An HDMI capture card sends video and audio from a console or another HDMI source into computer software for streaming or recording. You probably do not need one to broadcast casually from a PS5 or Xbox, or to stream a game from the same PC you play on. It becomes useful when you want computer-based production controls for console gameplay, or when a second PC handles your stream.
What an HDMI capture card does
A capture card takes an HDMI signal from a source—such as a console or gaming PC—and makes it available to recording or streaming software on a computer. An external card usually connects to the computer over USB; an internal desktop card may use PCIe. The software can then use the card as a video source. Elgato’s capture-card explainer describes the device as a link between a console and a PC.
Many external cards also have HDMI passthrough: the source signal goes to a display so you can play on a TV or monitor while the computer receives a separate feed. Passthrough and capture are different outputs, with potentially different supported resolutions, frame rates and HDR behavior. A high-refresh or high-resolution passthrough specification does not guarantee that the card records or streams at the same quality. Elgato explains the distinction in its passthrough-versus-capture guide.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
| Setup | Do you need a card? | Why |
|---|---|---|
| PS5 or Xbox, casual broadcast | Usually no | Both have built-in streaming options. A card and computer software can offer more control over scenes and overlays. |
| Game and stream from one PC | Usually no | Streaming software can capture the game directly. A capture card does not perform the PC’s encoding or improve this setup. |
| Console gameplay into computer software | Often useful | The card brings the console’s HDMI feed into software for recording, streaming and production customization. |
| Dual-PC streaming | Often useful | The gaming PC sends its HDMI output to a card connected to the streaming PC, which receives the feed for software and encoding. |
| Nintendo Switch 2 gameplay through a computer workflow | Yes | Elgato’s guide, last updated July 15, 2026, says the Switch 2 has no built-in streaming option. |
For longer console recordings or layouts beyond a console’s built-in tools, a card can also bring footage into computer software. Recording limits vary by platform; check the current documentation for your console rather than relying on a general limit. These use-case distinctions are also covered in Elgato’s guide to whether you need a capture card, last updated July 15, 2026.
What to check before buying
- Capture resolution and frame rate: These set the maximum detail and motion rate of the feed sent to software.
- Passthrough resolution and frame rate: Check what the card can send to your display while capturing. Compare this separately from capture quality.
- HDR on each path: Confirm HDR support for passthrough and capture independently. Display-path HDR does not establish that the recorded feed is HDR at the same resolution or frame rate.
- Computer connection and requirements: Check USB generation or available PCIe slot, operating-system compatibility, processor and GPU requirements, and whether the manufacturer supports hubs.
- Source and setup compatibility: Make sure the source has HDMI output, identify any protected-content settings relevant to gameplay capture, and confirm whether the box includes the cables you need.
Example: Elgato Game Capture Neo
This model’s manual lists HDMI input, HDMI passthrough and USB 3.0, with up to 4K60 HDR passthrough and up to 1080p60 recording or capture. These are specifications for the Neo, not a general capture-card standard. Its listed operating systems are Windows 10 64-bit, macOS 12 and iPadOS 17 or later; the manual also specifies computer hardware requirements. Check the current Neo manual for the full requirements before purchase.

How to connect an external capture card
- Connect the console or other HDMI source to the card’s HDMI IN.
- If you want to play on a separate display through the card, connect its HDMI OUT to the TV or monitor. This passthrough link is separate from the computer’s capture feed.
- Connect the card to a supported USB port on the computer. For the Neo setup, Elgato recommends a direct USB 3.0-or-better connection and says not to use a USB hub.
- Open recording or streaming software, such as OBS Studio or Streamlabs, and select the card as the video source. Check the software’s audio settings too if the captured feed should include source audio.
These connection steps reflect Elgato’s 4K X quick-start guide and Neo manual; exact ports and requirements vary by card.
Troubleshooting a black or missing capture feed
- No signal in software: Confirm the source is connected to HDMI IN, the card is connected to the computer, and the software has the card selected as its video source. Check the card’s supported computer connection and system requirements.
- Black PS5 gameplay capture: Elgato’s 4K X guide says HDCP can cause a black PS5 capture feed and gives steps to turn it off for gameplay capture. Follow the guide’s device-specific path. This is not a way to capture protected video or remove content protections.
- Display works, but capture quality is lower than expected: Compare the card’s capture specifications with its passthrough specifications. The display path may support a higher resolution, frame rate or HDR mode than the captured feed.
- Connection drops or the card is not detected: For the documented Neo setup, connect directly to a USB 3.0-or-better port rather than a hub. For other models, follow that manufacturer’s port and system requirements.
Or let it run in the cloud
A capture card is for bringing an HDMI source into computer software; it is not required to keep a pre-recorded YouTube stream running. If your goal is a 24/7 YouTube channel made from uploaded videos, StreamNeo runs the loop in the cloud instead of relying on a computer and home connection staying on.
