connection struggles: Twitch Broadcasting Guidelines.

What viewers receive may differ from your source
The stream you send to a platform is the ingest feed; a viewer may be offered a transcoded version at a different resolution, frame rate, or bitrate. OBS describes transcoding as creating alternate feeds so viewers can choose playback suited to their device or connection. Its documentation says YouTube transcodes all streams and describes Twitch access as tiered, but the article is dated June 9, 2021; verify current availability rather than assuming every stream or viewer has the same options. Or let it run in the cloud
If your goal is to keep uploaded video looping on YouTube, rather than stream live camera footage, StreamNeo runs the stream from the cloud: upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. Nothing has to stay on at home. Each slot streams your upload as made, up to 4K 60fps, at one price per slot; StreamNeo does not re-encode it. It can automatically recover if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card, and the monthly price is $9.99 per month. StreamNeo streams to YouTube only and plays uploaded videos; it does not stream from a camera. Start your free day with StreamNeo.
