Apple Music AutoMix is an adaptive song-transition feature introduced with iOS 26. Instead of applying the same fixed crossfade to every track, it analyzes consecutive songs and chooses a transition that may use beat matching, time stretching, silence removal, a simpler crossfade, or no transition at all.
It is designed for supported Apple devices playing eligible Apple Music catalogue content. AutoMix is not a DJ editor, a new playlist type, or an AI-generated remix: it changes how songs connect during playback without permanently altering the original audio files.
What does Apple Music AutoMix do?
AutoMix connects songs more continuously, with the aim of making a playlist, station, workout mix, or background session feel more like a DJ-curated sequence. Different pairs of songs can receive different treatments, rather than every track receiving an identical fade.

For one pairing, AutoMix might align the beats of the outgoing and incoming tracks. For another, it might remove silence and use a straightforward overlap. If the songs do not make musical sense together, they may play normally with little or no transition.

That last behavior is important: AutoMix being enabled does not guarantee an audible blend between every song. Apple presents it as an adaptive system, not a permanent command to overlap all tracks.
How AutoMix works
Apple says AutoMix uses AI to analyze music and combines beat matching with time stretching to create transitions. Apple has not published the complete algorithm, its exact audio-analysis pipeline, universal transition lengths, or whether every decision is performed entirely on the device.
Beat matching
Beat matching aligns rhythmic elements in two songs so that their beats are less likely to clash during the handoff. This can make a transition feel more deliberate than simply lowering one song while raising the next.
Time stretching
Time stretching changes the timing or duration of part of a track without simply playing the entire song faster or slower. Apple does not disclose the precise sections or limits used by AutoMix.
Silence removal
AutoMix may reduce silence at the end or beginning of a track when that helps maintain flow. As a result, listeners may occasionally hear a song enter sooner than expected or miss a quiet gap they would hear during ordinary playback.
Adaptive fallback
AutoMix can choose a less elaborate transition, use an ordinary crossfade, or make no transition when the music, playback context, or content type is unsuitable. This is why a quiet acoustic recording followed by an energetic electronic track may not produce a convincing DJ-style mix.
AutoMix does not create new instrumentals, remix complete songs, add cue points, or permanently edit downloaded audio. It is a playback-time feature affecting how eligible tracks play consecutively.

Choose AutoMix if you want the system to make musical transition decisions. Choose Crossfade if you prefer a predictable number of seconds for every handoff. Choose neither if preserving every intro, outro, and pause matters most.
Is AutoMix on by default?
Apple’s iPhone guide says AutoMix is on by default on iOS 26 or later when listening to music from the Apple Music catalogue. The feature can be disabled globally or switched off temporarily from the Up Next queue.
Listeners who prefer complete song boundaries may interpret AutoMix as skipping part of a track, particularly when it trims silence or overlaps the ending with the next song.
How to turn AutoMix on or off on iPhone
From Settings
- Open Settings.
- Tap Apps.
- Tap Music.
- Tap Song Transitions.
- Turn on Song Transitions.
- Select AutoMix.
To disable transitions altogether, turn off Song Transitions. To replace AutoMix with a fixed fade, select Crossfade instead.
From the Apple Music queue
- Open Apple Music and start playing a song.
- Tap the MiniPlayer.
- Tap Up Next.
- Tap the AutoMix button to switch the mode on or off.
The queue control is useful when you want to change the behavior temporarily without changing the main Music settings.

Compatible devices and requirements
AutoMix is not supported on every device that runs an Apple Music app. Apple’s documented compatibility currently includes:

Apple lists AutoMix as unavailable on Intel-based Macs, Apple TV, Apple Watch, HomePod, Android devices, and the Apple Music app for Windows. Availability can also vary by country or region.

