Crashes, No Sound, or Screen Glitches?
Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minutePC Slower Than It Used to Be?

You can create one with a physical green screen and OBS’s Chroma Key filter, or use software background removal if your app and device support it. You do not always need a green screen.
How a virtual background works
The software separates you—the foreground—from the background, then replaces, blurs, or hides the background. There are two common ways to do this: chroma keying removes a physical screen of a specific color, while software segmentation detects a person against an ordinary room. The finished camera view can be part of a live-stream scene or sent to another app as a virtual webcam.
Do you need a green screen?
| Approach | What you need | Trade-offs |
|---|---|---|
| Physical screen and chroma key | A solid-colored screen, curtain, or wall; even lighting; and an app with a chroma-key filter. | Zoom says its green-screen method can improve sharpness and definition around the subject and use fewer system resources than its no-screen method. You need room for the screen and reasonably controlled lighting. |
| Software background removal | A compatible app and device; no physical screen is required. | Edges may be less defined because the software must distinguish the subject from a real background. Zoom says this method has higher system requirements. |
Neither method is universally best: edge quality, available space, lighting, computer resources, and software and hardware support all matter. Zoom recommends uniform lighting, a bright screen color that contrasts with your clothing and background, and avoiding clothes that match the keyed color. For no-screen removal, illuminate yourself and some of the background so the subject is easier to distinguish. Zoom’s guidance also notes that a higher-quality camera can improve the result. Zoom’s virtual-background setup guidance covers these recommendations.
Set up a virtual background in OBS
With a physical green screen
- In OBS, add your webcam to the intended scene as a Video Capture Source.
- Right-click the camera source and open Filters. Add the Chroma Key filter and choose the screen color, usually green. Adjust the filter until the screen disappears without cutting into your outline.
- Add the replacement image, video, or scene layer behind the camera source. In OBS’s source list, lower that background layer beneath the camera.
- Check the scene in the preview. Look for green spill, missing hair or clothing, uneven patches, and visible screen edges; improve lighting or refine the filter as needed.
OBS’s Video Capture Source guide and Chroma Key filter guide explain the relevant source and filter controls. A dedicated backdrop is optional; a suitable solid-colored wall or curtain can also provide the keyed surface.

- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Without a physical screen
Use an application that supports background segmentation on your device. One documented OBS route is NVIDIA Broadcast: NVIDIA’s announcement for OBS 28.0 described native integration of its virtual-background and room-echo effects for GeForce RTX streamers, and its setup guide instructs users to add a Video Capture Source and select Camera (NVIDIA Broadcast). Compatibility and requirements depend on current software and hardware versions, so check NVIDIA’s current Broadcast setup guide before relying on that route. This specific OBS integration announcement concerned OBS 28.0 and RTX systems, not every computer.
Send an OBS scene to another app
- Build and preview your scene in OBS, including the camera and replacement background.
- In OBS’s Controls dock, start Virtual Camera. If needed, open its output options first: Program is the normal output; in Studio Mode, Preview sends the preview scene, while Scene or Source can lock output to a particular scene or source.
- In the receiving app’s camera settings, select OBS Virtual Camera.
- Confirm the correct scene and framing are visible in the receiving app before starting a meeting or stream.
OBS’s Virtual Camera guide documents the output choices and start control. Preview output in Studio Mode includes the preview scene, so edits made there can appear in the receiving app.

Use Zoom’s built-in virtual background
- On Zoom desktop, open Settings → Video & effects → Virtual backgrounds.
- Choose an included image, upload your own still or video, select Blur, or choose None. During a meeting, open the same controls from the arrow beside Video.
- Check your camera framing and the preview. If the option is unavailable, your device may not meet the requirements, or an account administrator may have disabled or restricted virtual backgrounds.
Zoom lists custom stills as 24-bit PNG or JPEG files up to 15 MB and recommends matching the image’s aspect ratio to the camera. For a 16:9 camera, it gives 1280×720 or 1920×1080 as examples. Documented video uploads are MP4 or MOV, from 480×360 through 1920×1080. Background video and effects without a green screen require more system resources and have higher requirements; see Zoom’s current support page for availability and device details.
Check the composed view before going live
- Check that the subject is separated cleanly and that hair, glasses, hands, and clothing remain intact.
- Look for shadows, screen wrinkles, color spill, and clothing that blends into the keyed color.
- Confirm the right OBS output mode or receiving-app camera is selected; the app may otherwise show a different scene or camera.
- Keep the intended scene in preview before going live. In OBS Studio Mode, distinguish Preview from Program so you do not unexpectedly send an in-progress edit.
Troubleshoot common problems
| What you see | Likely cause | What to try |
|---|---|---|
| Parts of your subject disappear or the edge looks jagged | The keyed color is too close to clothing or skin tones, or the screen is unevenly lit; with software removal, the subject may not stand out from the room. | Use a brighter, distinct screen color and even lighting; avoid matching clothing. For software removal, illuminate yourself and some of the background, and check the app’s device requirements. |
| The replacement background does not appear | The background layer may sit above the camera source, the key may not match the screen color, or the receiving app may be using another camera. | Place the background below the camera in OBS’s source list, check the Chroma Key color and filter, and select the intended virtual camera in the receiving app. |
| The receiving app shows the wrong OBS scene | Virtual Camera output may be set to Preview, Scene, or Source instead of the intended Program output. | Review Virtual Camera output options in OBS and choose the output that matches your intended scene. |
| Zoom does not offer virtual backgrounds, or the effect is slow | The computer may not meet the feature requirements, or an account administrator may have restricted the feature. Background video and no-screen removal also need more system resources. | Check Zoom’s support requirements and account settings, close resource-heavy applications, or try the green-screen method if you can set one up. |
| The still or video background will not upload | The file may exceed Zoom’s documented size or format limits, or its dimensions may be outside the supported range. | For stills, use a 24-bit PNG or JPEG no larger than 15 MB. For video, use MP4 or MOV within 480×360 to 1920×1080; match a still’s aspect ratio to your camera where possible. |
Keep a YouTube stream running without keeping your computer on
A virtual background changes the camera image in a scene; it is not itself a way to keep a camera-based broadcast running after your computer shuts down. If your goal is an always-on YouTube stream made from uploaded recordings rather than a live camera, StreamNeo runs uploaded videos or playlists from the cloud.
