For a solo creator who wants to record locally, Audacity is a strong free starting point: it records from a microphone or mixer and runs on Windows, macOS, and Linux. For remote interviews, compare services by guest count, separate tracks, recording limits, video needs, and editing features—not by the word “free” alone. Prices and free-plan limits below reflect official product pages checked on October 3, 2026, and can change.

Choose software for the way you record

Solo recording and editing

Audacity suits creators who can record at a computer and want to edit audio without a subscription. Its official FAQ says the desktop software is free for Windows, macOS, and Linux, and supports live recording through a microphone or mixer. A suitable input device is all you need to begin; buying a new microphone is optional.

For Apple users who prefer an editing tool in that ecosystem, Apple’s creator resources point beginners to GarageBand. Check the current software requirements and export options for the device you use.

Remote interviews

Recording guests remotely is a different job from editing a solo recording. Compare whether a service captures each speaker separately, records locally, supports your guests’ devices, and gives you enough session time. If you plan to publish video as well as audio, check resolution limits and watermarks too.

Zencastr Remote interviews where separate participant tracks matter Zencastr advertises browser or phone recording, separate tracks, local recording, up to six participants on its free plan, unlimited recording time, and audio up to 48 kHz on its feature page. Free-plan limits and recording claims are vendor statements; verify the current terms before relying on them.
Riverside Free Trying multitrack remote recording or video before paying Its pricing page listed up to 720p video, 44.1 kHz audio, and a watermark. One-off two-hour multitrack allowance, not a recurring monthly allowance.
Riverside Standard Regular remote multitrack sessions with a modest monthly allowance The pricing page listed five hours of multitrack recording per month. $15/month billed annually ($180/year) on the page checked October 3, 2026; the page also showed a higher monthly-billed rate.
Riverside Pro More monthly multitrack time and higher-tier features The pricing page listed 15 hours of multitrack recording per month. $24/month billed annually ($288/year) on the page checked October 3, 2026; the page also showed a higher monthly-billed rate.

Riverside’s pricing page described annual plans as discounted by up to 21%; that is a vendor-listed offer, not a guarantee that every user or plan receives the same effective rate. Check the live page for current prices, billing terms, and packaging.

What to check before choosing a remote recorder

  • Guest count: Confirm the plan supports the number of people you expect in a session. Zencastr advertises up to six participants on its free plan; verify availability when you sign up.
  • Separate tracks: Separate participant files give you more control when editing crosstalk, interruptions, or uneven levels. Confirm whether the plan includes them and whether the files are available for download.
  • Recording limits: Work out the hours you will record in a typical month. A one-time allowance can cover a trial or occasional session but is not equivalent to a recurring monthly allowance.
  • Local recording and connection behavior: Check how the service records each guest and what happens if a guest’s internet connection falters. Product descriptions are vendor claims, not comparative test results.
  • Video deliverables: If you need video, compare resolution, watermarks, and any video-specific limits alongside audio features.
  • Post-production: See whether the plan includes editing tools you will actually use, and whether you can export the individual tracks in a format your editor accepts.

How to estimate whether a free plan is enough

  1. Estimate your recording hours for a normal month, including retakes and pre-interview checks.
  2. Decide whether you need multitrack recordings, video, or both; those requirements can make an otherwise generous free tier unsuitable.
  3. Separate one-off limits from recurring allowances. Riverside’s listed Free allowance was two hours of multitrack recording once; its listed Standard and Pro allowances were five and 15 hours per month, respectively, when the pricing page was checked October 3, 2026.
  4. Compare the annual-billed monthly figure with the total annual commitment. Riverside listed Standard at $15/month billed annually ($180/year) and Pro at $24/month billed annually ($288/year) on that date; check the current monthly-billed price if you do not want an annual commitment.
  5. Confirm whether your chosen workflow needs an editor, file storage, or a separate podcast host in addition to the recording tool.

Set export settings for the place you publish

Recording software and podcast hosting solve different problems. Apple explains that hosting providers manage the RSS feed and may offer services such as show submission, chapters, transcripts, dynamic ads, subscription support, or video publishing. Recording software alone does not necessarily host or distribute a show. See Apple’s podcast requirements and your host’s current documentation before exporting.

For RSS podcasts, Apple accepts MP3 or AAC and provides recommended settings for mono and stereo, including sample-rate and channel guidance. Its subscriber-audio requirements are separate. Use the settings specified by your hosting and distribution workflow; lower bit rates may introduce audible artifacts. Do not assume one export preset is right for every platform or subscription product.

Common mistakes that raise costs or reduce quality

  • Choosing on “unlimited” alone: Check whether the feature you need—especially separate tracks, video, or export—is included in the plan you will actually use.
  • Confusing a trial allowance with a monthly quota: Riverside’s listed free multitrack hours were a one-off allowance, while paid-tier hours recurred monthly.
  • Paying annually without checking the commitment: A monthly equivalent on an annual plan is not the same as month-to-month billing. Compare total cost and cancellation terms on the live pricing page.
  • Ignoring the publishing destination: Verify accepted codec, channel count, and sample rate with your host or distributor before settling on an export workflow.
  • Buying equipment before checking your input: Audacity can record through a microphone or mixer, so first confirm whether your existing device produces a usable recording.