What music does AutoMix support?
Apple describes AutoMix as dynamically transitioning between eligible Apple Music subscription catalogue tracks. Its support guidance identifies several situations where a dynamic transition may not occur:
- The album is being played sequentially.
- The genres or tempos are incompatible.
- The music was uploaded from your personal library.
- The tracks were purchased and downloaded from the iTunes Store.
Albums and some genres may therefore play without transitions even while AutoMix is enabled. A locally uploaded version of a song may also behave differently from an apparently identical version streamed from the Apple Music catalogue.
Apple’s public documentation does not provide a blanket guarantee for every combination of Dolby Atmos, lossless audio, CarPlay, Bluetooth device, or other output route. Those situations should not be treated as universally supported without confirmation for the specific software version and connection.
Why AutoMix may appear not to work
1. The tracks are not eligible
First check whether the songs are uploaded, purchased, downloaded from the iTunes Store, or coming from a source outside the Apple Music catalogue. These types of content may not receive dynamic AutoMix transitions.
2. You are playing an album in order
Apple says sequential album playback can avoid dynamic transitions. Try a playlist or station containing eligible catalogue tracks if you want to test AutoMix’s adaptive behavior.

3. The songs are musically unsuitable
Incompatible tempos or genres can cause AutoMix to choose a simple handoff or no overlap. This is expected behavior, not necessarily a malfunction.
4. AutoMix is disabled
Check Settings > Apps > Music > Song Transitions, then verify that AutoMix is selected. Also check the AutoMix button in Apple Music > MiniPlayer > Up Next.

AutoMix is not natively supported on Android, Windows, Apple TV, Apple Watch, HomePod, or Intel-based Macs. An Apple Music subscription cannot remove those platform restrictions.
6. You are using AirPlay
Apple’s iOS 26 release notes identified an issue in which AutoMix transitions might not work as expected while streaming with AirPlay. AirPlay output can therefore behave differently from direct playback on the iPhone. Apple’s release note is a documented caveat, not proof that every later iOS 26 update has the same issue.
For the most reliable diagnostic check, play the same eligible playlist directly from the iPhone before testing an AirPlay destination.
7. HDMI Passthrough is enabled on Mac
Apple says selecting Prefer HDMI Passthrough in Music playback settings prevents songs from transitioning. Turning HDMI Passthrough off restores crossfading and other song-transition behavior. See Apple’s Mac Music guide for the setting.

- Exercise playlists: fewer abrupt pauses can help maintain momentum.
- Parties and background music: continuous playback is often preferable to silence between tracks.
- Long commutes: automatic transitions reduce the need to manage playback.
- Curated playlists: compatible tempos and styles give AutoMix better material to work with.
- Listeners who dislike dead air: the feature can make ordinary playlists feel more continuous.
When AutoMix is a poor fit
- Full-album listening: the artist’s intended gaps, sequence, and track boundaries may matter.
- Classical, ambient, live, and cinematic recordings: silence can be part of the composition or performance.
- Long intros and outros: AutoMix may overlap or trim sections you specifically want to hear.
- Critical listening: listeners who dislike timing changes or overlapping tracks may prefer no transitions.
- Personal libraries: uploaded and purchased tracks have limited dynamic-transition support.
- AirPlay party setups: the output path may not preserve transitions reliably.
Does AutoMix alter or damage the original songs?
No cited Apple documentation indicates that AutoMix permanently modifies source files. It operates during playback, changing how consecutive tracks connect. Turning it off returns playback to the selected alternative or normal track boundaries.
Apple does not publish a general guarantee about sound quality, battery use, or every combination of lossless, Dolby Atmos, and external-output behavior. Those details should not be inferred from the existence of beat matching or time stretching.
Which option should you choose?
- Choose AutoMix for automatic, DJ-like continuity on supported Apple Music catalogue playlists.
- Choose Crossfade for a simple, adjustable, and predictable overlap.
- Turn transitions off when you want complete intros, outros, album sequencing, and silence between tracks.
AutoMix is best understood as a convenience feature for supported Apple Music playback, not as a replacement for professional DJ software. It does not provide manual beat grids, cue points, looping, live tempo control, or precise control over every transition.
