A live streaming encoder converts live audio and video into a compressed digital stream and sends it to a platform such as YouTube. It can be software on your computer, an encoding feature built into a GPU, or a dedicated hardware device. Most creators do not need to buy a separate encoder: streaming software on a capable computer may already do the job.

What a live streaming encoder does

A camera, microphone, or computer produces video and audio that must be prepared in formats and at data rates a streaming platform can accept. The encoder compresses those signals using a codec, then sends the resulting stream to the platform’s ingest endpoint over a supported protocol.

These are related but different parts of the workflow:

  • Capture: a camera, microphone, or computer creates the source audio and video.
  • Composition: a switcher or application such as OBS can select sources and arrange them into scenes.
  • Encoding: software or hardware compresses the selected audio and video into a stream.
  • Ingest and delivery: the platform receives the stream, processes it, and distributes it for viewers. YouTube says it transcodes live streams into multiple output formats for viewers on different devices and networks.

One application or device can handle several of these jobs. A product called an “encoder” may also include switching or other production functions, so check what the specific model actually does.

Encoder, codec, and protocol: the difference

An encoder is the software or hardware doing the encoding and sending. A codec is the method used to compress and encode the audio or video, such as H.264, H.265/HEVC, or AV1. A protocol is how the encoded stream is carried to the platform, such as RTMPS. These terms are not interchangeable: the platform and encoder must support a compatible combination.

Software, GPU, or dedicated hardware?

Software encoding on a computer

Streaming software can encode using your computer’s processor. OBS includes x264, a software encoder. If your computer can handle your chosen resolution, frame rate, scenes, and other applications at the same time, software may be all you need.

Hardware encoding in a GPU

A GPU may have a specialized video-encoding component that takes encoding work off the CPU. OBS says modern hardware encoders can provide very good quality with limited performance impact; it also cautions that earlier hardware generations can deliver lower quality at the same bitrate than software encoding at its stated comparison preset. That is not a universal ranking: results depend on the hardware generation, implementation, settings, resolution, frame rate, and scene complexity.

Hardware encoding can be useful if you want to preserve CPU capacity—for example, while gaming or running a demanding production—but confirm that the encoder supports the codec and settings your platform accepts. OBS also warns that meeting system requirements alone does not guarantee a computer can stream or record a particular workload.

Dedicated encoder device

A standalone encoder is a separate option for a production workflow that benefits from a dedicated device. It is not a requirement for ordinary streaming, and the available documentation does not establish that a dedicated unit universally outperforms a computer. If you are considering one, verify its supported sources, codecs, protocols, resolution and frame rate against your actual setup. Magewell’s Ultra Encode manual, for example, documents a workflow for streaming to YouTube; that example is not a general performance comparison.

Choose settings for YouTube

Settings depend on the platform. For YouTube’s RTMP/RTMPS guidance, the supported video codecs listed are H.264, H.265/HEVC, and AV1, with frame rates up to 60 fps. YouTube recommends constant bitrate (CBR) and a two-second keyframe interval; it says the interval should not exceed four seconds. Consult YouTube’s current encoder settings guidance before a broadcast, since platform requirements and recommendations can change.

YouTube H.264 bitrate examples

Output YouTube H.264 bitrate guidance
1080p at 60 fps 6 Mbps minimum; 17 Mbps recommended
4K/2160p at 60 fps 14 Mbps minimum; 50 Mbps recommended

These are YouTube’s published figures, not universal settings for every service or network. YouTube’s corresponding recommended figures for AV1 or H.265/HEVC are 12 Mbps at 1080p60 and 35 Mbps at 4K60. The platform also advises testing upload speed and choosing a quality your connection can sustain reliably; a bitrate that exceeds available upload capacity can make a stream unstable.

Choose an ingest protocol that fits

YouTube supports RTMP, RTMPS, HLS, and DASH ingest, but the protocols differ in codec support and latency. RTMP supports H.264 and is unencrypted; RTMPS adds encryption and is suitable for ordinary and low-latency streaming. HLS supports H.264 and H.265/HEVC, while DASH supports H.264 and VP9. Google describes HLS and DASH as options for some high-resolution workflows, while noting that their segment-based delivery typically introduces more latency than RTMP. There is no single best protocol for every setup: match the platform’s support, the codec, your encoder, and your latency needs.

For YouTube RTMPS, the connection carries RTMP through SSL/TLS. Use the valid RTMPS endpoint and path shown by YouTube, connect on port 443, and ensure the server hostname and SNI are handled correctly by the encoder. YouTube recommends RTMPS to encrypt data in transit to its servers. Treat the stream key as a credential: enter it only in the encoder’s designated field, do not publish it, and reset it if it is exposed. Do not share it with anyone who does not need access to your stream.

How to decide what you need

Compare options against the demands of your specific broadcast rather than assuming you need to buy a device:

  • Workflow: Can existing software on your computer do the job, or would GPU encoding or a dedicated device better suit your production?
  • Compatibility: Does the encoder support the platform’s codec, ingest protocol, operating system, drivers, and relevant settings?
  • Workload: Consider resolution, frame rate, scene complexity, and whether you will game or run other production software simultaneously.
  • Network: Can your upload connection sustain the selected bitrate reliably? Test it and leave room for normal network variation rather than treating a speed-test peak as a guarantee.
  • Operations: Consider your sources, portability needs, and whether a standalone appliance has a practical advantage in your setup. Confirm those details in the exact device documentation.

There is no universal minimum upload margin or hardware-versus-software performance result established here. Check the current requirements for the platform you plan to use and test your actual workload.

Test before you go live

  1. Confirm platform compatibility. Check the platform’s current codec, protocol, resolution, frame-rate, and bitrate guidance.
  2. Configure the encoder. Select a supported codec and ingest protocol, enter the stream key privately, and set bitrate, frame rate, and keyframe interval according to the platform guidance.
  3. Run a representative test. Include audio and motion similar to the real event. A static screen is not a useful test for a fast-moving broadcast.
  4. Check stream health and platform messages. Watch for dropped frames, connection instability, audio problems, or platform warnings, and adjust settings before the event.

On YouTube, 4K/2160p streams cannot use the “improve for low latency” option and run at normal latency. If low latency is important, account for that limitation when choosing resolution.
