A WWE Strap Match connects the two wrestlers with a strap, usually fastened at the wrist. In the familiar four-corner version, a wrestler wins by touching all four ring corners in succession. But WWE has also announced strap matches decided by pinfall or submission, so the specific bout’s stated rules matter.
How does a WWE Strap Match work?
The strap keeps the competitors physically connected. WWE’s 2013 guide describes the familiar version as a match in which both wrestlers are tethered at the wrist and the first to touch all four corners in succession wins. Because neither wrestler can simply move away from the other, the connection also creates a tug-of-war: either competitor can pull an opponent back or use the strap to control the distance between them.
In Sheamus versus Mark Henry at Extreme Rules 2013, WWE reported that a leather strap bound the wrestlers at the wrist. Lights on the ring corners indicated which wrestler had touched each one, and Sheamus won by completing the four-corner sequence. Does every WWE Strap Match use the four-corner rule?
No. WWE has used different win conditions, so “Strap Match” alone does not establish how a particular bout ends. The announced rules can call for the four-corner sequence, pinfall, submission, or a combination of finishes.

- Pinfall: WWE’s historical overview cites Randy Orton versus Dusty Rhodes at The Great American Bash in July 2007 as a strap or chain match decided by pinfall. WWE’s historical overview covers the example.
- Pinfall or submission: In its preview of Bray Wyatt versus Daniel Bryan at the 2020 Royal Rumble, WWE announced that the Universal Title Strap Match would be decided by pinfall or submission. This describes the rules announced for that bout, not every strap match. WWE’s match preview gives the announced finish.
What equipment can a Strap Match use?
WWE coverage describes leather straps, bull ropes, and chains in different bouts. The exact equipment is another match-specific detail, not a single universal definition. For example, WWE’s report on Drew McIntyre versus Karrion Kross at Extreme Rules 2022 described 12 feet of leather between the competitors; it does not establish that all strap matches use that length or the same rules. WWE’s 2022 match report recounts the bout.
WWE’s retrospective description of the Indian Strap Match gives a distinct example: the wrestlers were tied to opposite ends of a leather strap, and victory came by incapacitating an opponent and dragging him to all four corners. That is WWE’s description of this particular specialty match, rather than a rule that applies to every bout called a Strap Match. WWE’s specialty-match retrospective describes the format.

What should you check before watching one?
Look for the specific match announcement or event preview. Confirm the win condition first—four corners, pinfall, submission, or a combination—then note how the competitors are connected and whether the bout has a special scoring device or added stipulation. Those details explain what the wrestlers need to do to win; the shared strap is the defining setup, not a guarantee of one fixed finish.
