In “Motherland,” June faces a choice that puts the possibility of seeing Hannah again against the danger of returning to Gilead. Commander Lawrence offers New Bethlehem as a more open settlement and appeals to June’s hope of reuniting with her daughter, but he will not promise to protect Hannah from Gilead’s marriage rules. The episode ends with a planned raid and no answer about its outcome.
What happens in “Motherland”?
June is living in Toronto with Luke, Moira, Rita, and Nicole as protests against Gilead spill into the community. Commander Lawrence pitches New Bethlehem to Gilead’s commanders as a more open settlement that could draw refugees back and improve the regime’s standing abroad. His offer to June is more personal: she might be able to reunite with Hannah there.
Luke distrusts Lawrence and opposes sending June or Nicole back to Gilead. Tuello also urges caution, but gives June little usable detail about American plans. June’s decision becomes harder when Lawrence refuses to promise that Hannah will be spared marriage under Gilead’s rules. June’s priority is protecting her daughter, not simply accepting a political promise that might bring them together.
Why does June hesitate over New Bethlehem?
Lawrence offers a future, not immediate safety
Lawrence presents New Bethlehem as a reform project, but his refusal to protect Hannah exposes the limits of that promise. He is asking June to believe that a changed settlement could be worth returning for, while the danger to Hannah remains immediate and unresolved.

June and Luke want different forms of protection
Luke’s resistance comes from fear for June and Nicole, and from his distrust of Lawrence. June’s focus is Hannah. Their conflict is not simply about whether Lawrence is trustworthy; it is also about the different risks each is willing to accept for family.
What happens to Serena and Noah?
Serena is returned to the Wheelers under an arrangement that lets her nurse Noah while the Wheelers retain control over his care. She asks June for help. June advises her to stay close to her child, while privately considering how to regain agency herself. Serena’s dependence on the Wheelers echoes the coercive family arrangements she once helped impose on other women. June’s advice shows compassion, but it does not make them friends or erase what Serena has done.

How does the episode end?
At home, June watches a video of Hannah at Wives School, deepening her fear that her daughter’s life is moving on without her. The episode’s final turn comes when Tuello tells June that Hannah has been found and that a raid is planned. The account of the episode does not establish whether the raid succeeds, so June’s chance to reach Hannah remains unresolved.

- Personal reunion versus political risk: New Bethlehem offers June a possible path to Hannah, but only through a settlement controlled by Gilead.
- Promised reform versus immediate protection: Lawrence’s vision of gradual change cannot guarantee Hannah’s safety now.
- Autonomy versus protection: Luke wants to keep June and Nicole out of danger; June is prepared to consider risk because Hannah is still in Gilead.
“Motherland” was written by Yahlin Chang and directed by Natalia Leite, according to Lisa Macklem’s episode review, published November 2, 2022. The review reports that Lawrence refers to a “400” point plan; that is an episode detail, not a real-world statistic. Macklem also reproduces Lawrence’s line to Serena, “Do you have an IRONY deficiency?” and a partial speech to June about democracy and liberty. These are reviewer-reproduced quotations, not verified against an official transcript. Read the episode review.
