Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →You can stream prerecorded videos from a folder to YouTube Live with a Raspberry Pi 5 by making an ordered FFmpeg concat list, sending it at real-time speed, and either copying compatible streams or transcoding them to YouTube’s ingest settings. The important limitation: Pi 5 has no dedicated hardware video encoder, so a transcode must be tested on your own files and setup before you rely on it for a broadcast.
What you need
- A Raspberry Pi 5 running an operating system with FFmpeg installed.
- The video files stored on a drive the Pi can read. Pi 5 provides a microSD slot and USB 3.0 ports; choose storage capacity based on your library. Raspberry Pi 5 specifications.
- A stable network connection. Gigabit Ethernet is available on Pi 5; the required upload capacity depends on the bitrate you choose.
- A YouTube channel with live streaming enabled, and the stream URL and key for the broadcast from YouTube Studio.
- FFmpeg with the protocol and encoders needed for your chosen output. Build options vary, so check the installed build before planning around a particular encoder.
First-time YouTube Live enablement may take up to 24 hours, according to YouTube’s live-stream setup help. Allow time to enable the feature and test it before an event.
Choose stream copy or transcoding
FFmpeg can send compatible audio and video without re-encoding, or decode and encode them into a consistent output format. These are different trade-offs, not interchangeable guarantees.
| Method | When it fits | Trade-off on Pi 5 |
|---|---|---|
| Stream copy / remux | Files already use compatible codecs, parameters, timestamps, and a container FFmpeg can send to the selected YouTube ingest endpoint. | Usually avoids the expensive video-encoding work, but mixed files can fail or behave poorly at transitions. Check boundaries and YouTube preview. |
| Transcode | Sources need a common codec, bitrate, frame rate, resolution, or audio format. | Offers output control but uses CPU. Raspberry Pi says Pi 5 has 4Kp60 HEVC decoding capability but encoding is software-based, not dedicated hardware encoding. No sustained output rate is guaranteed for a particular source or setup. |
Raspberry Pi Director of Software Engineering Gordon Hollingworth said, “For Pi 5 we feel the hardware encode is a mm² too far.” The practical distinction is that HEVC decode support does not mean hardware encode acceleration. Raspberry Pi’s Pi 5 announcement.

Build an ordered playlist for FFmpeg
The concat demuxer reads a text list in the order you specify. Make the order explicit: alphabetical sorting is only a naming convention, not an FFmpeg guarantee. For example, save this as playlist.ffconcat alongside the files:
ffconcat version 1.0
file 'episode-01.mp4'
file 'episode-02.mp4'
file 'episode-03.mp4'
The first line must be exactly ffconcat version 1.0. Put one file entry per item. Paths with spaces should be quoted; for example file 'my documentary.mp4'. FFmpeg’s concat documentation describes the list syntax and the demuxer’s safe-path behavior: by default, unsafe paths are rejected. FFmpeg concat demuxer documentation.

Relative paths in the example avoid needing to change the default safety behavior. If you use absolute paths or unusual path forms, consult the documentation before changing the safe-path setting: relaxing path checks has security implications. Check spelling, permissions, and ordering, then preview each transition. The concat demuxer works best when files have matching stream structures and compatible parameters; it does not make unrelated media seamless automatically.
Set up YouTube Live and choose output settings
- In YouTube Studio, create or select the live stream and choose its privacy and scheduling settings.
- Copy the current stream URL and stream key shown for that stream. Treat the key like a password; do not publish it in a script, repository, screenshot, or message.
- Choose an output codec, resolution, and frame rate based on the source files and the Pi’s capacity. YouTube’s current encoder guidance lists H.264, H.265/HEVC, and AV1 video; AAC or MP3 audio; constant bitrate (CBR); and up to 60 fps. It recommends a two-second keyframe interval, which must not exceed four seconds. Use YouTube’s bitrate table for the selected codec, resolution, and frame rate rather than assuming one bitrate fits all.
- For SDR, YouTube’s guidance lists Rec. 709 and 8-bit. Its stereo audio guidance specifies 44.1 kHz and 128 kbps. Confirm the current recommendations in YouTube’s encoder settings help.
- Prefer RTMPS when your FFmpeg build supports it. YouTube’s developer reference describes RTMPS as using a valid ingestion endpoint and path over SSL on port 443; Studio/API values can provide primary and backup ingest URLs and a stream name. Some interfaces separate URL and key, while others need them combined. Use the values issued for your stream, not a copied example URL. YouTube RTMPS ingestion reference.
Do not choose a bitrate from a generic example without fixing the target mode first. The correct row depends on codec, resolution, and frame rate; upload bandwidth must sustain the resulting stream with headroom.

Send the folder with FFmpeg
Run FFmpeg on the Pi from the directory containing the list and media, or use paths appropriate to your setup. The command below is a template, not a universal command for every FFmpeg build or folder. Replace the output options with the current YouTube-compatible settings you selected, and replace the placeholder key without exposing the real key publicly.
ffmpeg -re -f concat -safe 1 -i playlist.ffconcat
-c:v copy -c:a copy
-f flv "rtmps://YOUR_INGEST_URL/YOUR_STREAM_KEY"
-re paces input at real-time speed instead of sending the files as fast as the Pi can read them. -f concat selects the concat demuxer. -safe 1 retains safe-path checking for the relative paths in the example. The copy options are appropriate only when the input streams and output muxing are compatible. The RTMPS address shown is deliberately schematic: use the exact current endpoint and stream key from YouTube, in the format your FFmpeg build expects.

If copy mode produces incompatible output, switch to encoding. For example, the following shows the shape of an H.264/AAC transcode command; set BITRATE, resolution, frame rate, and keyframe interval to a specific current YouTube table row and validate that the Pi can sustain it. Confirm the installed FFmpeg build includes libx264 and RTMPS support before using it.
ffmpeg -re -f concat -safe 1 -i playlist.ffconcat
-c:v libx264 -b:v BITRATE -maxrate BITRATE -bufsize BUFFER
-r FRAME_RATE -g KEYFRAME_FRAMES -pix_fmt yuv420p
-c:a aac -b:a 128k -ar 44100 -ac 2
-f flv "rtmps://YOUR_INGEST_URL/YOUR_STREAM_KEY"
For a two-second keyframe interval, set the GOP length (-g) to approximately twice the output frame rate, in frames; for example, a 30 fps output uses a 60-frame GOP. Keep the actual interval at or below YouTube’s four-second maximum. Fill in numeric bitrate and buffer values according to your target mode; the template intentionally does not prescribe one universal bitrate.

- 【 Faster CPU, Better GPU 】 Pi 5 features a Broadcom BCM2712 64-bit quad-core Arm Cortex-A76 processor running at 2.4GHz, it delivers a 2–3× increase in CPU performance relative to RaspberryPi 4. Pi 5 Offers lightning-fast CPU speed, a PCI Express interface, a Real Time Clock (RTC) and a power button and runs significantly cooler than Pi 4.
Stream copy is the lower-compute choice when it works. If transcoding is necessary, start with a modest resolution and frame rate, watch CPU load and dropped frames, and raise the target only after a sustained test. Pi 5’s ability to decode HEVC does not establish that it can encode any chosen format at a particular sustained rate.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Test before the broadcast
- Start with a private or unlisted test stream and representative files, including the most demanding moving footage and audio in the folder.
- Check YouTube Studio’s preview for picture, sound, aspect ratio, and transitions. Confirm the stream health indicator rather than treating an FFmpeg connection message as proof of a healthy broadcast.
- Let the test run long enough to reveal sustained CPU, network, or thermal problems. Watch FFmpeg output for errors and dropped frames.
- Test the end of the list. The concat list does not guarantee repeat playback by itself. For a continuing loop, configure or regenerate the input deliberately for your installed FFmpeg version and verify that playback returns to the first file cleanly.
- For a scheduled broadcast, start the encoder, wait for YouTube’s preview, and press Go live when Studio’s workflow requires it. YouTube recommends testing before a live event. Encoder setup and testing guidance.
Copyright, archives, and channel rules
Only stream videos and music you have the right to broadcast. YouTube’s copyright systems and live policies still apply to prerecorded material; having a local file does not establish permission. Review YouTube’s policies and the copyright status of every item before going live. Reused or repetitive material may also affect channel monetization eligibility; a stream being technically valid does not establish that it qualifies for monetization.
YouTube’s encoder help says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. Do not rely on automatic archiving for a planned stream lasting 12 hours or longer; arrange and verify any recording or archive you need separately. YouTube live-stream help.
Troubleshooting common problems
- FFmpeg rejects the list or cannot open a file: check that the first line is exact, each path exists relative to the list, spelling and capitalization match, and the Pi has read permission. Quote paths containing spaces. Keep safe-path checking enabled unless you understand the implications of changing it.
- Playback fails or glitches at a file boundary: inspect whether adjacent files have compatible codecs, stream layouts, parameters, and timestamps. Try a consistent transcode when copy mode cannot reconcile them, then test the transition in YouTube preview.
- YouTube does not receive the stream: verify that live streaming is enabled, the URL and key are current and paired, and the endpoint format matches FFmpeg’s RTMPS support. Regenerate a compromised key in Studio rather than continuing to use it.
- Preview appears but frames drop or audio breaks up: check CPU load, FFmpeg output, and network stability over a sustained test. Reduce resolution or frame rate, choose a lower valid bitrate row, or use copy mode if the media is compatible.
- Audio is absent or wrong: inspect that each file has an audio stream and compatible parameters. If transcoding, set the audio codec and sample rate explicitly and verify the preview before the event.
- The playlist stops after the last file: end-of-list looping is not automatic. Configure deliberate repeat behavior supported by your installed FFmpeg build and test it; do not assume a concat list loops by itself.
- YouTube shows no live preview: allow for first-time enablement, check Studio’s stream health and setup prompts, and confirm whether the scheduled event needs the operator to click Go live.
Or let it run in the cloud
If you want a YouTube channel to keep prerecorded videos live without leaving the Pi or another computer running, StreamNeo is a cloud alternative: upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. It loops uploaded videos from the cloud, not a camera feed, so nothing has to stay on at home. Every slot streams the uploaded quality up to 4K 60fps at one flat price per slot, with no re-encode or quality tiers; if YouTube drops the stream, StreamNeo automatically recovers. The first day is free with no card, once per account. Monthly service is $9.99 per month. StreamNeo is for YouTube only. Start your free StreamNeo day.
